So my friend brings me his m11x r1 and hes got an odd bar on the right side of the screen, as you can see here.
The far right side is lit up, but black.
Also the task bar is too far down to be visible.
His display is set to 1280x800 and will not change to anything.
In device manager I only see his intel card, his 335m doesnt appear
Hitting fn+f6 makes the switch modes screen appear, the 335m appears for a second in the device manager, and then vanishes.
He's on the A05 bios, and the 263.08 nvidia drivers.
Setting him to discrete graphics makes this happen, and the resolution is said to be 1280x800
According to him he just closed the lid and opened it, and then he's got the odd bar on the side. That's all he did.
Any ideas what to do? He needs his laptop for univ
I tried a driver sweep then reinstall of his 263.08 drivers from dell, no change at all.
its alienware m11x r1 su7300, 320gb hd, 1gb gf 335m

reinstalled intel drivers, switched to discrete and installed the nvidia ones, no change but now when i restart it in discrete mode, here is what happens Crazy m11x r1 issue - YouTube
yes, it starts trippin... any idea what to do? i think his gpu is touched in wrong places

That sounds like a driver issue to me. I have had luck in the past with tweaking the more advanced display settings when using televisions or other unusual display devices with a PC, so root around in the nvidia control panel and see if you can't fix the centering issue. The visual artifacts described would be consistent with a faulty GPU as well. Or it could be a combination of them both.
I am 90% certain that a gt335m has a g92 core, which means any display driver released within the last 3 or 4 years should work with it. Roll back to a preview driver release and see if that does anything. You can also try installing linux. Ubuntu uses an entirely different display driver then windows. There are both open source and proprietary drivers available to test. If it works in linux, then you can narrow the problem down to your windows software. If not, then you know it is likely the hardware giving you trouble.

i cant actually get it to boot with the gf 335m enabled, only the on board intel card works, and when i boot with that, i cant get into the nvidia control panel, as it doesnt detect the 335m
from reading around i think my friend's gpu is faulty, which is rather odd as its just 18 months old and he takes very good care of it, theres not even a smudge on his keyboard

That is a faulty GPU. Your friend should RMA it immediately.

doubt he can RMA 18 months after purchase, but ill let him know
