Why not leave the "talk" always on, just like skype? Because when there are more than 10 people in a channel you don't want to hear everyone's breathing / coughing etc. I think there is an option to disable alt-tab in SC2, although I don't know how it affects the Alt button itself. I would give it a try though. Other than that, I would just readjust to another key. You would be surprised to see how fast you would adjust.

I understand this sentiment, though after playing WoW arena at a high level for a pretty long time, and using alt to talk, I'm pretty comfortable with manipulating keybinds, etc while holding a push to talk button, and find it even easier in SC2 since there aren't as many crazy modifiers and hotkeys. And I don't know if I'd readjust just for one game :p, it actually doesn't really bother me that much, as I rarely have to talk when doing 1v1s, it just would be nice.

And I must say, your personal experience is either incredibly limited, or you should be in Vegas right now. The most annoying was the guy who you could always hear flicking his lighter to take a hit.

When talking in big channels(like 10+) you really need push to talk. To me there's really only 2 options. Rebind your push to talk or remap keys so that alt is somewhere else. Having push to talk on a modifier key is just stupid, there are 3 modifier keys and they are used in so many applications, I just can't see why you would put it there in the first place.
