Basically, is Haswell worth it for a PC i want to last 5 years? Is Ivy still also worth it? Thanks all.

Also get an i5, it's the same as i7 except no hyper-threading and 2MB less L2 Cache.

Since im probably never going to have another 2000$ to spend on a PC, im just going to spend the extra 100$ for the i7, ill gamble and hope it works out in the future.

Seems fairly close http://www.amazon.com/Gateway-DX4860-UR308-Desktop-Black/dp/B009B8EBUC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1374263258&sr=1-1&keywords=desktop i3 Should I just go with that? Hi TL. I need to build another computer tower for work, mainly used to play music & later videos. Budget is around $400-$500 for parts. Component wise I'd really like to have at least 1tb storage, usb 3.0 front ports, 8gb of ram, prefer intel i series over amd but that's not a deal breaker. Onboard graphics should be ok as long as I can upgrade later. Also is it still worth it for me to build my own or should I be able to find similarly priced manufactured desktops (esp since I will probably need a buy windows)? Thanks in advance! What is your budget? - prefer $400-$500 for parts, some wiggle room What is your resolution? - prefer 1920 by 1080, but not too important What are you using it for? - no gaming, maybe some photoshop work, mainly playing music and mixing videos What is your upgrade cycle? - 2+ years When do you plan on building it? - by the end of July Do you plan on overclocking? - no Do you need an Operating System? - yes, but will be bought outside of stated budget Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? - no Where are you buying your parts from? - newegg.com, amazon preferred New build I'm compiling, so far got everything besides usb 3.0 motherboard and a PSU that can later support addition video + sound card: + Show Spoiler + Case $45 ($30 AR) - RAIDMAX Blade ATX-298WY Mid tower Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156262 Look is a bit too much, but it's $35 AR, has usb 3.0 and good reviews (+ there's another 15% off coupon that might work) OEM 1TB HD + DVD Burner Combo $77 - WD Blue 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" + Asus drw http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1385081 Processor $125 - Intel Core i3-2120 Dual-Core Processor 3.3 GHz 3 MB Cache LGA 1155 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115077 RAM $70 - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148540 Single 8gb Stick in case they want to upgrade to 16gb later $317 so far ($302 after rebate) Still need mobo and psu Why are you buying a core i3 2120 rather than a core i3 3220 when the price difference is only $5? Get a core i3 3220 & B75 combo for $190: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1360813 Seems that core i3 pricing went up on Newegg. But a FX6300 is less expensive and may be better than the i3 if your tasks are well threaded. Get the Fractal Design Core 1000 for $34 with promo code: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352032 For power supply, just get a CX430 for ~$45. That HP does not have front usb3.0 which you said you wanted. And you're typically going to have to replace the power supply on prebuilts if you want to add an graphics card.

At any given clock speed Haswell will be faster than Ivy/Sandy. The only difference is that Ivy/Sandy can OC higher with the right equipment Actually, i'd say sandy especially (and a tiny bit ivy) can oc higher if you have the WRONG equipment, or not as good knowledge/understanding You can get i7 if hyperthreading is worth the cost for the performance gains (usually ~20% faster in stuff that loads 8+ threads and scales well like video encoding) but it's use is very little. A game that benefits in terms of performance at all with hyperthreading is considered special, and other stuff will run so fast with a current CPU that you often dont mind that video encode taking 1 minute and 12 seconds instead of 1 minute, but if you use stuff often that scales in terms of performance with it then you might want it. If you're not overclocking though, i'd always take that before i7 unless you don't want to get into it at all, cause 25% better performance everywhere is a lot better than 20% extra in a niche and identical in most places

Also, looking at RAM for my build, 2133 seems overkill to me, will 1600 satisfy my Haswell? Or is the higher frequency going to boost performance by alot.

I have my silver arrow now, mounted ok with paste (repasted a few times; it's not horribly wrong) ~28c ambients, 3.4ghz, 1vcore manual, turbo disabled. Vcore changes in CPU-Z under load, but i set what i set and changes are either mistakes in software or changes of the behavior of the integrated voltage regulator ![]() Max temp after Cinebench for 2 runs, 50c. 22c above ambient ![]() Linpack with avx2 for 5 minutes - max temp 74c, 46c above ambient ![]() Linpack with avx2 for 5 minutes on STOCK SETTINGS, stock volts (1.127vcore), stock clocks + turbo - max temp 86c (58c above ambient) I won't order anybody to do anything, but there's no way i would base an overclock on these temps when all of the games and video encoders i use have temps matching or being below cinebench, and synthetic avx2 work does this kind of shit with good airflow on a silver arrow. Nobody can overclock on those temps, good thing they don't show up aside from niche stress testing programs This is good mount on silver arrow with 2xty-147's at max RPM, a 170mm exhaust mounted next to it at max speed, a 120mm exhaust and two 120mm intakes with GPU sleeping, 86c on stock settings.

Edit: also, no HD4000 is not really worth if over HD2500, even for the price. If you're gonna grab a K, get a Z77, even if you ever might want to even maybe overclock, which can give you 10-30% performance boosts in five minutes, sometimes without even changing stock voltage. 30% performance gains means a CPU that is relevant for an additional two years, btw. Keep that in mind.
