Of course, if you got this thing from Craigslist, there may have been a problem with it. I would not post the problem without quadruple checking and reinstalling the firmware first. I mean... i could tell you why a 10 year old CPU wouldn't work, it wouldn't work because it's architecture, core count, and speed is too low. So why is a 10 year old router not work? What specifically makes my router not work? It seems like it's 'up to par' right? I mean, 10/100 is all you need right? Do I need to buy a new router? Can i buy it used? Is a 5 year old router okay? Or is that too old? Maybe 3 year old? What exactly would make a router work or not work for me? Do all routers slow down the internet? Show nested quote +For games, the X6 offers practically nothing over the X4, so the choice between the two is easy. Keep in mind though that both processors are rather old models and while they're fine chips by themselves, they have been surpassed on many fronts by more recent Intel processors. So you may want to consider those as well. Best to just compile a complete list of the parts you want for your desktop and see what fits in terms of budget / performance-requirements. What intel processor for $72 is better than a MD Phenom II X4 945 Quad Core CPU because that's shocking. I didn't know intel made processors that were better than AMD for the price, at below .... $200. My athlon ii x4 is more than enough power to stream 720p starcraft 2 on ultra graphics. Why sell the guy the stars, he's only playing starcraft. obviously an intel is awesome. but its like telling someone looking for a civic how much better a ferrari is. i mean, duh, but he's not looking at that price range obviously and he's just commuting 5 miles to work, not the indy 500. sorry if this sounds hostile but just curious what exactly you mean. its no secret intel is 'better' but for the price. And seriously where do you find an x4 phenom ii for $72.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/80?vs=404
Intel is the better price/performance choice at every single price level for gaming. AMD will always cost you more. Thats because Intel has advanced their own technology while AMD has actually gone through a regression. The result of this is that AMD is now laying off a subtantial amount of its employees, and is seeking to leave the consumer CPU market.
And I see you have fallen into the "its good enough" trap like a lot of people. There is no such thing in computer technology as good enough when we all have actual numbers to work with.
In your example, the ferrari and the civic would be the same price. To make it closer to processors, the ferrari in this case would also get better gas mileage.
The only time AMD is worth mentioning is when you are going for one of their APU's which can be seen as a good deal, but since the main thing on TL is Starcraft 2 where processing horsepower is pretty weighted, you dont see it recommended much.

trying to grab a harddrive atm
can i purchase a 64mb cache 6.0gb's hd, and have it work on my older mobo that only accepts 3.0gb's sata connection

Hi everyone. I've been physically limited by my amount of RAM on my laptop. I'm opening a lot of game clients at once, which I know my CPU can handle, but my RAM cannot. + Show Spoiler + I'm most likely going to bump it up from 6GB to possibly 12GB-16GB seeing how its fairly inexpensive these days. Although I'm not too familiar with hardware. Should I be concerned about the RAM I get or could I blindly pick one and it would fit into my laptop?

I have another question.
Do non-black edition Phenoms have a semi locked multiplier?
For example, my athlon ii is semi-locked. Meaning I can keep the multiplier at stock x16, or lower, I just can't raise it (for example, i lowered my multiplier to 13.5, but raised it to 253, and by tweaking lowering my multiplier and raising the fsb i was able to basically tweak my overclock by 5mhz).
Everything I've searched online just says people saying the multiplier is locked... which it could be, but everyone also says the athlon ii is locked, which isn't necessarily true, it's semi-locked.
Please, someone who maybe has a non-black edition phenom, reply. I've definitely googled this, i'm aware what a black edition means.
after 30 minutes of searching i found the answer at wikipedia. non black edition phenoms have a semi-locked multiplier, allowing you to lower the multiplier. meaning OEM phenoms and non-be are just as good as be if you know what to do.
i suppose this is just a rhetorical question... but why in the world would you ever pay premium and buy a black edition cpu unless you maybe didn't know what you were doing or were new to overclocking, if you know that the only way to get a truly fine-tuned overclock in both the cpu and entire system, is by tweaking the fsb? i guess some people aren't bothered that their overclock isn't down to the 5 mhz.

I admit i never used an x64 OS (strange eh) so the maximum i've ever used was the 3 and half ram GB... and i never really reached that limit, and all the people i know also say that you never really need 4+ GBs... what is actually using up all that memory? you're doing hardcore video encoding/something like that?
i also wanna ask if there's a way to manually control the fan of the Nvidia GT 520, as i didn't find anything in the new drivers 306.97 (while there are videos on youtube of people doing that on older versions). Do i need to install an overclocking program just to command my fan? -.- I'm asking this because it's usually stuck to 40% and only automatically raises it when the GPU reaches 70+ celsius degrees... i know it's theoretically still fine but i don't mind noise and i'd like to have my system a little cooler.

Im using 4 gigs right now just browsing Chrome. Of course memory tends to get eaten up the more you have.
70C and up to 80C is fine. No harm is being done. Thats a day in the park for your GPU.
If you must change the fan setting use something like MSI Afterburner to do it.

