You know you don't need Z87 for anything, right? Though if you're including rebate pricing and not scared off by the small sample size of bad user reviews, it's fine. If you want to be more paranoid and get something with more features, VRM heatsinks, four RAM slots, etc., it's not going to be a whole lot less, e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128607 Technically you can save $10 on the processor by getting the exact Xeon equivalent: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116909 I'm very much not convinced on needing an i7 and 16 GB of RAM, especially over getting an SSD, but I guess it depends on the compilers, libraries, types of projects in general, etc. Well, even adding a Crucial M500 240GB to that as it is (you may need an extra SATA cable too) doesn't really kill the budget, so maybe do that: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148694 edit: you know, with a stock CPU cooler, no discrete graphics, and minimal number of drives, that is going to be one really really empty box you have there for the build—not that it's an actual problem per se. Thanks. To be honest I'm not too convinced he'll need the i7 and 16gb ram either, but he specifically requested it so I'm just going with it. I picked that case because it looks pretty cool and was relatively cheap. Is there a smaller one that you recommend?

It does seem like a lot of the complaints I've seen on the Asus forum regarding the card seem specific to miners - running the card at full capacity for hours on end. I'd set up a miner process to stress the card, but I can't be bothered with it and I'm not going to get any returns out of it. I'm just paranoid when things look like they're running too well ![]()

I can tell you Eve, KSP, Heart of the Swarm, CS:GO... basically any game I've played hasn't made the 280x do more than shrug with all settings maxed. Everything you listed there is largely light on GPU and somewhat CPU bound, lol - this is kinda why i hate people saying that "gaming" is all about the GPU. As for updated x264 numbers, best i've seen, corrected to 4.5ghz for this bench linearly (because that's pretty much how scaling goes and not all results are on 4.5ghz) ~7.28fps for 3930k ~6.1fps for 4770k ~5.18fps for 4670k ~5.11fps for 8350 That puts 8350 at 100% performance 4670k at 101.4% performance 4770k at 119.4% performance 3930k at 142.5% performance (at the same clock speed)

I'm mostly wondering if the GA-Z87-D3HP will support my current video card, MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk, or would I have to upgrade my video card, as well? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What is your current build? CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHz GPU: MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk GeForce GTX 560 RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) MB: GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 SUP: Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 700W What is your monitor's native resolution? 1680x1050, single monitor. Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade? Achieve higher settings while gaming, and have smoother experience while playing. Potential streaming with friends. What is your budget? ~$400 What country will you be buying your parts in? USA If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify. Newegg for retailer preference. I'm looking to switch to Intel for CPU, so Intel preference. EDIT: Just found out there is a Micro Center in my area, so that would also be a retailer preference.

New CPU would probably mean i5-4670 for $220, a motherboard for $70, memory you could stay with yours, I guess, 1600MHz memory won't make enough of a difference to justify paying $70 or so for it. Here's benchmarks Athlon II X4 645 vs. i5-4670k (it has same speed as 4670 at stock): http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/188?vs=837 You could also buy an i3-4340 for $160, won't be much different for what you want, though the extra cores of the i5 might be better for the future.

Dota 2 runs fine, I've only had a single significant FPS drop where it was practically unplayable during a team fight. I mostly have problems with SC2, so you've pretty much hit the nail on the head with that. I just found out there's a Micro Center in my area, so that'll definitely ease the burden with my budget. Thank you very much for the help! I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't screw up and get parts that wouldn't be compatible with each other. I appreciate the help very much, and look forward to upgrading ![]()

Yeah, the motherboards I'm looking at are the same price, but the CPUs are significantly less from what I'm looking at. Thanks for the heads up!

They heavily discount certain CPUs to get you in the store (in-store pickup only, not shippable). I usually grab my miscellaneous items when I'm there (compressed air, power strips, cables). You'll need to verify your email address at the checkout counter for online purchases.

Well, to be fair, I didn't include Battlefield 4 CPU bound quite a lot in 64 player unless you're one of those people who's fine with 60fps "most of the time" and wants to raise graphics/resolution/AA until their graphics cards can't keep up. Mantle lets you get to like twice as high FPS numbers though, so if you can run that it shouldn't be a problem. If you can't and you want to strobe 120hz, there's not a CPU on the planet that will get you close :D

Finally 55c@1.3v on i5 instead of 70 without using a hammer? (high end air or equivalents) Finally some reason for any interest at all in these things
