Are there gaming keyboards with sturdy rubber keys,
or more metal parts? Mechanical keyboards are still a lot of plastic, if you ask me.

Gaming keyboards are a marketing gimmick, don't buy into the hype. You can play just as well on a something like a Filco as a Razer. Don't believe me? Just have a look at how pretty much every Korean not sponsored by a keyboard company is playing on the FC700R or Majestouch 2. Neither of which are in any way marketed as a gaming keyboard. Maru, Innovation, sOs, Classic, herO just to name a few.

Yes Rubber keys are a thing, but I wouldn't recommend them they are expensive and wear significantly faster than plastic.

Yes you can go all metal besides the PCB, switch housings, and stems but it's very expensive. The Pok3r with it's cast aluminum case is really the only one to have done it cheaply. But if the sky is the limit for your budget check out the Korean customs like GON, KMAC, LZ, and the many others. They start at around 400 and can cost thousands, can be very difficult to get outside of Korea, rarely if ever come with caps, and more often then not require you to assemble them.

$1,000's? lol wow. Very interesting and helpful, ty.

Well to be fair they are really only for enthusiasts who know exactly what they want and also have a lot of money to spend. They are custom designed from the ground up. Thick very high quality metals that are milled not cast, custom designed PCB and plate, and the highest quality components that are available. The majority offer full user customization as well, any layout you can imagine, any color and type of finish, custom made springs in any weight and type of stem you want, LED options, etc. All while being in very limited numbers.

If you where design all this and add up all the costs yourself you'll find it's quite close to the prices they are asking. A case will set you back 200-500+ alone to have milled depending on metal choice, thickness, and design. Forget the knowledge, effort, and time it takes to design it all, in particular a good PCB, writing the firmware and software and all the rest. They also go through multiple prototype phases where they make sure everything is up to their standard. So as crazy as it might sound you actually are getting what you pay for.

At least it makes sense to me. The stupidest thing IMHO is artisan caps. $910 USD for a single keycap? Done and done. It sold for 16 dollars originally

Anyone else get on the WhiteFox massdrop buy? I don't really play much SC2 anymore but my 60% Poker II clears works great with Dota. Having an arrow cluster on the 65% WhiteFox (I went for the True Fox layout), should help with my actual productivity (Solidworks, Photoshop, etc).

Nope but will probably end up buying one second hand eventually. I just feel the 65% wasn't the best size option for a keyboard that's main selling point is it's ability to be heavily modified. The two keys above the right arrow and the ISO right shift make it pretty much impossible to change the caps unless you use DSA, and even then it's another 30 dollars+ to buy the ISO kit for a single key. Which is unfortunate because pretty much everything else about it is great. The notched plate and the customizable firmware in particular are very useful.

Do a lot of people still use the leopold fc700r? Are the fc750r and fc900r similar?

I have one of the fc700r, I like it but it is probably more expensive than it should be considering.

They are still common, less so than they would be as there was no authorized seller for Leopold in the US for quite some time. The 750R basically is the 700R with some updates and without the stupid stem spacing on the spacebar. There's no reason to not get the 750R if you're seriously looking at the two. The 900R is more or less a fullsize 750R with more cap options and DIP switches for things you likely don't care about.

Purchased a Corsair Strafe RGB with the Cherry MX silents a while ago and really happy with it. Coming from a MX red keyboard the difference is minimal, both regarding the noise and the haptics when typing. The 'normal' keys (german layout) are very silent, backspace and space keys a tiny bit louder. When typing and bottoming out the key, not necessarily hard, there is the tinyest amount of 'stickyness', hard to describe, which makes it feel like a mix of 95% MX red and 5% MX brown. For me this makes no difference when gaming and is even a slight advantage when typing longer texts. The lighting modes are almost overwhelming and give lots of options even when avoiding anything too disco ball-y.

Drawbacks are the too bright indicators for caps lock and num lock, and the necessity to (auto-)start the Corsair software to fully utilize the lightning modes. The keys are also mounted relatively open and make the keyboard susceptible to dirt.

Do they make affordable tenkeyless or 87-key keyboards with cherry MX brown switches or something similar? I don't need any illumination or any bells and whistles at all, I just need a keyboard with all the keys except the numpad. Unfortunately, my current full-size keyboard is too wide and I don't have enough space for my mouse. Really sucks for FPS.

$60-70 CDN, I got tagged for $1300 by our beloved revenue agency so now I'm essentially a walking husk waiting to die.

Should have talked with Mossack Fonseca, I would recommend as I have in the past the QFR by Coolermaster, it is a bit above your price range but not more than 20 bucks from Amazon.

May have to go with that and not eat for 2 days.

It's really annoying though, it looks like the brown switches are $20-30 more on very model. Why did they make blues the standard, those things clack through drywall like it's not there. Brown4evr.

I'm sure this is on the first page in the OP

But I used to used Blues, and while I probably prefer them ever so slightly on feel they are definitely loud as all hell and not the greatest thing when you have a girl friend trying to sleep as you get a late night game session on.

Currently I use browns and I love them, an excellent hybrid of blue tactile and the ease of reds.

My cousin has a switch with reds, it feel pretty nice although a bit weird because I prefer the stiffer keys like blues and they accentuate with barely a press.
