My take is that curved monitors are great for single user, single position. Flat is better for multiple position viewing or multidistance viewing. Quality is the same as flat, but there's a bit of a price premium.

Depending on the game, they can probably hit it, but probably wait for independent testing. The HDMI 2.1 spec supports 4k@120, but it's up to the performance/optimization of the game as to whether or not it will work. You can likely output a lower resolution for higher framerate if needed.

okay thanks. Weirdly enough the curved ones are cheaper for specifically what I'm looking for but that might just be because the flats are sold out or their not offered in flat at 2k resolution. I figured the consoles would be wait and see I was just confused because I heard seemingly contradictory things.I literally have no content or video games to display at 1440p so It's a nonfactor for now. I was mostly just curious.

so on my computer when I look at my internet connection the link speed says 100/10mbps. I know my router is a gb router so does this mean I need to update the Ethernet cable? I can occasionally get above 100 on my chromebook and get more than 10 upload on it. When I test my computer I can get above 10 upload at like 11 ish. Am I right that this is an ethernet issue or is their some computer/router setting I need to look at? or is this something that doesn't really matter?

What is your actual internet speed?

Handy explanation

I learned something in double-checking, I have a lot of Ethernet cables accumulated over years and I’m pretty sure some are Cat5 instead of Cat 5e. Which actually may explain some of my own bottlenecking issues!

update it says I have a cat 6 on my computer which I should have checked in the beginning. So is the link speed just telling me what my internet speed is then? Because I'm pretty sure my modem should be able to do above 100.

Re-reading that one thing caught my eye was, ‘Finally, consider your router. Many cheap routers only support Ethernet up to 100 megabits per second so that the router will bottleneck anything newer than Cat 5. Even the best home routers rarely support more than gigabit Ethernet, meaning Cat 6a and Cat 7 are of questionable use’

Which sounds remarkably similar to the bottleneck speed you’re getting, might be worth looking up your router model to see what it can output?

Even if it’s relatively recent and all, I guess there’s a chance that’s the issue? Not an expert on routers (or much of anything for that matter).

I mean tbh I’m one of the few people I know who even cables anything, even with a tech savvy circle so I guess if the market reflects my experiences perhaps router manufacturers are skimping on Ethernet output, long as they have dual band Wi-Fi or what have you.

I can definitely look up the specific router and modem information. It says gb router on it so I always assumed it could do gb ethernet. The modem came straight from the cable company but I guess I can look that up too. Thanks for the tips. at this point though I think the most likely answer is probably just that I'm only getting the internet I pay for so the bottleneck is my Internet plan (and to an extend my location cause I think it was the most we could get where we are.) I guess If I'm really curious I can just plug into my modem and see what I get and how it compares to double check.

update 2. My router can go gb. my modem can do up to 500mb and all of my settings in my ethernet connection that I could find are correct. I may mess around with another cable for fun but It looks like its just auto adjusting to my internet speed as best I can tell. at least that's my best guess with my limited knowledge.

Conflating a lot of things here.

The 10/100 listed by your computer is your NIC (network interface controller), which the most it's designed to support. Thats megabits per second, so divide by 8 for megabytes. In practice you'll get less a little than that amount on average under ideal circumstances. This also assumes you have the correct driver installed, as a generic driver may only give you 10/100 speeds even if the NIC can do 1000.

Cat 5 cable is old, but still around, 5e is ~20 years old now and will support 1000 (gigabit), and 6 will as well. You won't see any appreciable difference between 5e and 6 in a normal home setup. These days it's very uncommon to find cat5 cable and it's probably not your issue.

Some routers, including ones currently on the market, support 1000 speeds via WIFI, but NOT via wired (e.g. Netgear R6080). Other routers may support 1000 speeds on wired but still use older WIFI standards and have slower WIFI speeds.

Next, there's the upload and download speeds from your ISP, which will go up to the maximum they list (or close enough), but in many cases will be lower (sometimes quite a bit, ISPs oversell their capacity regularly and their terms basically says their speeds are just "up to").

Additionally, if you're using cable, your modem has maximum speeds that it will support as well.

