edit: current-gen available i7-3930k is $450, yeah. That's after some heavy price drops. The price is whatever Intel wants to set and people will buy if they need the e-peen or need to work with that many cores at that performance level.
The problem is more mobo IMO, you can pick up a 4670k for £170, beast mobo like the d3h for £105, z87 motherboards are awesome, but x79, what is there? Seems a lot of the lower tier boards have issues, at least earlier on with bios revisions it seemed like asus higher end boards were consistently clocking like 300mhz higher with ivy-e, but i'm not very informed on x79. Is there actually anything decent, like that will give you basically max overclock you can achieve short of custom water, for a good price? If so; why isn't everybody using it, opting to pay >£250 for the somewhat well known rampage iv boards?
In honor of SSD sales today:

350MB/s sequential read, ~45k IOPS - over £400 for 250gb.
Four years later, we have the 840 evo 250gb, with >~550MB/s sequential read, rated 98k IOPS, at £115.64 for 250gb.
Very nice :D I'll have to retire my c300 128gb at some point.

Thanks, Could you suggest a CPU cooler to replace the stock one that comes with i5 3550?
|
Just get a Hyper 212 or Xigmatek Gaia for $20-$30. If you want something better to overclock in your next config than look at a Noctua NH-U12S or Thermalright for ~$50.

Thanks, Do I have to worry about USB 2.0 / 3.0 compatibility issue? Motherboard has USB 3.0, but I need the case to support USB3.0 also to use it?
|
If your case doesn't have front USB3 than you simply won't have front panel USB3. You'd still have the USB3 at the back.
|
The motherboard has USB 3.0 on the back with the other ports. You can use those fine.
It also supports USB 3.0 through a header to a case or similar for two more ports. But the case is a budget model from a while back that doesn't support it.
If for whatever reason you are allergic to USB 3.0 hubs and need more than two ports or simultaneously want to hit more than two USB 3.0 ports hard with large transfers, there's stuff like this available that can connect back to the motherboard instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186176
I'm pretty sure this is not an issue and you're just getting scared off by something stupid. What you'd do with those parts is connect the USB 2.0 ports on the case to a USB 2.0 header on the motherboard and not have those extra USB 3.0 options available. Probably not an issue for you...?

Thanks! It's my first built, and I get paranoid when the website at partpicker tell me my system is incompatible.

Processor: $230 Intel Core i5 4670k Motherboard: $110 MSI Z87-G41 RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB 2133MHz DDR3 Video Card: $320 ASUS Radeon R9 280 2GB Primary Storage: 1TB Western digital Blue 6gbs SATA 64MB cache Power Supply: $150 Case: $60 Corsair Caribide 200R Black Steel/Plastic ATX
Total: 990
Looking for a suggestion for a PSU, also anything that I may have missed in terms of bottlenecks/incompatibilities.... I'm pretty sure I checked everything but this is my first build so who knows
Other Comments: My goal is to run BF4 on high at 1920. I'm planning to OC/add an SSD at a later date, hence the k processor/mobo with no extra heatsink.

G41 is a really low-end Z87 board which you don't want for overclocking and is also a very bad choice right now when a Gigabyte Z87X-D3H is significantly better at the same price ($110): http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=84040&promoid=1029
Budgeting $150 for power supply is way overkill when you have a low-end Z87 and even with a good Z87 board like the Z87X-D3H, it's still pretty overkill.
$60 for Carbide 200R is overpriced. For $20 more, you can get a Fractal Design Define R4 that's significantly better.
For power supply, Capstone 550M is on sale today for $75: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182262

edit: nm, pretty much repeated ^

whoops, i actually found that gigabyte and was planning on getting it but i did all my searching on newegg, so that one came up.
thanks for the heads up on the mobo and psu!
what should i be looking for in a case? i was concerned about having enough space to assemble since i didn't want to damage any parts. any suggestions cheaper than a define R4?

It's on back order so I'm not sure exactly how long/if you're willing to wait for them to restock. It comes with BF4 too.

I want to upgrade the processor of my computer, how do I choose the proper one? Currently I have this one: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+

You choose almost anything and it's way better than what you have.
Okay, to be serious, anything worthwhile you get will require a new motherboard and new RAM (DDR3 RAM).
As for what's appropriate, that depends on your needs and total budget for upgrading. In other words, you're replacing a significant amount of the computer, and it'll cost a couple or few (or several) hundred dollars. So how much can you spend, and what are you using the computer for? For that matter, what are the other components?
|
I posted previously, I just want my computer not to die during 4v4s, I was told that the processor was the most important thing for that. I want to buy a new computer in a few months, for now I want to know how much would it be for just upgrading the processor.
This is my computer
And I have a radeon hd 5670

R9 270x is essentially a rebranded 7870 whereas the r9 270 is too but with lower clocks.
Don't remember NCIX having any good RAM deals. All the $60 RAM deals are on Newegg.
If you're willing to do the mail in rebate than a Corsair CX is okay but not factoring in rebates, it's not a good choice.
