Looking to upgrade from a laptop to a PC, been doing some browsing on newegg, not necessarily looking for a top of the line, best PC in the world or anything, just something that is mid-high performance level and this is what I came up with. Also, I play LoL SC2, AND MMO's. Just looking to see if I should switch anything up or make sure everything is compatible.

Sorry I'm not sure what your budget is but give these models a look:
Lenovo Y510p MSi GE60 Asus N550JV
These all have i7 4700HQ/MQ and a decent GPU like GT 750M or GTX 765M.
All around $1000 USD.

On January 19 2014 05:34 Cyro wrote:Then they're not made for gaming. 720m and 710m are hilariously bad, integrated graphics is extremely extremely suboptimal on a tdp limited laptop CPU (even one that's not low power) and the 740m.. is a mess There's two different chips that are called 740m, there's also ddr3 and gddr5 versions - it's a big mess and i don't even have any idea how to reccomend anything with it or for performance specifics etc; so for a gaming system i'd definately say hit two goals: Non low power CPU (no U in the name) and a 750m, if you're buying a 700-series GPU. That would probably make the system more bulky though, at least maybe a basic 15" shell - not really sure there. If somebody told me to pick between a 740m (without very very detailed specs) and integrated graphics on an i5-3xxxU cpu though, i would laugh i3/i5/i7 4xxx instead of 3xxx has significantly improved idle power; if you want to do stuff on desktop, word documents, play videos, skype, whatever, it'll help battery life a lot. On my desktop i find something ridiculous like 80% of the time is spent at very low idle power states for Haswell cpu, but it's much more important on laptop where battery life is limited HP or brands etc; i don't know so much about them. Most of my focus is on the higher end half of desktop systems, as well as random picked up info along the way I see thanks.

Look at the builds in OP if you didn't already
z87 and CPU with "k" on the end are for overclocking CPU, is that what you want? If so, you need an aftermarket cpu cooler. For OC, my go-to z87 board is the z87x-d3h; aside from that, you'd probably want an SSD in there too as boot drive and for games etc*, and to shave a bit of money from the RAM (8gb of 1600c9 shouldn't cost $85)
* http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E3W15P0/?tag=pcpapi-20 / http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147247 - (both $89 now)
Newegg pricing puts high end RAM at basically identical price to cheapest stuff.. ~ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231666 (if you're getting z87 board, as only z87 can run >1600mhz RAM and cpu oc)

Careful, you want Z87 not Z77 if you're getting a Haswell processor. The socket is LGA 1150, make sure they're compatible. If you're going to overclock, see Cyro's post, if not, you can get decent motherboards in B85 or H81 chipsets.

I see the logic in the power supply, so I'll go down to 450w since I'm only going to be using a single GPU setup. And I'll take a look at the other cases for sure. That socket is on a Z87 board, or if you don't want to touch overclocking then the H87/H81/B85 boards.
EDIT: I misread and did not see you looking at the 3570k CPU. That's Z77, so that's correct, but you might want to look at the pricing for i5-4670k and Z87, or i5-4670 and a B85 board or something.

Right, well the Fractal R4 looks pretty sweet so I'm considering that one. I'm thinking I should scrounge more parts from other retailers since this total price is pretty steep for what I wanted (higher mid range over a top of the line set up) or I'm just a cheap-ass. (http://i.imgur.com/fcDaI1G.jpg) <--cart.
If i was going to not consider overclocking, how much estimated performance drop/price drop would I be looking at if i went for the 4670 haswell and no after market cooler, etc?
|
Ew, $40 for a Hyper 212 variant. And paying $8 extra on extra aftermarket TIM as opposed to the one it ships with. Wait, ow, $110 for Define R4, $240 on i5-4670k, $85 on that RAM (!), uh... wait... ick.
Performance drop depends on game or other application. Frequently it would be negligible or essentially zero. Not so for SC2 and some other games, and maybe less so in the far future after a GPU upgrade if you're keeping the old CPU. You could save over $100 over the above by not overclocking.

Interesting. So going for 4670 and not overclocking, would the cooler it comes with be fine? Apparently it also has pre-applied thermal paste as well, but may not compare to the aforementioned arctic MX4?

Not sure about the prices in Turkey but...here's the link with specs + US price. http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/?sb=:000001CA:00003BAC:I feel like the lack of information I'm providing you is a personal insult xD. I spent like a whole year looking at gaming notebooks because I wanted to buy one but I had a budget of $2000 so I never looked too seriously at anything under $1000... WTF It's too expensive here, $1005 :O thanks for your help :3
From the list of laptops that you provided above, I would say that the SONY SVF1521JSTB would be the best choice.

Yes the stock cooler is fine if you're not overclocking. And yes it comes with pre-applied thermal paste so if you ever want to take it off and clean it, you will want to buy thermal paste separately.
