If you want to spend a bit more money you could get a better motherboard, better RAM and upgrade to a GTX460. You could also get a bigger monitor. However this build is pretty solid for $700. You could also knock a bit off by getting a smaller HD and a 500W PSU instead. This would be fine if you don't plan on overclocking. If you are a student you can get Windows 7 for $30 as well.

According to people on slickdeals, the graphics cards already shipped so the deal actually works!

if you have to download it are you able to put it on a computer that doesn't have an OS?
also is this available in Canada? EDIT - apparently the school I go to isn't enrolled with the MSDN AA....awesome
The student deal is not part of MSDN, you just need to be enrolled in a university with a .edu email address AFAIK. Its an upgrade so legally you can't install it on a new system. + Show Spoiler +
*cough*google*cough*
However its not too difficult to get XP for really cheap to upgrade from, just search around.
I have now narrowed down my search when it comes to laptops considerably. Within my budget I'm pretty much now down to looking at two different graphics cards.
They are the ATI Radeon HD 5850 (GDDR 5) and the nVidia GTX 260m. Has anyone had experience with SC2, a decent laptop and either of these cards? My desktop uses a GT 9800 which apparently is similarish to the 260m, at least so a friend has told me and I have absolutely no issues running sc2 in high in high resolutions and there is the suggestion that SC2 works better with nVidia cards in general / SC2 appears to have issues with ATI cards. Yet on the other hand various websites suggest that the GDDR 5 HD 5850 is a significantly stronger card than the GTX 260m so I'm left unwilling to commit to the cost of a laptop until I'm sure which way to go.
ATI Mobility Radeon 5850 will net you around 33 fps on high, which is surprisingly low for its name.
The 3D performance of the Mobility HD 5850 depends heavily on the used graphics RAM. As long as fast GDDR5 is used, the performance should be between a GeForce GTX 260M - 280M in the high end segment. Therefore, all current games (2009) should be playable in high details with high resolutions. With DDR3 memory the performance should drop noticeably because of the 128 Bit wide memory bus. Which games run fluently and detailled benchmarks can be found on the lower section of this page (permanently maintained). In the 3DMark Vantage tests, the impact of DDR3 versus GDDR5 can be seen. The GDDR5 version (on par with a GTX 285M) is about 40% faster in this benchmark than the DDR3 equipped version (on par with a GTX 260M).
Make sure it's GDDR5 and not GDDR3.
The 260m hasn't been benchmarked with SC2 on their site. But should produce similar results. The profile says it performs like a desktop 9800 GT.
If there's a big price difference get the 260m as it's probably cheaper.
Yes, Nvidia currently performs better than AMD(!) in SC2
R04R: I think you're right that the Mobility Radeon 5850 result looks low. It's just a underclocked Juniper (desktop 57xx), right, so probably closer to a desktop 5750 than a desktop 5670? Probably the tested setups with the mobility 5850 were the DDR3 model. The GDDR5 version should be closer to those desktop GPUs.
zekie: No prob. As a last warning, check to make sure prices don't shift between now and then. There's the chance that a deal expires or that a similar product goes on sale before Friday.
The only problem with that Zekie is that you have DDR2 Ram and motherboard. Both are fairly out of date. You would be better off with this combo for CPU + Mobo:
Hey all, my old Dell that I've had for 5 years just broke. It was fine for HON and WC3 but had to run SC2 on all lowest settings and lagged and froze a bit too, not sure if it was partly from beta or all my comp. But anyway, about to get a scholarship so going to get build a new one instead of Dell. Australian too, not sure if that makes any difference? Probably different power cables, not sure what else.
Budget is about 1000, pretty flexible though if the upgrades worth it. I'd like it to last 5 years before its rubbish, but this might be too far fetched with my budget.
I'll need pretty much everything because power surge fried everything. Never built a comp from scratch, taken a few apart but no idea what to look for when I'm buying, do most parts fit in most motherboards? or are they specific?
Figure i need a case and motherboard first, guess i can spend a bit on this so i can upgrade other components in the future when i get enough money. And i hear you want a lot of empty slots for upgrades as well. Will they all come with built in CPU/GPUs?? or buy them separate. Can i get a sound card and/or wifi built in??
Power supply/Cooling - Through the middle of winter here average temp was still 20ish degrees(70 farenheit), and can hit 35-40(100f) in summer.
CPU/GPU/Sound if they arent on mobo??
Video Card- Think I'd rather spend a bit extra on this as well as mobo. SC2 is main priority. All low settings are so bad. Resolution at the moment is 1280x1024 but I'd like to be able to upgrade some time soon.
RAM - Think i'll go 2x2Gb depending on slots available. Whats standard slots on a new mobo?
Hard Drive, we have a heap of old internal and external hard drives around, is there any need to upgrade for performance?? Because all it'll be used for is OS and a bit of uni work.
OS - Guess i should upgrade to Windows 7 as well.
Monitor at the moment is some average Dell one, 1280x1024 but i can upgrade that later. Speakers are fine at the moment too.
Thats about it. Is there anything I've overlooked. Help with any item is greatly appreciated. Any links to aussie stores would also be great.
swanny_11: I don't have much time now, but as a general idea what you would want for that price and hopefully long-term relevance is:
i5-760 (or i5-750) LGA 1156 motherboard that has 2x PCIe 2.0 x16 (can operate at x8/x8) slots that supports SLI GTX 460 1 GB 2X2 GB DDR3 RAM (that's the standard 240-pin desktop RAM form factor) some HDD and optical drive add-on Wi-Fi adapter card some decent ~600W PSU some decent case some OS (Windows 7)
[H] posted a great write-up last week regarding x16/x16 vs. x8/x8. At 25x16 and 4x AA (or lower), there is no difference. For 5760x1600, yes there is a small 7% difference. But that's at 5760; 3 displays, and obviously serious GPU requirements too. I think it's safe to say most on this board are playing at 1920x1200 or less; I would guess 1920x1080 is the norm anyway.
Has this been posted yet? What do you guys think of his $300 gaming PC build? I am a dumbass when it comes to computers and what parts are good. I'm in the process of building a new computer since mine is about 6 years old.
Hrmm, after re-reading some more reviews (particularly 4870 benches, where the 3870x2 is directly compared), the 3870X2 is definitely a good budget card. But that's the main thing driving this. http://techreport.com/articles.x/14990/12
The case is also at $10 - I can't find that from the mainstream retailers I would consider buying from. I am finding the RS201 for $50.
Yeah that build is suppper budget. He was finding used parts from a forum that's trustworthy. You can't get that performance at that price with brand new parts. It's your risk to buy used parts if you don't know if the seller is trustworthy.
