Also, because I don't need to OC, I don't need Z series motherboard right? Yeah, no need for Z. Though at around $85, you could pick up an AsRock Z75 Pro3 if you wanted. Without any real hassle, you could boot into UEFI (BIOS) once and set multipliers 4 higher for a free 400 MHz overclock. Don't even need to test it or change other settings, or use a better cooler; almost guaranteed it will just work... though testing it would still be recommended.
It seems like it'd be a shame to get last-gen 40 nm graphics, so even though it may be a little much, you could get an HD 7750 for $90: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161403
Now the power supply is looking way overpowered, but oh well. $60 for high quality. What can you say?

That's a H77, MSI is just being stupid with the Z prefix.
You can get a H61 board that supports Ivybridge, something like this ASUS H61M-A/USB3 for $60: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131963
You can drop down to a Radeon HD7770 for $110: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202011 or the 7750 as suggested by Myrmidon. Both still way too powerful for League of Legends. You can probably run that game on the integrated graphics of the core i5 3550.
Some less expensive case options would include but not limited to the Fractal Design Core 1000, NZXT Source 210, and Corsair Carbide 200R.

1) I have an AMD Phenom II x4 965 @ 3.4GHz and a 768MB Geforce GTX 460. For SC2, running ultra or high, could I benefit from a video card upgrade? I'm assuming the answer is no because of CPU limitations. 2) If a video card could help, what's the best nvidia card for SC2 for around $200 or less that would make a significant difference?
|
Afaik a 460 comes so close to maxing sc2 that it wouldn't be worth spending a hundred to upgrade. You could put the money to a CPU upgrade though, which would be very beneficial.
|
He might as well get a new mobo+cpu combo from microcenter or newegg.

460 destroys sc2. I was CPU bound in max 1v1 or any high supply 2v2 with a better cpu, and a gtx260 which is leagues below in terms of performance

+ Show Spoiler [Want a list of parts/Build?] +Important questions you should ask yourself What is your budget?
around 1k, I'm allowed to go a bit over or a bit under, but since this is a college computer, and I got some $$ for highschool graduation, I thought this + clothes that fit me + a guitar for guitar class + possibly a longboard later on would be a good idea. What is your resolution?
I play on 1280x1024. I'm looking to do something a higher res possibly like 1900-x1200- I forget the exact dimmensions. What are you using it for?
I'm going to be using this for school work, Maya 3-d, LOTS of writing, scheduling and such to keep my life in line, and of course gaming and hopefully streaming.
What is your upgrade cycle?
My upgrade cycle is going to be rather long, I'm hoping to not have to upgrade anything for 3-4 years considering I'd rather upgrade if/when I enter grad school. When do you plan on building it?
Pretty much ASAP, I'll be doing this is a couple weeks, I wanted to start 4 weeks ago, but whatever.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I'm not going to bother with overclocking, I don't see any real reason it would help me in my situation, and especially due to the extra-noise/cooling needed. Do you need an Operating System? I'll need to buy an OS. I'm looking at windows instead of Linux considering I've never used Linux and the only one that is user friendly is supposedly Ubuntu. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I don't know what this question means, but if it means the 2 monitor set up, I was thinking about it, but I don't actually see a huge need for it other than maybe streaming, and if I did that, I'd have to set it up much later considering it would eat pretty hard into my budget I think. Where are you buying your parts from?
I have very few places in my town I can go considering most places offer PC repair rather than part selling. I guess I'll have to use Newegg for a lot of it, I've heard bad things about TigerDirect and Ebay, so I'm guessing for facilitation purposes, Newegg is the way to go.
PLS HELP ME. I'M SORRY I'M SO NOOB.

SLI or crossfire means 2 GPUs i assume you mean 1920x1080?

I guess if I can get the computer of my dreams and that there isn't a real reason not to, but it isn't my #1 priority nor do I want it taking away from my budget if I can't already get a better experience by saving that money.

How do you calculate how much power supply you need? Is it higher quality because it is rated 80+Gold?
|
You add up the power consumption of the CPU and GPU (only two components that matter since they use the most, the rest of the components are in single digits or low double digits for the most part) then add in a little extra since you don't want to be running the power supply at 100% (even though you can do that without worry). A GTX 650 Ti is ~100w and Core i5 is ~50w, both under full load (which never happens with gaming).
A power supply is high quality because of its design and components used, not due to the level of 80PLUS certification. For example, the Capstone which is Gold rated is better than a lot of the lower-end Platinum units and some of the older units that are no longer in production like the Corsair CX400 which just have the regular 80PLUS certification are better than lots of Bronze rated units.

I think stock i5 would be a bit more than 50w, considering the tdp is 84w and sin measured 83w @1.02vcore 4ghz (not sure if this was i5 or i7 though), in my experience stock will hold turbos of 3.7ghz (4 core load) or 3.9ghz (1 core load) and apply a lot more voltage than that, most stock VID's are around 1.1 - 1.15vcore and i'm not sure if that goes up with turbo? Your point stands though
|
The TDP is for the entire package, not just the CPU. Sin used an i7 and his numbers are in line with everyone elses.

is it possible to build a computer that can play on ultra settings with a steady frame rate on a 730$ budget? (already have os, dvd and dvd drive thingy)

Depends what you mean by steady framerate, but sure
Do you have a monitor?
