VS229H-P doesn't have speakers. There's a 3.5mm stereo output jack, which only serves a purpose if you use HDMI and for whatever reason want to get sound output through that. Anyway, you can buy HDMI cables for cheap, like $2-3 dollars, particularly since it doesn't seem like you'll need some unusually long length. More than $6 or so shipped is a ripoff.

What's wrong with USB ports on the laptop? Maybe you're confused about what's going on, anyway. The U2312HM and monitors with USB ports just include a USB (2.0) hub. You plug a USB cable from the laptop to the monitor. So any ports on the monitor are still being handled through the laptop. You're looking for HDMI to DVI-D (dual-link or single-link), not anything to do with VGA because there's no reason to use analog outputs for displays anymore.

I guess I misinterpreted some of the information on the review sites then. It made it sound like the VS229H-P had built-in speakers with a stereo output as well. That would have been the only reason I would have gone for that monitor, so that just leaves me with the U2312HM then. In regards to the USB ports on the laptop you'd have to see a picture for yourself. Personally its just my "perfectionist" side kicking in because there is only one USB port on one side and two on the other side. So it makes utilizing all three USB ports on the laptop pretty ugly in terms of overall looks. The wiring just looks terrible for my preferences, no matter how much I try to adjust. I was actually going to buy a USB hub to resolve the issue, but seeing how the U2312HM already has some it doesn't seem to be needed anymore. Lastly I was a bit confused when I started thinking about my VGA port so I got the terms mixed up. Its been a pretty rough day for me. Anyways thanks for all of the help Myrmidon. Hopefully there'll be a great difference in viewing experience once I get this monitor bought and shipped. I've been stuck with using very old monitors for my entire life, so I'm really inclined onto buying a new monitor for myself now that I have a job.

Go through the menu and change Trace Free to 60, maybe 40. Or otherwise see if that helps. A modern decent TN monitor shouldn't have ghosting on a level that bothers the vast majority of people, but it's not like it's not there.

If not, get a CRT or go back to using whatever it was that has less ghosting.

Should really add the Asus PA248Q. I got one a couple weeks after they came out, and it's amazing. Newegg fairly consistently has them on sale as well: I only paid $250 for mine!

The monitor is basically a HP ZR2440w with probably worse warranty support. But I've added it to the OP thanks.

Cheap glossy eIPS finally? But it looks like the stand is only tilt, and there are no VESA mounts except for the 27" model (which is 1080p).

I think you mean... $250 is too much, right? I can't imagine you'd complain that they would give us too much for a certain price And speaking of the VG23AH, I'm wondering how come you haven't added it to the OP. Not enough trustworthy reviews to be confident about recommending it yet?

Yeah that's what I mean. Those monitors are too expensive for a pretty barebones monitor. The only interesting thing is edge to edge glass.

To be honest, I've been a bit lazy. But if I were to make up a reason for why I haven't added the monitor yet, there have been reports of the Asus VG23AH having some sort of screen-door effect. I'm going to wait for more people to get this monitor before seeing if this is an early batch problem or something that occurs with all of these monitors.

On a side note, its funny a lot of people push the idea that LG IPS and Samsung PLS are some bastion of good build quality. The stock technology is fine but manufaucring quality isn't really. To this day, PLS and IPS are still plagued with some freaking strange manufaucring/design defects. For example, the Dell U2713 has reports of image retention. This is 2012 and LG has released a LCD tech refresh that has added a problem that LCDs have, more or less, eliminated.

In hindsight, there isn't much point for a monitor thread because all of these monitors perform extremely similarly. The only time reviews get interesting is if someone touts a specific feature/figure and you want to check whether or not this feature works. For instance, LG monitors state 5ms response time (extremely low stated figure for IPS) but reviews prove that is bullshit; the current 27" Eizo Flexscan monitor has a game mode (which sometimes does nothing) and it works so well it has around the same input lag as most gaming monitors; Samsung's new professional monitor has hardware calibration and it actually works perfectly fine if you want to stay within a certain gamut.

I think you're looking through the hindsight-glasses of someone who is already too familiar with monitor basics and most things maybe seem too obvious to you. This thread has been extremely helpful for a lot of people. I frequently link to it and it gets lots of praise, so good work.. please don't take it down. In fact, I've noticed in your latest major overhaul that you removed some interesting info. I don't know if it was just cleanup for the sake of keeping things simple, or you were getting too many confused pm's, or what else... and I know it's hard to explain things properly to the uninitiated without getting too wordy (I tend to err on the latter side of too wordy / more info).

