Fan control is nice, although it increases the fan noise. The best solution is CoolBook, which undervolts your computer. You don't decrease performance but you decrease temperature.

ok thanks to all, and I use my computer on a stand that elevates it half a foot off the ground called the griffin elevator stand.

Most of the time, when you are referring to the temperature of a computer component, it is given in celsius. So yes it is necessary to ask to ensure that it is not the sensor malfunctioning.

I know for a fact that the late 08 MBPs have a vid card problem causing overheating, as mine continually runs above 100C, I'd suggest getting SMC fan control and keep your fans above 6000rpm =/