So would I find marginal benefits from even upgrading my RAM?
|
I'm using 400MB on firefox with 15 tabs open o.O how do you even use all that stuff....
Besides, my GPU doesn't really worry me, but i'm trying to single out the cause that makes my pc shut down randomly during certain games (almost never does with Sc2, can't finish a game of the new Mechwarrior or WarThunder and others). I ran prime95 torture test just fine so i think the CPU is fine... should i open a thread with a better description of my problem?
I'll add another thing, anybody knows if there's some absurd way of adding AHCI support on Asus M2N-E sli? i heard the mobo's controller actually does support that, but Asus didn't release drivers (i'm starting to dislike asus mobos btw)
-unrelated, where should i ask for help on sc2config txt? i want to optimize my fps as they're pretty bad.

Not by an earth shattering amount anyway. Memory is very cheap though.

What PSU are you using?

What PSU are you using? Which is one of the main reasons I was fine with upgrading to something silly like 12 GB (even though in reality I may be actually using near that much). I'll just wait till Black Friday/Cyber Monday to buy it then. It's not that far off.

PSU is COLORSit ATX 12V P4 450W unless i'm mistaken
the GT520 should draw max 31W and should stay on 25W CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 6000+ at 3.02Ghz (factory clock) if i'm not wrong it is a Windsor architecture and should eat up a max of 125 Watt. i also have a Samsung 830 SDD and 2 external hard drives, which however have their own attachment to the power line 3 pretty old DDR2 Ram banks there's also an Asus Xonar DG audio card but.. well as i said, mobo is Asus M2N-E sli
I don't think it's a power issue, i think it's mostly an hardware failure as i've seen some weird blue screens (most common is the usual "IRQL drivers not less or equal",but i've even seen "a kernel thread termined while holding a mutex"* which i suppose was a byproduct of my mobos moment of madness (one day it crashed repeatedly on the bootstrap screen) and it never repeated
*that message would usually indicate an hard drive failure, but SSDs shouldn't fail that way i think
@Sovano, excuse me, what is Black Friday/Cyber Monday? lol

@Sovano, excuse me, what is Black Friday/Cyber Monday? lol It's one of the biggest sales in the United States. Scratch that, THE biggest. Practically a majority of big retailers slash prices on a lot of their items. There have been a lot of issues lately in the past years concerning safety because of this. Personally I'm saving up money at the moment to go sleep out in front of a store with my friends for that day. It happens in late November every year. Black Friday is sales in the brick-and-mortar stores. Cyber Monday follows it up with sales on websites.

My keyboard (Razer Blackwidow) is being weird, yo. As of a couple of days ago my capslock key is somehow... rebinded or something to do strange things.
So, when I press it, the following text is typed: "y7m5n6 1` [-/b7" and my keys aren't changed to lower/upper case. There's also a delay between some of the characters typed, so it doesn't just instantly type that sequence, which means that I can't do anything for a few seconds. I also tried pressing it a bunch while in SCII, and it alt/tabbed to desktop, opened up SC:BW (on my taskbar) and moved SCII to my secondary monitor. O_o lol
I considered just getting a small program to rebind capslock to ctrl or something, or going into the registry, but I thought it'd be best to come here. Fortunately I don't really need the capslock key, so it's I'm not really mad; I'm not yet at the point of anger and frustration. :D
EDIT:: FIXXEDDDD!!!!!!!!!

That's Razer BWs for you...*sigh* Although remapping the keys with a program or altering your registry may be the best choice. I'm not too sure if the BW has drivers that come with the keyboard, but knowing Blizzard I'm willing to bet it does. Have you tried looking into your settings there? If not even uninstalling it and trying caps lock then?

DURRRRR!!!!!! I went to open my driver and it wasn't responding, so I reinstalled and was able to fix it. thx thx.

i own a blackwidow too and it has never given me these problems... worst bug it has is sometimes, when writing too fast i think the antighosting stuff screws up and writes a single "7" (happens like 0,1% of the time). I know i feel kinda dumb in asking that, but you have Razer's Synapse 2.0 drivers installed? And are you sure you didn't activate a macro involontarily and bound it to capslock? cause if you press FN key + ALT GR key you activate macro mode on the fly (red led) and you can bind a normal key to a macro by mistake (i know i did that more than twice) you can easily reset that in the drivers tho, you open up Razer's Synapse and caps lock should be green, you click on that and set it to "defaul" and you're done
@Sovano what does blizzard have to do here? lol, i think you meant Razer.
edit:aww, ninjaed T_T btw, my question still stands, up in this thread

so my comp just died. When i try to start it, the monitor is not responding at all. The computer starts but the monitor is dead. What you think coulda caused it?

Try bringing everything down and completely off. And then powering it back on again. Monitor first.
Make sure everything is completely off, standby doesnt count.
