hi guys, recently was recommended a BenQ G222HDL 21.5inch monitor off dabs, which I went to order then was informed it had been discontinued.

I am looking for a similar monitor, around 19-21 inches (or bigger if meets budget), under £100 which is LED, HD or as good a spec as you can find. UK buyer - cheers

had this monitor recommended to me, alongside the BenQ one I tried to order - what do you think:

For that price, you haven't got a lot of options. There's a 23" Philips which should be adequate.

Any opinions on the Dell U2312HM vs the LG234V? Is it really just a matter of better ergonomic features and warranty on the Dell's side?

I don't know about the LG234V in particular, but a lot of LG's own eIPS monitors in that range have worse ghosting as well, despite using the same panels and claiming 5ms GTG. It seems like any RTC, if any, is not enough. But at least that means there's no overshoot.

e.g. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/lg_ips231p.htm

Do you guys know what monitor size they use in GSL/Dreamhack/MLG, etc?
Also what ms?
I want to buy a new monitor and I want to know the "standards" they use.

23"-24". Dreamhack used the Eizo Foris FS2332 if I remember correctly, which is a 6ms (this means little of you've read the OP) IPS monitor.

Sometimes these types of events and organizations just use whatever is sponsored, which also doesn't mean much of anything.

IIRC MLG's used the cheap Asus VH236H (23.6", 2ms... for what that's worth) at least at one point. I don't really keep up.

Well Ive had the dell for few months now. Its been great, but the only downside is if you have a really white image on a web page etc and leave it there for a while, after you switch to smthing dark you can clearly see the place where the white image was for a while.
Guess it has smthing to do with the antiglare coating stuff.

Are you referring to image retention? Or are you referring to Dynamic Contrast where the screen appears to change in brightness when you switch from dark to bright and vice versa?

Edit:
To clarify, it certainly hasn't got anything to do with antiglare won't cause that. Image retention is possible with LCDs and probably worth contacting warranty about if its actually true.

I guess its image retention as I got Dynamic Contrast off and screen brightness at 20. But the image persists only for a while and fades disappears in like half a minute? (pulling numbers from my ass), but its not like it lasts for hours.

Think I should contact warranty about my screen then and ask about it.

You should try these guys. It won't be as good as a true 120hz monitor or a CRT but those aren't IPS or 2560x1440.

The monitors are fine but are only able to run at above 60hz with some messing around in PowerStrip.

Edit:
To clarify, there is nothing wrong with messing around in PowerStrip. But its how you achieve above 60hz with those monitors so if you buy the monitor and can't run it above 60hz out of the box, its not the monitor's fault.

Careful with that ebay link...that's a fake frame skipping monitor. Just 60hz. The one on 120hz.biz is the only currently produced 120hz 1440p monitor anywhere. The guys at overlord are collecting money now, to have monitors made in a month or two. The cat leaps have actually been made for 8 months now and they're shipping in a few days.

I'm thinking about saving up money for a nice monitor to use. Currently I'm using this as my external monitor for gaming and it can only go up to 1280x1024 resolution. Which makes SC2 look a bit funky. My laptop only has VGA and HDMI ports.

Any opinions between these two monitors?

VS247H-P should be just a generic decent-enough modern TN monitor—bad color shifts due to viewing angle, good sRGB colorspace coverage but bad out-of-box calibration, very good responsiveness (and adjustable overdrive), probably low input lag, crappy stand that only does tilt but has VESA mounts.

You can read about the U2312HM in the OP and in the prad.de and tftcentral.co.uk reviews. It's a matte eIPS monitor with heavy antiglare coating, decent responsiveness, low input lag, very good stand with all the adjustments, etc. There's no HDMI input, but HDMI -> DVI converters can be done cheaply and passively with no loss in quality. The price there is too high. Often there are coupon codes for more like $220. There's an eBay seller now for $219 shipped, $235 on Dell's eBay store, but I'm not sure about Dell warranty support when going through 3rd parties or even their eBay store.

The cheap route is usually VS229H-P for $150 (us.ncix free shipping): same crappy stand as the other Asus VS but this one and the VS239H-P are eIPS and still have the overdrive controls, low input lag.

Thanks for the comprehensive response. I may go for the VS229H-P you recommended as a cheaper route, but when we're talking about a crappy stand are we talking about it wobbles easily? Although seeing how I am still saving up money if the U2312HM happens to go on sale I'll probably pick that up instead and get the necessary converter.

I just mean that it only does tilt. It is probably sturdy enough, considering the low weight, distribution of weight—shouldn't be particularly prone to wobbling.

Check those Dell coupon codes.

I just got my paycheck today and I can choose either of the two that were previously mentioned. However, I noticed that in both the VS229H-P that it does not include an HDMI cable. Do I have to buy that separately? Additionally are there any testimony to the built-in speakers on the VS229H-P?

Regarding the U2312HM it seems pretty solid from the reviews I've read. However would there be any drawbacks to using three or four of the USB ports on the monitor itself? I've heard from one review that you may experience some flickering on the monitor. Currently my gaming setup with my laptop is dreadful with the USB devices, and I was thinking about utilizing that feature the U2312HM offers. Lastly for the converter..is it DVI-D to VGA I want if I have a VGA port on my laptop? Or is it the other way around? I couldn't get this right the last time you guys helped me on converters lol.

VS229H-P doesn't have speakers. There's a 3.5mm stereo output jack, which only serves a purpose if you use HDMI and for whatever reason want to get sound output through that. Anyway, you can buy HDMI cables for cheap, like $2-3 dollars, particularly since it doesn't seem like you'll need some unusually long length. More than $6 or so shipped is a ripoff.

What's wrong with USB ports on the laptop? Maybe you're confused about what's going on, anyway. The U2312HM and monitors with USB ports just include a USB (2.0) hub. You plug a USB cable from the laptop to the monitor. So any ports on the monitor are still being handled through the laptop. You're looking for HDMI to DVI-D (dual-link or single-link), not anything to do with VGA because there's no reason to use analog outputs for displays anymore.
