I actually can't think of a 120hz monitor on sale anymore! How time flies, I'll fix that thanks.
I noted the 85hz strobing because AFAIK the ROG Swift's minimum strobe rate is 85hz. It kind of goes without saying that if you want the ROG Swift, you better have the system for it and you probably want to be able to achieve 85hz at the very least if you want to use ULMB.
My impression is that when the strobe rate doesn't particularly match the frame rate, you end up with that abhorrent duplicate image artifacts and microstuttering which defeats the purpose of strobing. I haven't tried similar, but unmatched, strobe and frame rates before so I dunno. Its been a while, last time I tried this was with through Lightboost.

All of the ULMB monitors min strobe rate is 85 afaik
120hz strobing is a minor annoyance to some and a major problem to others, you're lucky if it doesn't affect you at all. I can't imagine 85 will work very well - and even if it does, dropping from 144hz to 120 feels a little weird. 144 to 100 is very easily blind testable. Going from 144hz gsync to 85hz strobing probably feels terrible, losing 41% of your refresh rate (like 60hz to ~35hz.. nobody would ever do that, and it's exactly the same for higher refresh rates!)

What exactly is strobe and why is it relevant?

It's turning on and off the backlight so you don't actually see anything from the monitor the majority of the time (and hopefully due to the way your visual system works, it won't look like it's flickering. see: CRTs).
The idea is for the display to be visible only during some limited slice of each refresh cycle.

I can't decide between Asus VG248QE / Benq XL2411Z / BenQ XL2420Z / iiyama GB2488HSU-B1. What do you guys think?

Out of those, Benq XL2411Z is the best 144hz monitor on the market.

Seller of this monitor lists a bunch of compatible and incompatible graphics cards. However, I run a HD 4870 which is on neither the compatible nor the incompatible list. It has two dual link DVI ports and is capable of max resolution of 2560x1600 so it satisfies the requirement in that aspect, but so do many of the purportedly incompatible graphics cards. Is there way to tell if the HD 4870 is compatible with this monitor short of buying it? Green-sum forces buyers to pay return shipping.

You might be able to find someone on www.overclock.net who can help you, but i don't think it will be

Well, I just set up an HD4870 to run two Dell U2713HMs so the dual link dvi ports on it work for that high of a resolution. Not sure about that monitor though.

Eh, posted this in the wrong place so i'll quote it here, just wanted to make sure it wasnt shit before i ordered it.

Not much differentiate the low-end monitors. If you are looking for low-end, there is a good chance that you will be satisfied with whatever you pick.

just FYI also, response time means something completely different to input latency (that seems to be an extremely common misconception, and i see wrong stuff posted by dozens of people when stuff like that comes up on reddit for example)
When i was looking at the cheaper UK monitors with firebolt, a lot of them seemed to use the same panels(?) and stuff like the stands were almost universally shit or at least unadjustable

Is anyone opposed to the PB287Q 4K monitor at $699? I believe that's the best monitor at the price

TN panel and terrible Windows scaling.

I have a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display, 2560 x 1440. In addition to plugging a Macbook into it, which currently works perfectly, I'd also like to be able to plug a windows gaming computer into it, which I've heard does not work unless you make sure all your hardware is compatible. I'm going to be buying a new gaming computer this fall/Christmas, and (if it's possible), I'd like to know what I need to do to make it work with the Apple display.
+ Show Spoiler +I did a little bit of research and from what I found no one was able to get a windows computer to work with the thunderbolt display except one enterprising individual who used a thunderbolt-enabled mobo and (I don't really get this part) virtualized his graphics card so he could send its output through the thunderbolt cable. Is that the only way? Or am I totally wrong?
Thanks!

Would you get any 4k monitor that's under 1k?
|
If I was lacking desk space and coding / excel was my primary concern then yes I'd consider a 4k TN display. Otherwise, no. 2x 1440p IPS or 3x 1080p are much better setups imo.

Anyone here using a P2414H@80Hz? Is the trade-off in not 120+Hz worth it to grab a quick and good looking IPS (note: the Dell has a very low input lag for an IPS). Can't decide between this one and a BenQ XL2411Z. Playing mostly Dota 2, SC2, BF4 on a 4770k, GTX780 - noted that reaching 144 FPS constantly isn't that easy in BF4 ^^
Currently still using my old 226bw (TN 60Hz) - so IPS would be an improvement colorwise and also 80Hz would be awesome (and i can reach that easily).