If you use a switch between your device and the router, that will also need to support the gigabit speeds.

You need all of the parts between your computer and ISP to support the full speed for you to be able to get it.

So, all that said, you really need to collect the following: brand/model of your router, modem, motherboard (or PCI/PCIe card if using that for your NIC), ISP information, and any switches.

okay thanks. I'm probably upgrading my computer at some point in the future so maybe my computer is just old then. my motherboard in some sabertooth/sabercat that's like 8 years old if that matters. I checked the specific router and modem and their good in terms of being able to do well above 100. I supposed I can try to look at the NIC and see if theres anything to do there. I think it said my drivers were up to date though.

I played with my settings and set everything I could find to gigabyte and yeah looks like motherboard may be the issue. Oh well. Guess its time to look at getting a new one. I suppose I can always look at my router and modem settings If I'm bored. Thanks for the clarification. I know for a fact where on like around a 100 mb plan so it's not a big deal. I was just wondering if there was a computer bottleneck that was an easy fix. I guess not

You can get a PCIe NIC to do gigabit for like $15-20.

Gigabit ethernet has been standard on motherboards for 10+ years, I'd be extremely surprised if your motherboard was the problem. If your motherboard and router support it, it's more likely a damaged cable / connector (gigabit requires all 8 conductors, 10/100 can run over only 4).

I don't think the computer would report it as 10/100 even if there was an issue with the cable, though.

edit 2. I am a moron. It was attached to a 100 mb internet switch that I didn't realise. I thought it was hooked up to the router. a cat 6 should be fine for 1gb internet speeds right? so I just need a new switch and a fast enough cord for it right?

on main computer I'm only getting like 107 anyway with a gb so not a big deal. I'll keep an eye on it for a few days to see if its worth spending the 25 bucks on. internet switches are way cheaper on amazon but its super backed up and I don't want to mess with bestbuy price matching at this time. I want to see how much it actually matters before I spend the money right now.

thanks for all the help. I learned a lot about how internet speed works.

Sure, cat6 would be more than enough. If you can, try plugging what you already have into the router to test it out. Just remember to keep in mind the difference between MB/s (megabytes) and Mb/s (megabits; 8x megabytes).

tried a dif cord that was plugged into the router and it works. in terms of performance I went from like 85 to 110 on the speedtest site. I think all I need for now is just a longer cord cause the other stuff doesn't need marginally faster internet. works for now just have to move one ethernet cord If i want to do use it for my laptop in another room. glad it ended up being something obvious and easy.

I bought a 90 dollar ips monitor 21.5" and it looks good but when I look at a word document the letters seem fuzzier than on all my other devices which are also 1080p monitors including my larger monitor. Is this because I bought a cheap monitor or is this some weird feature of IPS monitors everything I read said they should look clearer? I'm keeping the monitor I'm just curious about if I buy stuff in the future if there's something to be aware of. Anyone know of anything that it might be?

It may also be my eyes just not adjusting yet or something. Seems more noticeable when I use my old mac instead of my chromebook but I'm not 100 percent sure. I'm not sure how to show this without trying to pull out my camera and taking pictures which is a lot of work and I have no idea how well that would even work.

I hooked up a pair of IP cameras to my network and I'm saving data to a NAS at about 1.5 MB/s. I'm finding that within about half a day my router chokes and I have to restart it or force it to reapply settings in order for devices to work again. I can access the router itself, but not the Internet. In browsers I get a "network changed" error.

I thought that by moving all of the camera traffic off the router via a switch I would bypass this issue, but it's still occurring. Any ideas on what I could try? The router is a Netgear R6220.

Update firmware on the router if it's not the latest version and hope it's fixed

I installed OpenWRT on the router and so far as I haven't had any more issues.

random straightforward question. How does HDMI with ethernet work ? I've read articles but what does the actual set up look like and what's the point. Does it mean that you can just run an ethernet to your console/bluray player and/or use wireless then when you connect it to the TV via your hdmi+ethernet cable the tv has internet? If so does it always work or only if their both on?
