Hi,
since I bought Starcraft II I had the aim of getting under the top 5 in my division of the highest possible league and stay there for 2 atleast weeks. Glad I made it before they open grand masters XD. Might not seem too hard for some of you here but for me it was a shitload of work since I started as a really bad bronze player and had to fight my way to the top which took me 4 months of hard work and 1293 ladder matches. Now that I have achieved this goal I want to make myself a present and buy the best possible input devices (keyboard/headset/mouse/mousepad). I need a new mouse and headset anyway.
So pls tell me, what's the best stuff i can get at the moment. I read a lot of how great mechanical keyboards are but then also a lot of people seem to have problems with steelseries g6v2.
Thx for any useful advices.

I bought a steel series 6vg2, returned it in a week. Bought a steel series sc2 edition keyboard, it sucked shit, returned it in a day. Decided to give the 6vg2 another chance. Turns out I was not used to it, and I love it now
Also bought a deathadder, and no complaints. I really like it
I don't know if there's a 'best' in terms of equipment. It comes down to comfort and personal preference. If anything, my advice would be, take time to get used the equipment u purchase. If you don't like it after a week, you can always return and try something else until you find what suites ur preference. gl!

What problems are people having with a 6gV2? I really like it... It's not as loud as people make it out to be, because it doesn't have the tactile key switches. I've been using it for about a month now and have had no problems with it. However, I haven't seen any improvement in my play as a result of it...
As for a mouse, I would recommend the Logitech G9x. It's amazing. I've never used / seen a mouse I like any more than this one. I'm tempted to buy a few more for when this one wears out.
as for a headset, I'm currently using the SteelSeries V2... It sucks shit for practical use. The cord is like 8 feet long, and the sound vibrates down the mic boom so everyone can hear what is coming out of your headset. Don't get it. It's my only experience with a high end head set, so sorry I can't recommend one that I like.
congrats on top 5 in masters. :-D

i got the deathadder with goliathus control mouse mat really really good would recommend it to anyone and when it comes to the keyboard i got the razer arctoza but i think the blackwidow is probs better for RTS also hmmm maybe get just the razer starcraft 2 devices they look pretty sick (and yes i am a Razer fan boy!)

I also have a deathadder, It's like the 3rd one I've owned and I love it. I have a logitech g15, but I don't particularly recommend it as you can get a better mechanical board for the same price. I've had it for about 3 years and never had any problems until SC2 came out. Now my "E" key sticks and my Ctrl key isn't reliable. I play Protoss, so that blows lol. Def go with a mechanical board since it will last way longer and you don't have to press the keys as hard.

Mouse: Razer DeathAdder or Mamba (Good form factor and sensor, very comfortable) Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow or BlackWidow Ultimate (Mechanical keyboards FTW) Mousepad: Razer Goliathus Control or Razer Vespula (You need precise movement for an RTS and a wrist wrest is nice)
I use the DeathAdder and BlackWidow, hoping to get a Vespula soon.
Go for the second option if you are willing to spend anything, first is for budget.
Headphones: It's really a matter of personal choice. I use Bose QC3s, but they don't have a mic. I don't really know that much about headphones anyway, so ask someone else.

For mice, check out ESreality or http://www.overclock.net/mice/ ... these are the only two sites I've found that have mice fanatics like myself.
Mice I'd recommend:
Microsoft: WMO, IE3.0, IMO 1.1 (probably the most popular mice in the progaming scene, but they are 400 DPI and have a wheel jump issue)
Logitech: MX518 - pretty much perfect, but polling rate is stuck at 125hz unless you hack it. It also has mouse prediction that you can't disable.
I dislike Razer products with a passion... the only good thing they've made so far in my opinion is the Deathadder. I hear good things about the Steelseries Xai, even if it has positive acceleration due to the sensor, but I've lost faith in SS after they posted this: http://faq.steelseries.com/questions/194/Does the Kinzu have mouse acceleration?.
Also, Puretrak is releasing it's first mouse this month, which is supposed to be "perfect." As in, low liftoff distance, toggle-able prediction, 1000 hz polling rate, and perfect tracking. I'm going to read reviews about it first though... but I would have waited for this if I didn't just buy another $50 mouse.
Just keep in mind that DPI is one of the last things you should consider when buying a new mouse. Sensor quality is much more important.
Mousepad: Puretrak Talent is extremely popular, but it's $25. Steelseries QcK line is also very popular.
Headset: I haven't heard of any headset than can compare in sound quality with high tier headphones. Get a pair of good headphones and a separate mic if you want good sound.

