@Johnnycashew:
If you chose the CNPS14x, I've seen it at http://us.ncix.com for $40.
I feel bad about the older CPU instead of the 4670k, but I don't know if it's worth it for $40. I would probably try very hard to hunt for some kind of deal with Z87.
You can also save money on the case, choose a much cheaper one, but I don't know what to suggest.

Get a Samsung 840 instead of the 840 Pro unless you care about the significantly better sequential writes or the two extra years of warranty that the Pro has.

I would like to assume that your optical(s) are still in tact, as well as your other peripherals, as that could effect the choices to be made. I'm not great at computers but this would be my idea for a system assuming only the CPU was fried: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1al16
You can just keygen an OS and save yourself 100$, and if your case is reusable you can save more money, but like I said I'm no expert.
I'm sure I'll get some kind of wall of text telling me how wrong I am and how I made some terrible choices, but hey I have the disclaimer.
|
Keygenned OS generally means you do not have access to any kind of windows updates which is a pretty big deal.

I keygenned my OS cause it wouldn't let me activate with new motherboard and got all updates fine

How did you pass activation?

Guys, I am gonna get a new rig... it just happened that my dad wants a "new rig" too and he is willing to take mine.... so here we go.
I have assembled computers before, but I am barely literate in computer hardware otherwise. I only have a vague idea of what I want, but I do have a pretty generous budget. I will most likely buy the parts from NCIX.
What is your budget?
1500ish CAD.
What is your resolution?
1080p is probably fine. I am not sure about something that is even higher.
What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming. Might use it for some streaming but I don't plan to go beyond 720p for streaming. Preferably I want to be able to play at 60FPS at max setting for the recent games for the next a couple of years (some MMO games... I don't care about SC2).
What is your upgrade cycle?
Probably 3-5 years.
When do you plan on building it?
Within a month... unless there is something coming up soon (but beyond a month), in which case I am willing to wait a bit.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I am guessing yes... with my budget I can definitely get the components that will allow me to overclock somewhat. I have never done it before and it'll be fun!
Do you need an Operating System?
No, I will be moving my older OS while my dad installs his on my old rig.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Probably no.
Where are you buying your parts from?
NCIX or newegg.ca. I strongly prefer NCIX.
Note: I don't need HDD nor monitor. I do want a SSD for the OS and stuff. I also do not need accessories such as mouse, keyboard, etc.

NCIX has weekly sales every Wednesday and other retailers have sales as well so you should narrow down your purchase date and then come back to ask. Otherwise you're going to end up getting a configuration which may be good this week but may be $200 more expensive in the following weeks due to pricing changes or may not be the best choices anymore because other components went on sale.

Well it's Wednesday now... I'll take a look and do some homework myself, I guess.

The new sale starts at 6pm pst.

I got everything last week and put it all together this week, thanks to everyone in this thread that helped. There's a couple of pics and a little more info in this link http://pcpartpicker.com/b/CNi

I'm idling at about 49°C in BIOS with the stock heatsink. Is that too high?
|
When the CPU runs at reduced speed at idle, that's actually done by Windows, not something the CPU or board decides to do. In the BIOS, if it behaves a bit like my Ivy Bridge, it will stay at full speed and high voltage. I could imagine those 49 C being normal for the stock cooler with the top speed CPU, but you should see lower temperature when it's clocked down in Windows at idle.

Ah yes the clock rate is 3.5ghz in BIOS, which is full speed. When I get home I'll test the idle and load speeds with Windows running. Thanks!

Hey, on partpicker, you write something about RAID and IDE options in the BIOS. Where you've set it to "IDE", there should be "AHCI" available. IDE is a legacy option as Windows XP can't use AHCI, but IDE is missing commands like "trim". Windows uses that to tell the SSD what blocks are empty. That's important for the SSD. It needs that to keep its speed up over time.
If you installed that "Samsung Magician" software, it will have a warning if AHCI is off. There's also a way to check if AHCI is on at a command prompt window.
If you installed Windows with AHCI off, you should google for how to prepare Windows to work with a change to it (it requires a setting in the registry), then switch from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS.

AHCI is off and I installed Samsung Magician, I don't remember seeing a warning in it though. According to their manual, that particular mobo doesn't support AHCI/RAID, or doesn't after a certain update. Here's a link to the manual http://us.msi.com/product/mb/B85M-P33.html#/?div=Manual
If I go in and change the registry and stuff to get AHCI to work, will it work since the manufacturer says the mobo doesn't support RAID?
|
From what I can find, it seems if you turn on Intel's RAID, you also automatically turn on AHCI, but AHCI vs. IDE is still a separate issue if RAID is off.

ok so a modular psu is just a waste of money then. a cx500 80+ bronze will suffice for single gpu & haswell oc?

What is your budget? 1000~ i assume ill have to dish out another few hundred 1300 is my limit
What is your resolution? 1920 X 1080
What are you using it for? SC2>, and maybe some bf4 when it comes out. Edit: lots of movies too, not sure if that factors into anything. (thats why i put that sound card on my list, let me know if that is a good choice or not)
What is your upgrade cycle? this is my first build so i imagine ill be good for some time. Ill upgrade next time there is a big jump in cpu performance.
When do you plan on building it? when ever im 100% happy with all the parts
Do you plan on overclocking? i think in time yes this will be something i want to do.
Do you need an Operating System? yes
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? yes, (i have little to no understanding on modern gpu's and their capabilities) Where are you buying your parts from? i have a microcenter near me, as well as new egg possibly.
let me know what you guys think. I really want to be able to run sc2 as max as possible and really make use of the new physics in HOTS Completely forgot to add the pcpartpicker url http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1a2TQ Just wanted to chime in that the DSX doesn't have a headphone amp, it's designed for surround sound systems.
With sound cards, if you're not big into audio and with headphones < $100 I'd see if the onboard sounds 'fine' to you, chances are a soundcard won't make much difference if it already sounds good to you.
