Awesome, thank you. It looks like I could get the same keyboard with blue switches in town tomorrow for $80, or order in the reds for $110 after shipping and wait a few weeks. Lighter is better as I want to take it as easy as possible on my poor wrists/fingers, but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra thirty bucks.

I'm going to stop at Memory Express on my way to class tomorrow and see if the blues actually bother me or if it's all in my head.

i have a blackwidow and i love the sound of my blues, but i now prefer the linear feel of the reds.

There's actually a very good chance the blues won't bother you while you're typing. That doesn't hold true for anyone else within earshot though...

The das has a glossy body like the BW's and if you hate having to clean the finish due to oil from your hands go with the filco.

I have to say that, the surface area of the glossy parts of the keyboard are not really in a position to be touched by your hands anyways. Outside of the odd dust that collects over all electronics, I have not experienced any such issues with oil from my hands on the portions of my Das. Could be different for some people I suppose though.

Are there any good mechanical keyboards that are below $90 in the US? I see a lot of people talking about the Cooler Master Storm QuickFire keyboard. Is it the best for its price range? Any advice?

Budget mechs usually come via deals (e.g., watching newegg and waiting for their rosewill house brand to go on sale) or going with the razer blackwidow or the cm quickfire which both retail at under 90. The quickfire is probably the best deal although it is tenkeyless, i.e., no number pad. If that's something you want, then you'll need to go with the blackwidow.

Or 6GV2, although the layout takes a bit of getting used to. I like my SteelSeries Baseball Bat keyboard though. Seriously, this thing is nice and solid. Could hit somebody with it and still use it, as long as the blood didn't make the switches stick.

I spent most of today and yesterday doing research on exactly that and yeah, it looks like it in my admittedly inexperienced opinion. Same price as a Black Widow and way better quality, basically.

Definitely better quality. I love typing on my CM Storm Quickfire. Though I'm not sure if my family enjoys hearing it at night when they're trying to sleep though lol.

I see, then I think I'll go for the CM Storm Quickfire! ^^ Thanks for the advice guys! Really excited for my first mechanical keyboard. I heard people find it impossible to switch back after using one :D

it's actually a real problem with mech boards. when they can hear your keyboard through the wall then sometimes i wonder if it was really worth it.

If your family hears it through the wall and that hinders them from sleeping and they bring it up the next day... I wouldn't fault one for considering.

But yeah the mech keyboards aren't all that loud if you type normally unless you use blues.

Shine is backlit, thus most expensive.

The 9000s are the newer series so more expensive than the 1000s. Not sure the actual differences between each, but I think the 9000 is just more refined.
There are some cheap 1000s with alps switches (if you want to know more then google alps switches).

Last thing you should know is ABS and PBT refer to the plastics that make the keycaps. PBT is more expensive and apparently give better feel and less wear (dont have any so cant confirm this). Most keyboards have ABS caps.

I don't think there is any defining difference between the ducky boards when it comes to gaming, just choose a switch and use this to choose a keyboard.

most of the 9000 series have the media keys, thats the difference between 9000's and 1000's

Bluh. I'm reading a bunch of concerns about double tapping on blue switches. Problematic for starcraft? Would red switches theoretically be better?

If only I could find a cm storm with browns. D:

I don't have any problems with them, but i cant predict if you will.

Red switches have no chance of you having problems with doubletapping but then you don't get the glorious sound of blue switches under high apm.
