The high speed helps with the graphics as it has to feed both the CPU and integrated GPU in that build. EDIT: Also... it's not expensive! Did you see the RAM prices at the moment? Those $70 are actually cheap today.

I am interested in getting the SilverStone FT04S-W. Do SilverStone products go on sale often/during holiday season? Or do their prices remain stagnant in general? Any protips regarding purchasing timing would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, holistic

I took some numbers earlier btw for Haswell: 4.0ghz 1.1vcore, 1.65vrin, super conservative settings because i don't have a 4ghz profile avx2 linpack - linx 0.6.5 - - - max temps 76/79/79/77c - 113w cpu package power avx1 linpack - old version from IBT - - - max temps 67/70/70/67c - 95w cpu package power linpack without avx - occt 4.4 version - - - max temps 59/60/60/56c - 76w cpu package power I can compare the temperatures and reported CPU package power stat to other loads, but i'm pretty sure they're pretty tightly knit together and it takes a LOT more voltage to get it anywhere near 115w with other loads edit: x264 encoder using avx2 - - - max temps 56/57/57/55c, 72w cpu package power

Has anyone of you here had practical experience with my CPU (i5 2500k) especially? What cooler did you use, how much did you overclock, and how much performance did you gain in CPU-heavy games (probably RTS like Starcraft 2, Civ 5, Total War games)?

UPDATE: I repeated the experiment with a late game ZvZ replay with maxed armies: 3300 MHz: Avg: 41.925 - Min: 27 - Max: 58 3700 MHz: Avg: 46.625 - Min: 32 - Max: 63 4400 MHz: Avg: 56.025 - Min: 39 - Max: 77 The gains are pretty significant. In many cases, such as video encoding (x264, for offline - but OBS and xsplit use x264 for streaming, that's where the cpu load comes in) it's pretty much a linear gain - like, a 20% increase in frequency = a 20% increase in performance - and it's like that or similar for many CPU bound tasks, but Starcraft 2 seems to love CPU power especially in terms of minimum FPS, you can get great scaling with CPU OC. If somebody told me they put a 30% OC on CPU and got 50% higher minimum FPS, it wouldn't surprise me at all with that stats i have seen What motherboard do you have? The Macho is a great, quiet and usually good value cooler in europe (especially germany, good hardware prices) and with a 2500k and a macho, you can pretty much do whatever you want, motherboard permitting. It might even be considered overkill for somebody looking for a low to moderate overclock on a 2500k but that's never a terrible thing ![]()

Here it is: What is your budget? $2000 is what I would like to stay around but I can go more if needed. What is your monitor's native resolution? 1080p What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? SC2, WoW, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and GTA5 when it comes out. I was playing Black Ops 2 but I took a break since Multiplayer was pissing me off. What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Plan on streaming games on Twitch and putting my vods on youtube. I also plan on getting into video editing but I'll probably do that on my laptop. I already have a mic and webcam. Do you intend to overclock? Yes. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No. Do you need an operating system? Yes, Windows 8. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? I need 1 monitor for now and plan getting another one in november during black friday/cyber monday maybe. I do need a keyboard and a mouse. I do have another mouse I could use in the mean time if everything does fit into my budget. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. What country will you be buying your parts in? USA If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Newegg, Amazon, or NCIX. I mean, a current-gen decent 120 Hz (144 Hz) monitor is say $240 only. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313 That said, those are not too motion-intensive games. Some people might like one of those 2560x1440 27" monitors instead like the QX2710, which can usually run over 90 Hz anyway (but of course with worse motion performance than a TN, considering these are IPS/PLS).

I updated my original post with the questionnaire. Sorry about that. Was kinda of in a hurry. I didn't really pay attention to Hz when I was looking at that monitor. Thank you for bring that to my attention and I'll check out that monitor you listed.