Thx for the useful Advices so far. I'm still not entirely sure about the Keyboard. I heard "Das Keyboard" seems to be rly good. Can anybody contribute experiences. Do mech. keyboards have (slightly= differently) Layouts? I'mg using the old G15 atm but often used keys have become squishy over time. There's a hugh difference between pressing d or a and the nearly unused numpad. A lot of coating and stuff is also rubbed off. Srsly need a new one. I rly dislike the typing experience atm.
My mouse is the xm518. A great investment and a faithful companion but since a week or so the pointer has started to freeze during a match for nearly a second. That's insane in a micro battle. I've only expierenced this in SC2 so far (for 5 or 6 times). It comes along with the typical windows sound of a newly plugged in usb device. Anyway the mouse has lost a lot of it's coating too over the years.
My mousepad is a small, plastic thing that has become pretty uneven over time. What's generally better? A hard pad or something made out of tissue?
I had a logitech g93 (or something) which was pretty great in sound and comfort until it started to randomly screem noises into my ears. Pretty scary and unhealthy. I need a good headset which isolates me (my pc is pretty loud), is comfortable to wear and has a good sound overall. Dunno about getting pure headphones because i actually like to use teamspeak/skype and have made horrible experiences with microphones. Are there any good on the market? They're either super silent and you can't be heard or they are extremely sensitive and rustle all the time.

I use:
Razer Deathadder Respawn Razer Blackwidow Razer Goliathus Control Edition Razer Moray+ headphones
And i love them all <3
But really, stuff like that is all a matter of preference. Alot of koreans love the mini optical compared to a £70 steelseries xai, and its a cheapy mouse

I use 6gv2 and MX518 and I can not sc2 with anything else, in terms of gear it all comes down to preference so you should just head down to a shop and try the different things available to you.
Also, I got a logitech mouse (not the MX518) wireless one and it broke as in the middle scroll wouldn't click, like when you drag scroll on sc2, 1 quick phone call and they sent out a replacement asap no questions asked which IMO is quite shocking. Best customer service I've had which led me to buy an MX518 over its competitors (as well as being on sale for £16 xD).

get a mech keyboard for sure. Leopold, filco and noppoo choc are all good. probably the best choice would be the Filco. they sell them on Amazon for 140$ + s&h. Also read up on switch types before you buy
Edit: Never consider buying an overpriced rubber dome logitech keyboard. worst typing experience ever and you could have a mech keyboard for ~20$ more

I suggest you the SteelSeries ikari Laser. I used to play with a logitech G5 but after a couple of games I'm very happy of my new mouse. A must have.
For the keyboard take a look at the logitech G15. Low price, lights, and little display on the top of the keyboard.

I <3 razer
I used to swear by logitech until i discovered razer.
I use the:
Keyboard: Razer Lycosa Mirror (love the feel of the keys and the light up effect....don't need flashy LED screens like the logitech games for an RTS game
Mouse: Razer Naga, supposedly its an MMO mouse cause of the # buttons on the side, but i like them for group control A LOT. and i loooove the feel it has on my hand.
Headset = Razer Carcharias, the one below the super awesome megaladon.. I didn't need 7.1 for a RTS game so I went this way. I LOVE them
my favorite thing about Razer is the comfort level of all their products and the grip that the mouse and keyboard seem to have.
|
Filco Majestouch Blues -Keyboard Razer Abyssus -Mouse Razer Goliathus Control -Pad Separate headphones/mic.
It's a lot more comfortable for me to have a separate headphone/mic. It also means my sound won't echo so that's always good. I love my Abyssus. I have pretty small hands (The abyssus seems to be pretty big in comparison to my hand) but I really love the mouse. I haven't experienced any tracking problems that people talk about with the mousepad that I have. After a while equipment usually grows on you and becomes comfortable, though.

