Hi TL!

I have an i5-2500k, P67, 6870 system with 4GB of ram, the most I stress my computer is watching 2 streams at a time at good quality, or playing a modern game with a stream open on the other monitor. I can get 8 more GB of ram for $30 from newegg with the black Friday deal. Do i even need it? The consumer in me wants to buy it, but I have no clue if I'm even using my 4 GB! Thanks for the input!

It would be wise to purchase from multiple retailers if you want the best pricing.

I would take a MSI Radeon HD6950 1GB Twin Frozr III for the same price as the GTX 560 Ti: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=64182&promoid=1055

You'll want to switch the motherboard for a Z68 Extreme3 for $125 ($115 after mail in rebate) if you want to do a multi-GPU configuration in the future: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271

If you want to deal with mail in rebates, the Intel 320 80GB is $77 after mail in rebate, it's slower than the Samsung 830 but it's still much faster than an HDD, has a five year warranty, just as reliable, and is 80gb instead of 64gb: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=59826&promoid=1055

with the rising costs of hard drives, is it possible to temporarily use my laptop's sata hard drive for a newly built desktop?

Didn't see that. Thanks for the repost! Thanks for the additional suggestions as well. I've never built a computer before so my paranoia is driving me to ask this question; everything I need to build the rig is included in this, correct?

@Detrimentally:

If you need a wireless adapter and aren't doing large file transfers over your local network all the time and need those to be faster, take this for $10:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704045

Uh, you can take a cheaper case like the BitFenix Shinobi or lower if you really have to stay close or at $1000. Maybe find yourself a hard drive in a brick and mortar store on Black Friday. An external model is fine, since you can just crack that open to get the drive inside.

on a 1333 mobo, is there any difference in buying a 1600 ram vs a 1333 ram? if there isn't much of a difference, is this a good deal? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

Yes, $30 for 8gb is a good deal. On a 1333MHz motherboard such as the H61 or H67, the 1600MHz memory will run at 1333MHz. There is not a noticeable difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz.

Your 1600 MHz (that's the specified rating for what it should be able to handle without errors) RAM would be run at a speed of 1333 MHz, so it would be no faster than 1333 MHz rated RAM running at 1333 MHz.

ok before I start asking for advice on individual parts, I'm going to compile everything in one post.

budget: $200 (w/o gpu and hdd), but I'm always looking to spend less
the most taxing thing is probably playing sc2 on low settings

cpu: intel g530 $50
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1154135&CatId=7344

memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 $30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

psu: Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W $30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371033

case: Thermaltake V3 Black Edition $25
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133094

hdd: from my laptop

gpu: a 4650 equivalent

mobo: I'm not sure :\ Ideally I want this computer to last me around 2 years. that being said, I want a mobo which can be compatible with a mid to high end ivybridge cpu if the time ever comes to upgrade. i'm also not concerned with usb 3.0 and those other features recent mobos have.

oh yeah, I'm planning to buy the case, psu, and memory as soon as possible before they're off sale.

I'm going to buy an HDD soon, and these are the two models I'm thinking of

http://www.bimeks.com.tr/compare.aspx

Which one should I pick? I'm using an H61M-P21 MSI Motherboard, Windows 7 64Bit.

@Bleak:

.aspx page didn't link properly because we don't have your data. Could you link the drives directly?

@billy5000:

Sure, looks fine. How much is shipping from TigerDirect? NCIX (US) has the Celeron for like $52, but that's with free shipping. It should be that every socket 1155 motherboard will be compatible with all socket 1155 Ivy Bridge CPUs, at least after a BIOS update. If not, then getting a higher-end model now probably wouldn't help.

If you want the cheapest, then there's a Biostar option at $50 for you...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138332

I would say to take the Gigabyte model at $55, but it looks like the SATA ports would be blocked by a larger video card if you ever decide to upgrade to something better. It's worth looking at maybe.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128527

edit: on a side note, this isn't worth it now at current pricing with sales and $110 X750s and so on, but Rosewill Capstone is finally released for sale now. That's Super Flower Golden Green Pro (non-modular) in 450W, 550W, 650W, and 750W. 450W starting at $80. Hopefully that drops.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066

But even at MSRP strictly, that's around the same price as the FSP Aurum is currently listed at. These are significantly better, however.

Get the cheaper one. The interface speed makes no difference for these, and your motherboard doesn't even have SATA3 anyway. Both are single platter drives and should probably have very similar performance.

Are either of these SSD deals on Newegg any good?

OCZ Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC - $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227726&cm_mmc=BF2011_listing-_-636-_-N82E16820227726&nm_mc=BF2011_listing

Corsair Force Series 3 CSSD-F90GB3-BK 2.5" 90GB SATA III - $130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233204&cm_mmc=BF2011_listing-_-636-_-N82E16820233204&nm_mc=BF2011_listing

I'm not sure what to look for in SSDs, they both seem to have comparable sequential read/write speeds of about 500mb/s. Not sure if that's good.

Also, I'm curious why all the SSDs seem to be in the Laptop section? I assume they work just fine in desktops, and I assume that is what most people are buying them for.

Both are SandForce SF-2281 drives, which have a history of BSOD issues and compatibility problems with certain systems. Pretty much all SSDs and hard drives have histories of issues though. Sometimes people are unlucky. All the hate on first-generation SandForce (OCZ Vertex 2, Agility 2, Corsair Force, many others) may not apply to this generation, but it doesn't inspire confidence either. Most users have no problems, but it really seems like the probability of having an issue is significantly higher than with Samsung, Intel, Crucial (after launch firmware issues). The two you linked should have pretty similar performance since they also use the same type of asynchronous NAND flash memory.

It's not really sequential speeds that are that important to most people, and in reality, the SandForce controller does real-time data compression so when dealing with incompressible data, speeds will be significantly slower (but still faster than most SSDs and blazing fast in general).

I'd consider the Samsung 830 64GB at $95 to be a better deal, but if you need more space...

It's not as fast, but the older Samsung 470 128GB is still plenty good. $170 is a fairly good price on that.

Keep in mind that all of the above but the 470 supports SATA3. If you do not have SATA3, then they will be bottlenecked by the interface and would not be much faster than the 470.
