You wouldn't want to waste money on upgrading a motherboard until you are getting a new processor (which will basically require a new motherboard and is the only reason why you would buy a new motherboard in the first place).

Edit: I obviously did the testing with the case completely closed -_-

CPU fan pointed down, quite strange I think, but I figured if it was too hot I could try pointing it out, but since the 120mm fan is already blowing air out I tried this first (and it seems to be okay). Perhaps I could even get VCore lower, but 1 hour isn't "stable" according to most people so I'll run longer / tweak more later.

Use Intel Burn Test. Prime95 takes up to 24 hours to properly test stability. Intel Burn Test should start shooting error messages twenty minutes in or after 5-10 passes. I'm surprised people still recommend Prime95 for stability testing, especially since no one uses AMD processors anymore.

After 20 passes with Intel Burn Test, chances are your processor is completely stable.

There's another stress-test tool that is often used by the Dutch overclocking/tweaking community that also works much better than Prime95. It's called LinX. It's an interface for the LinPack program which is also used for benchmarking.

Pretty much. LinX/Intel Burn Test are just front end programs for LinPack. Both work well enough and seem to find errors extremely quickly, much faster than Prime95 does anyway.

Still surprises me greatly Furmark and Prime95 still get frequently recommended in the age of the internet. Neither are good for stress testing or stability testing: one causes GPUs to throttle themselves instinctively and the other takes god knows how long to find instabilities.

Hi,
I am thinking about upgrading my PC, because i get random crashes and my gpu fan starts to make buzzing noises sometimes. Could you guys suggest me a reasonable (best bang for buck) upgrade for my current build? I use my PC mostly for gaming and office work, no heavy photoshopping but i need to do scientific image processing from time to time. I would be thankful if you could list some alternatives with pros and cons, so i can decide on the spot what would suit me better. Thanks guys!

Will this (microATX board) fit ok into this case, even though it says it is only atx compatible?

Edit: Will i also have any issues installing a HSF, or other components?

ATX motherboards are larger than mATX boards. Otherwise they use the same connections and mATX boards will fit fine in cases that support regular ATX boards (but not the other way around obviously).

Resolution 1920x1080 (native)
Computer use: For sc2 and streaming [i can stream 720p but the frames just drops way to hard on sc2 [lookin at down to 20fps lol] with current computer setup [4years old , /facepalm]
Upgrade cycle: nothing really i always just rebuy
Plan on building : A.S.A.P
Overclocking: No
Operating system: dont have one on hand,
No crossfire etc,
Will buy parts from where people suggest cas there smart with stuff i r not with computer stuff :D lmfaooo

Also would like to be put in a good direction for
keyboard/mouse/mousepad/headset for gaming :D [sc2]

Hello TL!

I had a similar post a week or two ago to this, but i made some changes and woud like you guys to check them out! Im looking into building a new computer, and with the little computer knowledge I have, I have picked out the components. I would like a second opinion on these components, and I would be thankful for any assistance you can provide :D

So first I'll answer the questions posed in the OP of this thread to give you guys some background information.

What is your budget?

The build I have created is about $1000, and including monitor will be about $1200.

What is your resolution?

I plan to play on a 1920x1080 monitor.

What are you using it for?

Ideally, I would like to be able to stream 720 on Ultra graphic settings. I know the computer can handle Ultra settings, but wether or not it can stream at the same time or not I am unsure. I would be happy to hear your thoughts.

What is your upgrade cycle?

I'm coming from using Macs, which you can't upgrade at all so I'm not completely sure, but I believe that the upgrade cycle will be around 2-3 years.

Do you plan on overclocking?

Yes

Do you need an operating system?

Yes, and I included it in my budget.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

Yes, not right away but I would like to have the option.

Where do you plan on getting your parts from?

Most likely newegg.com, but I am open to other suggestions (I live in US)

Alright, after taking care of that, here is the rig that I have assembled:

This was the best CPU that fit my budget, and I got the 2500k over the 2500 to have the option to overclock.

This felt like the best motherboard fit for me, as it supports SLI, Crossfire, and overclocking. Also, It seemed to have an adequate number/type of ports. I think 8gb should suffice, and I've heard its not worth it to get super-high speed ram.

I know you should probably change the RAM, the kingston hyperx ram runs at a 1.65V, you want 1.5V. Plus it's a bit expensive.

http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=55544&vpn=996770&manufacture=Mushkin Enhanced&promoid=1368 is 10$ cheaper and will be basically as good (1600 speed clocked ram is barely better than 1333, it's negligible for gaming.)

I'm probably not qualified to comment on anything else, I'm sure somebody smarter than me will give you other tips though.

Edit: Cheaper ram - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231422 35$. I don't know if it's a good stick though or anything.

Yea not sure why i thought the ASUS board supported SLI either... my bad. I think ill go with the asrock board you mentioned above. Do you have any recommendations for a relatively cheap case? And is tool-less features just that, you dont need tools for install or something?

Tool-less means no tools are required for installation. On the Antec Three Hundred Illusion, you need screwdriver and screws to install the HDD and longer graphic cards may block the adjacent HDD bay as well. On cases such as Coolermaster HAF 912, HDD installation is just put it in.