Mouse is completely dependent on hand size, grip type, and personal preference. That said, a lot of people seem to like: Logitech G9x or MX518 (G9x small mouse, mx518 larger, for palm grip), Razer Deathadder, or Steelseries Xai. For keyboards: Mechanicals have been pretty popular as of late. Popular ones are: Steelseries 6gv2 (black switches- linear, take more force to press) Filco/Leopold blue/brown switches (blues are loud and clicky, take a little more force than browns, which still have tactile (nonlinear) feedback but aren't as loud and clicky. I only mention the Leopold because one of the more popular US/CA suppliers, Elitekeyboards, stopped carrying Filcos and started carrying Leopolds. They're essentially the same, so buy whichever you want. Razer Blackwidow- blue switches like the Filco/Leopold, people like them because they're mechanical but cheaper than the Filcos. Some people don't like the macro switches and the fact that some of the rows are misaligned/different than other keyboards. Mousepad- most people don't care, buy a cheap one or whatever you like. Headset- don't go for a gaming headset, they're generally inferior in sound quality. Buy a nice pair of headphones and a separate mic instead.

I find that in most cases mechanical keyboards with cherry switches are basically the same, since they all use the same keytypes from the same manufacturers. Just go for the one with the looks/features you like and the switch type you like (blues=tactile, clicky, Browns=tactile, not as loud, no click, Blacks/Reds= linear- no tactile feedback/smooth the whole way through, blacks are stiffer than reds)

What you need to know about when buying keyboard and mouse especially for "high" level play is that its all individual, meaning one can like it and other can hate it.
When choosing for a keyboard you need to know what suits you first and what kind of fingers do you have. For example do you have fat or thin fingers, if you have fat fingers you'd want to buy a keyboard with more distance between the keys for example.
Also do you have "strong" fingers meaning you hit the keys really hard or do you have "soft" hands - you hit the keys pretty easily/gently. If you hit really rough then you would want to get a keyboard with more pressing depth on the keys and kind of stiffer keys. If its vice versa you would want a keyboard with very low depth, sort of really short press pattern.
It doesn't matter if its got a cool name like Razer Ultra-cool masters PRO SC2 keyboard or a standard name like Gembird shit keyboard. You want to look for what fits your fingers more and what is more ergonomic to you.
When choosing mouse you also want to look for those types of things. For example do you have a big hand or a small hand, do you have long fingers or normal fingers, what is your hand full spread and things like that. If you got a big hand for example you don't want to get some small, tiny mouse no matter if its called Logitech GT Extreme cool mouse PRO or its some no name mouse.
So you need to try out the mouse before buying, best thing is to go to a local store and try out all their mouses and see what fits you best.
You should also look for the weight of the mouse, for example I like medium weight mouses, too light and they tend to scroll too fast in my hand and too heavy and I react pretty slow, so that is one more thing to look out for.
As long as the mouse has 800dpi you should only look for what really fits your hand.

mousepad: if you're lazy: qck heavy, goliathus control/speed (i prefer control) or the best: Grow Up Japan Artisan g3 pads. Apparently better than the PureTrak which are arguably the best mousepads on the market atm.
Mouse: preference. if you like palm: deathadder black edition, zowie ec1/2; if you like fingertip/claw then g9x, kinzu, logitech g1, razer abyssus/salmosa/salmosa asian edition
keyboards: filco majestouch, ducky, leopold, zowie celeritas for mechanical dont get steelseries keyboards, they use mx blacks which just suck. membrane: sidewinder x6, logi g110 scissor: logitech illuminated razer tarantula
headset: audio technica ad900, ad700, a700/a500. any GAMING oriented headsets or 5.1 headsets suck for music. virtual "5.1" doesn't exist in headphones, and doesn't position any better than a good pair of normal 2.0 headphones. Razer headsets suck for music, as well as they break in about 1 year - from what i've heard from over half the users i've seen. the steelseries 5hv2 suck for everything except for cs1.6.

I'm not sure about the whole 5.1 vs 2.0 deal, but I definitely have better sound positioning with my AD700s (stereo) compared to the Razer Barracuda (5.1, and which broke within two months). Not to mention is sounds infinitely better.
