6850 for $179 vs 460 for $199 6870 for $239 vs 470 for $259 Too bad the only manufacturer on AMD's side that offers lifetime warranty is price gouging...

Its just that, the 6850 and 6870 are basically mid range cards and nothing more, the 6900 series are going to be the things that are actually true replacements to the 5800 series.

The 4850 and its friends were the old mid range cards and the 5000 series threw a curve ball and labeled their #8### series as top range single GPU cards. The 6870 is slower than the 5870 because its meant to be - its in ATI's mid range lineup. You are completly wrong. When it was released the 4850 was the 2nd best mono GPU card from ATI after the 4870 It was pretty much like the 5850 vs the 5870. People think that the 4850/4870 are mid range cards because when the 58xx got released their price dropped but back in 2008 it was top range for the 4870 and mid++ range for the 4850. The 4890 was released months after the 4850 and the 4870 btw.

I was keeping my eye on the 460's but since these came out by the time I need a card I will be seriously considering hoping over again, however I must learn to love CCC because I just can't stand it for some reason.

So revisions are possible. On October 22 2010 20:52 SONE wrote: Which AMD brands do you guys prefer over others? XFX for double lifetime warranty. If you don't care about warranty than MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, or Sapphire.

Be sure to check NCIX.com (and use their price matching), MemoryExpress, etc. as they tend to have better prices than newegg.ca. A single GTX 470 is already more than plenty for ultra on SC2, but I guess you're looking at other games as well. A couple concerns: I don't know about the Frio specifically, but if you haven't already, check dimensions and make sure that you won't have clearance issues with the heatsink and the extra-tall RAM. Also, SLI GTX 470 puts out a whole bunch of heat. You also got an overclocked version of the GTX 470, which is even hotter, and the cooler is designed to exhaust a lot within the case. The mobo's PCI-E slots look to be 2 slots away from each other, so I can't imagine that your GPU temps would be so good. Maybe consider a different GTX 470, a better cooling case, and/or a mobo with PCI-E x16 slots 3 slots apart.

I'm not sure if there's much to be gained over something like a HAF 932, which would be much cheaper. Likewise, Thermaltake PSUs aside from a few of the model lines are known to be pretty mediocre, some or many not reaching their rated capacity. If you want to pay extra for a balling PSU, the 750HX was great--don't change that. The hardwaresecrets review has it providing over 900W in spec at high temperatures, so the 750W label is somewhat deceptive.

Onboard sound cards are pretty good nowadays, sound cards aren't really necessary depending on what you mean by sound recording. You're looking at an Athlon II x3 or x4 and HD 5770 or GTS 450. @specjr You can't fit a monitor with that resolution and a decent computer that will run SC2 well with that budget. Since you plan to build in December, wait for the time roll buy and prices will definitely be lower. Also look for Black Friday deals in November.
