Upgrade Cycle: Difficult to predict at this point, so let's say 3 years. Three months ago I got a Dell XPS 17 for $900 after tax with an i7 2670, Geforce 555m, 1TB hard drive, 8GB ram, and a 17.3" 1920x1080 screen. I'm back in the market because it was stolen, and would like to at least match those specs. I don't expect to find a deal that good in just a few weeks of looking when it took 4 months before. Right now I'm looking for advice on where to look for a good deal, as well as what brands I should avoid no matter the deal. I'm not sure this is the right thread, but either way, the only thing I can say is try the Asus G74 series, I know that it's pretty reliable, if you are ok with the look.

There's no actual budget, but of course the price would be preffered as low as possible without having to rely on unreliable hardware. What is your resolution? 1680x1050 or 1900x1080 What are you using it for? I was told it's exclusively to be used for regular office work and internet browsing. What is your upgrade cycle? A fairly long upgrade cycle, like 4 years+ I however don't expect it to be an issue with the purpose of it. When do you plan on building it? Within a couple weeks, but the sooner the better of course. Do you plan on overclocking? No Do you need an Operating System? Yes, although my friend might have the option of getting it with student rebate. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No Where are you buying your parts from? Any known and trustworthy(?) retailer that ships in the UK. I don't live there myself so suggestions would be helpful. As a basic Idea I'm thinking this: H61 motherboard I3 2100 4GB of the cheapest available ram Cheapest stable ~400 watt PSU Any cheap standard case with ports on the front Cheap optical drive Any recommendable monitor at the mentioned resolutions 1 TB 7200 RPM harddisk The biggest concern I have I'm unsure off is whether it's worth the money to put in a cheap dedicated graphics card, or if the integrated one will suffice.

I did specify a case, Coolermaster HAF 912 @ $50 : http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=55583&promoid=1315 If you want a nicer case with sound dampening material, you can look at getting a Fractal Design Define R3 or Antec P280 for around $110, $130 respectively. There are other nice units besides corsair in that range. Coil whine is completely random and can happen on any unit. People hating on the CXv2 is blowing the issue way out of proportion. People don't have a problem recommending or buying Seasonics, other Corsairs, Antecs, and so on even though reports of them having coil whine is common as well. And no there is no similar unit that comes to under $40 before mail in rebate, and under $30 after mail in rebate.
