With the supposedly dead drive unplugged, if I simply start up the pc normally I'll end up getting 100% cpu usage spikes and application hangs causing eventual crashes of anything intensive. My suspicion is that what's causing it are a ton of utility programs/driver software having been installed on the drive that is now no longer present. If I boot to safe mode, the issue seems to be gone. Similarly, if I turn off all services/startup items in MSconfig it also seemingly is fine. I've tried to systematically uninstall or otherwise remove all these utilities, but some of them just don't appear anywhere I would feel comfortable manually deleting. So question now is, am I best off simply reinstalling windows and subsequently formatting everything, or is there any solution you might propose that could otherwise fix it?

Also, will a better Wireless routers improve the quality of the signal on old devices? We have tablets/laptops/cellphones that might only be N (802.11 b/g/n), or maybe even lower. Only my sister has a relatively new cellphone : Samsung S5.

In fact, AC routers generally sent out 5Ghz, while N routers sent either 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz. 5Ghz has a weaker signal than 2.4Ghz has by definition (it is especially worse when there are walls). So it is indeed very plausible that you can't reach the 2nd floor with an AC (5Ghz) router, when your old router (N--> 2.4Ghz) was able to.

AFAIK, there are not many games who even support more than 24bit per pixel, and since it can (i'm not sure how xbox this handles) cost performance converting the bits from 36 to 24, so by default I should just choose 24bit. It has almost zero influence on your experience.

As to the more specifics, you'd be better off just reading a wikipedia article. I'm not an expert on the subject.

I just bought a LG Ultrawide monitor. In order to benefit from the Dual-Link technology, I need to get a Display port cable. Will a displayport to HDMI cable work? Or do I need a Displayport to minidisplay port only? (My GPU has mini dp) Also, I'm a little confused about Mini-dp vs Thunderbolt? Same thing?

I'd just use the mini-dport plug in any event to avoid the 2 monitor limitation the other ports have. I think you'd be fine with HDMI but beware the 1080p only adapters. If the card is HDMI >= 1.4 it'll work, otherwise I think it won't.

The only thing i'm worried about is the ram. I plan on getting the 512 GB hard drive because i actually want to be able to store some media on here, mostly games and maybe some episodes of shows that i really like since i don't have any other adequate laptop. Other than that, it'll be just for school / work. How is the ram management on OSX? I'm not sure if i can get by on 8gb since i can't get by with that on windows. though the price is pretty steep at that point ;_;

That being said, I have not been getting smooth frame rates on modern MMOs and graphic intensive games such as Blade and Soul, and The Witcher 3 so I am looking to upgrade to a more modern card. Is EVGA GeForce GTX 960 a sufficient upgrade for modern games with my CPU or should i go for higher/lower price points?

It happened while browsing internet and once while launching hearthstone but it never really happenned ingame. The monitor does not turn off, rather the screen renders black over the entire screen, once it went grey. This computer is now 6 years old (desktop + monitor). I replaced roughly 6 months ago my PSU and GPU. Everything was fine untill a few weeks ago when that event happenned. Now i'm worried that my desktop is dying on me or there is a problem with my gpu or psu. This issue is 'solved' by forcefully powering off the machine and restarting it. The GPU is an nvidia 960 2go with most recent drivers, and I have windows 7. Any help is appreciated. I'll give you a cookie. ( a physical food-type cookie, that is. :D ) Sorry if this is a wrong thread, i don't really have a specific question apart of wtf can i do? I'm thinking of formatting the pc, i scanned for virus/malwares, nothing.