I'm looking to buy a decent long-lasting screen since my Hanngs 28'' conked out (see my thread in tech)

There is this asus ve228hr 22''
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-041-AS&groupid=17&catid=949&subcat=
http://www.asus.com/Display/LCD_Monitors/VE228H/#overview

it doesnt say anywhere if its Matte or Glossy

anyway the price of that is ~£130 inc delivery
i'm okay with the size. colour contrast is most important after my hannsg monster which had zero colour contrast. it says response time is 5ms. i cant figure out that display speed is...im guessing 60hz. again, is it matte or gloss? i think i need matte because im a bit pissy about reflection, but i cant say for sure.

so anything around that price you know about?
basically i want a super high quality screen, not caring much about screen size, price around £100-150
i dont game much but will be studying to be a programmer..., so that might help you too
i will be using only 1 screen but can be tempted to look at using 2 in the future i suppose, if 2 is useful..
i have amd radeon graphics card

many thanks

Need some advice on buying a monitor for some friends.
- roughly $200 budget, might be stretched to 250
- needs to have a good stand (or vesa mountable and please suggest aftermarket stands because I have no clue about good ones)
- primary usage will be office/school work. No need for great motion performance or low input lag
- preferrably IPS, though seems some form of VA might be acceptable. However, if they do decide to ever game or watch a movie on it, I don't want it to be completely unusable for that.

U2212HM seems like the obvious choice but I'm slightly worried about the grainy coating, I'll have to ask them about it. Are there any other options that are worth considering? Since the Dell literally has everything going for it minus the coating? (contrast, factory calibration, warranty, stand, USB ports, IPS)

@FFGenerations

For 150 quid, you can buy a used Dell U2312HM on Amazon.co.uk. Besides that, I'd suggest looking at monitors in a store a pick one that looks good to you eyes.

If you don't mind thick matte, LG has some cheap IPS options.

@Wabbit

As you say, the only problem is the antiglare. If you bump the price up to $250, you have the Dell U2312HM and Asus VG23AH as options. The VG23AH is a gaming monitor but its semi-gloss, not matte, and comes with a stand, a good calibration, decent contrast, and its IPS/PLS/something good.

I'm just curious. What's the difference between matte and glossy monitors? I don't think I've had either so I don't really know. I have the U2312HM in front of me but I don't honestly see any coating on it? Unless its the parts that sort of look like "grease" I suppose. The screen feels different when I slide it across with my finger compared to my old monitor. Am I supposed to be able to feel a difference?

Edit: Forget my last two sentences, after touching them between my U2312HM and my old monitor side by side for a minute they feel the same now.

With glossy monitors, you see what you get. That also means you have to deal with reflections.

With matte monitors, light is defused to reduce glare. This can give the impression of more washed out colours, lower contrast, and lower brightness. LG's IPS panels have a particularly thick antiglare coating which may cause whites to appear sparkly, which annoys quite a number of people. LG is aware of this and has toned down the antiglare coating thickness considerably on their new AH-IPS panels.

It doesn't bother me very much but the sparkle effect definitely noticeable if you have a semi-matte/gloss monitor next to it. So its got nothing to do with feel but how the image is presented.

Edit:
All monitors have protective coatings. If you touch the monitor's screen, you'll be touching the monitor's coating. It'll generally be a plastic sheet that is either clear (gives you the "glossy" effect) or acid treated (gives you the "matte" effect). These sheets are designed to protect the monitor's polariser as well as prevent it from splitting apart.

Here is a fun thing you can do with old unused monitors. Open the monitor up and remove the LCD panel. Then soak the LCD with wet paper towels for around 6 hours. Eventually you'll be able to peel the plastic protective coating and polariser off the monitor. You'll probably notice that the protective coating is attached to the polariser with some sticky adhesive. This is done to prevent the polariser from splitting during use.

With the removed polariser sheet, cut out some lenses for a pair of glasses. The end result is a monitor that can only be seen by the person wearing that pair of glasses. If you're not wearing the pair of the glasses, you'll simply see a white screen.

Wow thanks for the great response. Though the last half sounds interesting to do, I still use that old monitor for just whatever (streaming, music selection, teamspeak, coding, etc.). Maybe when I purchase another monitor next year I'll try that experiment haha :D

Thanks. Those were exactly my thoughts also, nice to hear that I'm on the right train of thought. I was kind of hoping there were some other reasonable options - because while I know the IPS market fairly well, I'm clueless when it comes to *VA - are there no decent alternatives of that kind? (the BenQ GW2450HM is kind of out because it costs like $250 edit:227@Amazon, same thing; and that's without a good stand).
