When using this resource, please read FragKrag's opening post. The Tech Support forum regulars have helped create countless of desktop systems without any compensation. The least you can do is provide all of the information required for them to help you properly. |

My friend isn't interested in overclocking, and so the only reason I've picked the 'k' version is because our local retailer is out of the regular version, and they're the same price anyway. Thus, a cpu cooler won't be needed. I was under the impression that the H67 boards were aimed towards non-dedicated GPU setups, hence the choice of a P67 board. I remember looking at some kind of website about the differences in boards but I've seemed to lose the link. As far as the power supply goes, anything from Memory Express would work. The main choice is either between Antec or Corsair.
The main differences with P67 are going to be SLI compatibility and OC potential.
H67 will take a single GPU setup just fine.

It is very unlikely that Intel will drop its prices on their Sandybridge processors. Bulldozer's performance is not expected to be on par with Sandybridge processors in applications that use less than four cores. What most likely is going to happen is that AMD will price their quad cores at the sub $160 mark and have their hex and quad cores compete against the core i5 2400, 2500k, and core i7 2600k processors.
@miL.
I'd get the Antec Truepower New 650w for $70 over a Corsair CX: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX24744(ME).aspx
It's a lot more than what is necessary to run your configuration but you could keep it for the next few build as well.
If you're not overclocking and don't need a lot of features or connections, go with a H61 board to save yourself some money: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX32903(ME).aspx

Hello everyone. So I posted earlier in the thread (about page 236 I think) saying I was ordering in a month or two but things have changed and I plan on ordering early next week. I've poured over the thread and asked people and such and come up with the following parts. If someone could look them over and give them a go ahead and or give suggestions that would be great.
Intel Core™ i5-2400 Processor, 3.10GHz ($189.99) Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 ($144.99) Kingston ValueRAM 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3 Dual Channel Kit (2 x 2GB) ($52.99) Western Digital 500GB Caviar Black 7200rpm SATA III w/ 32MB Cache ($54.99) eVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E ($229.99) Cooler Master CM 690 II Basic Mid Tower, Black ($99.99)
And I also need a PSU. That I haven't really figured out what kind of watts and voltage and what have you I need. Someone suggested 700watts but I just don't know and I don't feel like guessing.
All prices are in Canadian dollars. Everything is coming from www.memoryexpress.com and I'd like to keep it that way if possible. I'm going to be using it mostly for gaming. SC2, some MMO's, Portal 2 are all being played by me currently. Play in 1920x1080. May take up streaming too. Also some general web browsing and word processing, spreadsheeting, Potentially some AutoCADing and structural analysis/finite analysis programs. Going to be running Widows 7 64-bit. Also not overclocking since I have no idea what I'm doing (I considered getting a core i5 2500k to OC but figured I'd break something =)
Thanks everyone.

A power supply in the 400-500w would be capable of handling a configuration like yours. Something such as the Antec Earthwatts or Corsair CX. These aren't that great purchases at Memory Express cause of their pricing. The best buy would be the Antec Truepower New 650w for $70: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX24744(ME).aspx A lot more than what is necessary for your configuration but you'll be able to keep it for several builds if you wanted to.
Don't buy that motherboard. It is extremely overpriced for a H67 board, get this one instead (even if you are not getting a core i5 2500k, you can still increase the multiplier by four): http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX32728(ME).aspx If you are willing to purchase elsewhere such as NCIX or Canada Computers, you can get a H61 / H67 board for $60 - $100.
The build is good but most of the components at Memory Express are overpriced by a good $20 or more.
I'd go for the Antec Three Hundred for $70 instead: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX20934(ME).aspx

About the Sapphire HD 5850 Xtreme, how quiet is the cooler? My emphasis is on quiet and cool since I don't play too intense anyways.
I'm on a tight budget and really tried to go for quiet sub-150 without MIR. My first choice was the Asus 6850 but it's very unlikely to drop to 150. Not very sure about the 460s. The 5850 seems to outperform it most of the time. The load noises are a lot higher than the Asus 6850 load because of fan settings, but that might be able to be tweaked a bit.
Either the Sapphire 5850 Xtreme, 460 1Gb or 6850 1Gb in which I'll need suggestions for the cooler brand.

@sKyR
Thanks. What would the shipping costs be from say NCIX? The reason I wanted to go with memory express is they'll put it all together for you for $40 and then I can just pick it up from the store. Would it be a better choice to go with NCIX though?
|
NCIX does assembly for $50. Shipping cost on everything should be no more than $30 (keep in mind that this does not include shipping insurance which is 1.5% of your total iirc). Some items will come with free ground shipping for your entire order.
NCIX prices are much better than MemoryExpress's and they also offer pricematching.
You could save roughly $50 on the components (probably more like $100 actually) if you went with NCIX.

Thanks, I don't know how I didn't come across that link when I was searching. I'll give it a try.
|
Ok, so lets say I changed my mind and am considering using NCIX now. Would you still recommend the P67 mobo over the H67 I had?
|
|
So by using NCIX this would be my setup, yeah?

I'm just reusing the one I currently have. But thank you for those suggestions.

Awesome thread, a few website suggestions for UK readers: bit-tech.net is your typical review site with a useful UK focus, and scan.co.uk is the best place to buy parts from in my experience.

Hello!!!, I currently cannot afford much to build a nice computer. i have been playing sc for some time, and currently am still playing sc because my laptop cannot run sc2 T.T
My current budget is $600~700. I know how to build desktops but is not well versed in which are the best parts to buy. I do not know which parts are the best for their cost. I am wondering if you guys can help me! select the best parts for the best cost!. THX TL community!