I'm seeing stuff quoted such as 1.45v in the low 90's on a h90, and more exactly from ttl's video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHsm7fCvEoQ) he quotes ~21-22c room temp, h100 with two sp120(?) quiet fans, bit over 1.4vcore and 80c max's in avx linpack, which is just really really great for 6-core CPU. You could even go flat out and say it's like 10-20 degrees cooler than the quad cores without delid, which is awesome. Because ivy's just a die shrink, it doesn't seem special with sb-e existing previously (in terms of performance) and losing in singlethreaded to haswell quads, but Haswell-E coming with 6 and 8 cores in 2014 before skylake and (hilariously) potentially before even broadwell (if broadwell has 1150 z87 compatibility..) and hopefully solder on that too, it could be an awesome option. I'm kinda excited for next year with Steamroller and Haswell-E, and also to see if they solder broadwell on desktop, or what the die shrink and revision does to overclockability and temperatures. I took some numbers earlier btw for Haswell: Show nested quote + 4.0ghz 1.1vcore, 1.65vrin, super conservative settings because i don't have a 4ghz profile avx2 linpack - linx 0.6.5 - - - max temps 76/79/79/77c - 113w cpu package power avx1 linpack - old version from IBT - - - max temps 67/70/70/67c - 95w cpu package power linpack without avx - occt 4.4 version - - - max temps 59/60/60/56c - 76w cpu package power I can compare the temperatures and reported CPU package power stat to other loads, but i'm pretty sure they're pretty tightly knit together and it takes a LOT more voltage to get it anywhere near 115w with other loads edit: x264 encoder using avx2 - - - max temps 56/57/57/55c, 72w cpu package power Unless MC starts running s2011 mobos on the $40-60 off promos, I can't see those chips being at all a good value proposition. And it would take cheap 6-cores for me to move to s2011 in the first place. The 3820 is at $199, for example, but it's not a K chip. Nevermind the cost of a decent s2011 board as well haha.

I wasn't suggesting to buy lga2011 in the first place - just saying that wow, solder actually makes the 6-cores run very significantly colder than the quad cores at same voltage with a h100, even though they're pulling however much more power. Personally if i got an intel 6-core it would probably be for x264, but there's nothing right now that's worth it. Those new chips @4.6ghz score ~25.7 i think it was in x264 bench 5.0.1? I'm in the 20's with my Haswell quad. x264 benefits more from the architecture than other stuff and also gets ~5% more performance from avx2 to help close the gap, but as it stands, the multithreaded performance advantage for this case in the 6 cores favor is not big - and they have a sizeable disadvantage in singlethreaded. If they were the same price, it might be a fight, but with them costing a ton more, i don't think it's worth it unless you're running a super high end system and you want versatility and more than two 780's without a plx chip or something like that. Haswell-E coming with 6/8 cores and solder before skylake and maybe before broadwell looks super intriguing though.

It's not significantly better than sb-e in general, but it's setting up a good path. It's all we could have hoped for from a sb-ib refresh, and then more

So, all this in mind, there seems to be 3 differing courses of action available: 1. Get the AM3+ mobo. Upgrade later on to FX8350 or bite the bullet and build a whole new system. 2. Get FM2 mobo and a CPU close or slightly more powerful than the existing processor. 3. Wait until 2014 and get FM2+ mobo and processor. (and hope the NH D-14 fits on FM2+) Which one do you think would be the best long term option? I guess it's not a super serious question, I just enjoy getting the most value out of my parts/builds. I think I'm starting to lean on 3, especially if FM2 is dead too?( Carrizo going to be compatible with FM2+)

What path you should take really depends on your budget and what you plan on using the computer for.

The stuff on FM2 is mostly like what you get on AM3+ except with integrated graphics in place of L3 cache. That's not so interesting either. Future Steamroller architecture (so... Kaveri) parts on FM2+ should be somewhat better at least, but don't expect miracles. As mentioned above, it's hard to say what's appropriate without knowing your plans and future usage.

What is your budget? Around £400 give or take a little bit. What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080p What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? He wants to be able to play starcraft/skyrim/rome total war 2 comfortably at high. What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Nothing that requires extra juice to the system Do you intend to overclock? Nope Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Nope Do you need an operating system? Nope Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Nope If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Intel as the cpu is the only preference What country will you be buying your parts in? United Kingdom So basically he wanted a build similiar to mine with i5 2500k and amd 6850hd and then 4gb of generic ram. Its never given me problems and I can run almost any game I have played at max. I should also say there is about a 4-5 upgrade cycle.
