Hi, my boyfriend is really into Starcraft II and I was thinking of getting him the Razer Nostromo for christmas. He's very picky on the type of keyboard he uses (he likes to be able to hit the ctrl key with the edge of his palm)
I figured this might be pretty cool, but i'm worried he might consider it cheating.... would it really give that much of an advantage if you just used it for hotkeys?? I've read that it wouldn't be allowed in tournaments, but if you didn't use it for macros then the advantage would just be ergonomic, right?
I've asked on here becuase I want an opinion with respect to Starcraft II in particular. Other reviews just wont do! haha

The Razer Nostromo isn't a keyboard it's a keypad. IMO It looks like it would give you a disadvantage more than an advantage (but i don't know never used it)
|
i know its not a keyboard. I was just explaining why i thought it would be good. (ergonomically might be better than using the edge of your palm to hit the ctrl key) why do you think it would give you a disadvantage?

I have it, and i only use it for macro keys..
|
if hes really into SC2 hes going to see this post LOL I would get him a Steelseries 6GV2 hell love it trust.
|
Don't think it's good for starcraft at all.. Too few buttons!
|
hmm I don't see how he could use this for SC2. There is just not enough key to remap every hotkey since almost every letter are used for something. And well, it is not allowed in tournament that's for sure.
If you boyfriend don't have a mechanical keyboard already, that's probably a better idea. And it will be awesome for everything, not just for SC2. I have a Rosewill MXCherry Red and I love it. I heard that Das Keyboard are awesome too.
A nice mouse with a steelseries mousepad would be a good idea too, if he don't have those already. Or some nice headset?
Seriously, i'm really into SC2, but I don't care about the nostromo. But that's just me.

If he really loves starcraft he wouldn't want to use a keypad, trust me(no one good uses it). I received it as a gift from my friends but I never used it... it looks so unconfortable and I love watching how the pros move their fingers on a keyboard and trying to emulate them. If you want to buy him a keyboard just get a good mech keyboard!
|
I bought one of these awhile ago for a different game and I barely used it, it would be terrible for Starcraft. I thought about what it would be like other day and I couldn't even picture it, not enough keys and it would be extremely awkward to use, if you can afford it you should get him a good mechanical keyboard, like a Steelseries 6gv2 or a Filco Majestouch.
Better yet you should just flat out ask what he would like, I absolutely hate getting surprise presents because nobody knows what I need more than I do :p

The nostromos is super gimmicky not really practical.
|
I really only used my nostromo for mmo type games. I couldn't get it perfect for sc2. If he plays mmos then go ahead and get it. But if he is really big into starcraft 2 then get him a keyboard. Plus if he were to goto a LAN for starcraft I'm sure most people wouldn't allow him to play with it because things about unfair advantages with gaming pads n what not.
|
You should look at just picking up a Razer backlit keyboard, since having the Nostromo won't do him much good.
Changing colors on the keyboard always helps ^.^
|
I think a regular mechanical keyboard is much better for RTS games than a keypad.
|
I agree with most posts here that it is not used for SC2. i would say get him a Mechanical keyboard black widow or Steel Series. If he has a mechanical keyboard already, check out his mouse headphones or even his mouse pad. Then I would google wat the closest thing to that is. Like what mouse goes great with what mousepad.
|
As others have said, I dont see how the nostromos can be useful for sc and to get him a mechanical keyboard if he doesnt have one already
As for being able to hit the control key with the edge of his palm, it doesnt seem practical to me but maybe if you get him a Razer black widow mech keyboard he can use the macro keys on the left side of the keyboard to accomplish this.

Filco Majestouch - Brown switches. He'll love it.

If you are looking to buy him a special type of keyboard i will refer you to the Mechanical Keyboard Guide on OCN. It is a long read, however imo the best present is usually one that shows deep consideration.
Feel free to PM, good luck!

A mechanical keyboard would probably be much better, there are many available sub 100$ and very near to 100$ (Das Keyboard, Filco, Ducky, Steelseries, Thermaltake, Corsair). The trick is just picking the right switch personally I would reccomend a mx black switch. Many pro-gamers use black switches as well (EG.IdrA and demuslim ).
