By the way, do you need a DVD drive? I didn't notice it earlier because you didn't include one yourself originally.

Hey, looking to build a pc for my sister who is a professional architect. the card, case, optical drive and power supply have all been picked out. What I'm looking for is the right combination of ram (8gb wroth), processor (I think she wants an i7) and motherboard and any other helpful advice I should know.

Thanks.

(note, parts will be taken from http://www.pccasegear.com)

Cheapest 2x4GB kit of 1333mhz memory, i5/i7 processor, and any solid LGA1155 motherboard. Shame pccasegear doesn't sell Intel boards because that's the brand you want.

Anyway, telling us that she's a professional architect doesn't mean much if you don't tell us what programs she uses and the scale of her work. If she's dealing with large scale projects that constantly churn through data, which is required to be absolutely precise and accurate, she might want to look into ECC memory and you can't find that at pccasegear.

Can't she just get work to buy her a workstation from Dell/HP/Lenovo? High end professional computers are all generally top notch and its often economically superior to deal with large computer vendors than do a DIY professional computer. You normally get warranty unseen in the DIY market, you can get bulk buy bonuses, and you can often haggle with vendors since they don't want you going to another company.

CPU is overkill, hyperthreading doesn't help in gaming at all and you'll probably want to disable it as it can cause problems.

GTX440 is a pretty useless GPU, at 1080p you won't be able to run many games past low settings.

8GB of RAM will only help if you are streaming, for normal play 4GB is plenty

5400rpm hard drive is bad.

Its a terribly balanced system for gaming.

Thanks, is there any pre-built PC's on tigerdirect that are actually good for gaming?

At a quick glance, not that I could see. Anything half decent is way overpriced.

This:

Was the first one I saw that would be any good.

Hey, everyone, what's the best mobo+cpu combo that's available in the US for around $300 (mainly for sc2 and streaming; no overclocking)? Also, is there anything new in the upcoming horizon (3-4 months or so) that I should look out and perhaps wait for?

Noooooooooo. The X6 is horrible for gaming too. The 6850 is much better than the GTX440, but on a 1k budget it shouldn't be in consideration at all.

Is the only difference between the 2400 and 2500 the clock speed and are the differences noticeable? Also, is there like a centralized place that shows the difference between all the intel processors? Like I see the i5-2500 and i5-760 are the same price, but the 2500 seems to outperform the other on all benchmarks.

No USB 3.0, though. Really, an i5-2400 with any motherboard should fit the $300 requirement, and would be fine for streaming+SC2.

EDIT: Bah, deconduo beat me to it >.<

In the next few months, though, AMD is coming out with their Bulldozer processors. It's rumored that they can compete with Intel CPUs; however, even if they don't, they're bound to drive down prices of some processors.

http://www.ncixus.com/products/59163/GA-H67MA-D2H-B3/Gigabyte/

Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 1GB - $244 (in practice, negligibly worse than the 2GB variant)
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=58501&promoid=1317

Mushkin 2 x 4GB DDR3 RAM - $81
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=55544&promoid=1317

Cooler Master HAF 912 - $54
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=55583&promoid=1317

Seasonic S12II Bronze 620W - $66 (was cheaper than 520W variant)
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=52174&promoid=1317

Antec High Current Gamer 400W and Neo Eco 450C are pretty much the same design as the S12II Bronze but are just the lower-wattage variants, but they weren't much cheaper. You don't need the extra capacity, but this was just a good deal in general.

A cheaper HDD alternative that's mostly as good is

Western Digital Caviar Blue - $41
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=58402&promoid=1317

You may want to get an SSD to boost overall system performance through better access times, at least for whatever you store on it (OS, applications, whatever else will fit). Some options:

OCZ Vertex 2 50GB - $91
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=51945&promoid=1317

Corsair Force 80GB - $168
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=59021&promoid=1317

Intel 320 120GB - $228
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=60546&promoid=1317

All are decent for the price. The Intel one should have the highest reliability, if you're concerned about that and all the anecdotal evidence around.

If you'd like a quieter case that's a little nicer than the HAF 912, you can try the NZXT H2. There's a small combo with the i5-2500 and the H2 it looks like:
http://www.ncixus.com/products/60210/H2 BLACK/NZXT/

Thanks alot I really appreciate all the help guys.
The ruminations are mine, let the world be yours.

My Bulldozer prediction--feel free to disagree a lot:
1) Octo-core (4 modules) beats or ties Core i7-990x in multi-threaded performance, but for much lower cost
2) Hex-core (3 modules) is close to Core i7-2600(k) in multi-threaded performance, but for lower cost
3) Quad-core (2 modules) is cheaper than i5-2500k by a decent bit and can also be overclocked, unlike Intel's cheaper CPUs
4) As an overgeneralization, instructions per clock is not better than Sandy Bridge, since that wasn't the emphasis in the design (many small and cheap to produce cores is)

So for somebody not overclocking at a CPU+motherboard budget of $300, I don't think an i5-2400 + mobo will be beat, or at least not beat badly. Maybe you'll be able to get a hex-core Bulldozer CPU for that kind of money? I don't think you'd get buyer's remorse over having an i5-2400 though.

It's probably worth not worth waiting. edit: important typo lol

The only difference is clock speed and turbo-boosted clock speed.

Alrighty, thanks for the info. I'm not in too much of a rush to upgrade, so I'll just wait until the new AMD cpus come out and check back then.

Going from a core i5 760 to either Sandybridge or Bulldozer is more of a side-grade than an actual upgrade.
