Hi,
I am about to buy a new GPU, and could really use some advice. Which one is better for gaming overall? I have been recommended the GeForce, but reviews point towards the Radeon HD....If someone could shed some light, please and thank you.

Look up benchmarks of the respective cards and base your decision on those values + your budget.

I'm not much a fan of comparing or ranking graphics cards by a single synthetic benchmark, like the above link does.
In the very least, look at results in games. If you want a quick overview comparison, this probably works: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/294?vs=306
Note that a HD 5870 costs about $225 these days compared to about $340 for a GTX 570. The HD 6970 is closer to being the GTX 570's competitor. Also, many people have had success flashing the cheaper HD 6950 2GB to a HD 6970, so it uses the latter's number of execution units and has the latter's performance.

A 570 is faster. It's also significantly more expensive and uses significantly more power.
If you're only playing SC2 with it, a 5870 does the job more than well enough at max settings.

you can get a 5870 for $200 which is pretty unbelievable since about 6 months ago it was selling for like $400 and it's not like games have become that much more demanding. most people can still get by easily with a gtx460 / 5770 and a 5870 is about twice as good as either of those.

GTX 570 is on par with the 6970. It's a huge step up from the 5870, and will really help when gaming at 1080p and up.
