What is your budget?
$700-$800

What is your resolution?
1920x1200 or 1920x1080

What are you using it for?
Gaming, everyday use, some photoshop and video editing

What is your upgrade cycle?
3 years

When do you plan on building it?
Around christmas

Do you plan on overclocking?
At some point, yes. Not excessive overclocking though

No

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No

Where are you buying your parts from?
Frys and Microcenter within 30 minutes away, Newegg

I am currently looking at the i5 2500K for the processor. I should be able to get it for around $150.
I'm thinking of going with the 6950 as my GPU. Currently looking for good deals.
Is there a big difference between DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 memory? The prices don't seem to be too far apart, so I'm wondering if there is a large performance difference.
I also have no clue what wattage PSU I would need for this system.

Thanks for any suggestions/builds!

Total is around $277. If you don't mind spending $20 above your budget, you can get a GPU that can actually run Starcraft 2 really well.

About to pick up parts for a new build, figured I'd throw it up here and see if anyone can spot any glaring errors or offer suggestions:

Already own:
PSU: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2700093&CatId=2535
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533 (got this for $80, now its $250, wtf?)

Intending on purchasing:
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119160 $120
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131730 $180
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130621 $340
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070 $320
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231431 $100
dvd/cd: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204 $20
heatsink: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018 $85

Also curious, since I've never done it before: Will putting this HDD into the new comp without reformatting it cause any issues? Really not feeling like reformatting again, since I just did very recently. I'm assuming its as simple as downloading a few drivers for the new stuff once its up and running, but maybe its not so simple...

Purchasing cas7 memory at $100 when cas9 is at $30-$40 is pretty stupid considering how the gains are negligible.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4503/sandy-bridge-memory-scaling-choosing-the-best-ddr3
http://techreport.com/articles.x/20377

It's better to put this money elsewhere that gives you a bigger gain. Maybe consider a SSD such as the Samsung 830 64gb for $95: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147502 or Intel 320 80gb for $150 ($80 after mail in rebate) with a $10 promotional gift card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167047

You might experience some issues by not doing a fresh installation of the operating system since the old drivers will still be on it and your new motherboard will require a totally different set.

A lot of HDD manufacturing happens in Thailand. Don't be surprised that HDD prices are through the roof right now because of the recent flooding...

Just get the least expensive burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151233

For Windows? You will probably find it easier just doing a clean install. Clean isntalls aren't difficult thanks to this. Its not like Macs where their migration system actually works properly.

Can I ask why you are spending so much on the CPU cooler, memory, GPU, motherboard as well as the reason why you need a full tower chassis?

You're paying triple the price for 7-8-7 1600 1.6v ram when 9-9-9 1600 1.5v ram is probably just as good at 1.6v? That's just ridiculous.

You also are wasting a ton of money on uselessness. Basically you've got a 1165$ build that's ehh really lacking in performance.

You can keep the CPU, change mobo to AsRock Pro3, change ram to a 30-40$ 8gb 1600mhz kit, change graphics card to gtx 580, I'd also change the heatsink to something cheaper like Xigmatek Dark Knight at 9$ after MIR.

You'll have more performance for less money. Also for that budget it's far more intelligent to slip in a SSD than to spend on a premium heatsink and on overpriced ram

I want to get a new computer to play Starcraft 2 on, because currently I am using an old machine I put a graphics card and extra ram in. It does not run very well. I found the optimized computer build thread, and liked the special addition, just thought I'd run it by you guys to make sure it looks ok. Thank you a lot for your time!

Questions
Budget: $800
Resolution: 1920x1080
Use: Starcraft 2, Team Fortress 2, and other stuff. I want to be able to run new games for a while.
Upgrade Cycle: Until it breaks, or it can't do something I want it to do. No plans to upgrade anytime soon.
When: ASAP! But I could hold off for a little if it were beneficial.
Overclock: Oh hell no! That sounds complicated!
Need OS: No.
Second GPU: No, I think that's out of my price range, and I'm not looking for anything that powerful.
Locations: I have access to a Micro Center, which is where I'm going to try to get the sandy bridge, because it's kinda sold out or expensive otherwise.

Parts List (slightly edited from optimized computer thread, removed burner, added monitor, updated prices)

Neo Eco is out of stock. This should be a decent alternative. Unfortunate it doesn't have 2x 6 pin PCIe power plugs but the Powercolor GPU should have some molex connectors you can use.

The monitor is pretty expensive for what its offering. I mean for $40 more you can get a Dell U2212HM straight from Dell's online store and its basically better in every single way. If you go for the Dell route, remember to abuse the warranty service they offer!

Besides that, there isn't really anything wrong with your build. Just remember to update your BIOS because the initial BIOS on that motherboard was a bit dodgy for overclocking.

Edit: Even better, see if Microcenter has some nice P67/Z68 + i5 2500k combo deals. I vaguely remember them doing some pretty awesome deals in the past.

I'm planning on overclocking, and I understand that the X2 responds well to that. Hence the processor fan.

The thing that worries me the most is that the PSU will cut it a bit close with the GPU running at full steam; 12V*25A=300W, GPU maxes out an 270W.

Essentially, I'm hoping to play SCII and Dwarf Fortress with a respectable fps, and to stay in budget.

6870 is absolutely ridiculously overpriced at 186€, please buy from somewhere where they don't rip you off.

The processor is overpriced as well, just like the mobo. For that price you could get something like G860 which is infinitely better

The RAM is insanely overpriced as well and buying 2 sticks of 1gb is just ridiculous.

That cooler sucks and is overpriced

that case sucks and is overpriced

Why on earth are you buying from some place that's trying to rip you off so horribly?

If you're ordering from finland, this is 666€ including shipping without screen:

Note that you can easily cut if that's too much, my first 2 choices would be to cut the graphics card to this:
http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/ENGTX560-DC/2DI/1GD5

and the processor to this:
http://www.silentrig.com/product/683/intel-core-i3-2100-2-x-31ghz-65w-boxed

Also note that the HDD is probably not available so search around <_< Either way even with those cuts it's still going to be way better than what you had in mind

Thanks. I was just figuring things were expensive because it was Finland. I think you just saved me a lot of grief.

Didn't see that was out of stock, I'm gonna use the alternative for sure. For the monitor I think I will stay with the one I dug up, because I value the $40 more then the extra quality, I don't think I will be able to tell the difference. Do I need to update the bios if I don't plan on overclocking? I know that I could potentially brick it if the power goes out during the process. (however unlikely that may be) Thanks for the ideas and the expertise, your awesome!

If you value money so much, just get something like this LED monitor or this CCFL monitor. 2ms vs 5ms is nothing amazing and the backlight used doesn't really matter either outside of power draw.

There's no need to spend so much on a TN monitor that uses a poor design for a base.

Edit: If you don't plan on overclocking, just get an Asrock H61 motherboard.

That's not a motherboard, that's the model of the computer (pre-built Acer). Using Phenom II on AM2 motherboards typically requires a BIOS update. For most pre-built machines, the amount of updates available is often quite low, so don't count on it working. But to be sure, you need to know the brand and model of the motherboard in the machine.
