LGA 1366 systems (and the Xeon equivalent, whatever that is) are the only ones that have a triple channel memory architecture. Most everything currently on the market uses dual channel, unless you're talking about Atom or other low-power architectures. You need 2 (or 4) sticks of RAM on a dual channel system to use dual channel mode. In theory, running 3 (or 6) RAM modules in a triple channel system would give you 50% more memory bandwidth than a dual channel system has...as the name implies. In practice, the difference is mostly negligible for real-world applications, unless they are memory benchmarks or otherwise involve the transfer of exorbitant amounts of data in and out of RAM nonstop. As you could see in the previously-linked benchmarks, the i7-950's triple channel memory (not to mention hyperthreading on top of that) wasn't enough to compensate for any other advantage the i5-2500 had. The max memory supported is just saying that with 4 slots, you can get to a max of 32GB only if you have four 8GB modules

Brand is pretty inconsequential since they source their RAM from the same people (Samsung, Hynix)...only thing you're paying for is aftermarket service really.

You even included the latest GTX 560 Ti on there. lolz I change my build so much, but it's because I'm still waiting to get paid in February and my tax refund should be deposited in my account the first week of February too. I want to be able to play any PC game that is out now or in the future for the next several years so I went "balls to the wall" with my desktop setup. ( Newegg build) Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 CPU: i5 2500k fan: Noctua NH-D14 PSU: 750w Corsair TX Mobo: Asus Pro (God are they having problems right now, but I'm sure I can fix the issues) RAM: G skill 2x2 GB DDR3 1600 for $47 SSD: Intel's 120 GB x25 drive OS: Win 7 (-5 dollars because of combo with PSU) Keyboard: Rosewill's mechanical RK-9000 DVD: generic drive Monitor: 23.6" Asus GPU: last but not least... SLI GTX 560s Hellz yeah! I can't wait. I'm coming from a dual core laptop (1.6 GHZ) w/ shitty Intel Integrated Graphics, to a complete BEAST of a machine. Can it play Crysis? FUCK YEAH! Can it play Metro2033? FUCK YEAH! /nerd excitement! I might stream some SC2 games on Ultra quality with the 560 SLI.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=146 If you want to overclock the CPU, you'll need a i5-2500k and LGA 1155 P67 chipset motherboard. Otherwise, another i5-2x00 would be cheaper, and you could get a cheaper LGA 1155 H67 chipset motherboard. Combining CPU and motherboard costs, the new i5-2x00 should be a little bit cheaper than the Phenom II X6. 8GB of RAM is fine, but what are you using it for? (Unless you know why, you might as well just get 2 sticks of 2GB for now.)

Core i5-2400 + Intel H67 motherboard + free Civ5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.575901 Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125363 + Show Spoiler [alternative] + Sapphire HD 6850 (cheaper and less powerful, but still enough to run SC2 on ultra at your resolution) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908 EVGA GTX 570 (more powerful, hotter, more expensive) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130593 Mushkin 2 x 2GB DDR3 RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146748 + Show Spoiler [alternative] + You probably don't need 8GB, but RAM is currently pretty cheap. More RAM wouldn't hurt, though practically, it may well not do anything for you either. RAM over 4GB these days will mostly benefit people working on large CAD or A/V editing, or things like that (not gamers). G.Skill 2 x 4GB DDR3 RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231422 Samsung Spinpoint F3 1GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 + Show Spoiler [maybe add an SSD] + OCZ Vertex 2 60GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227550 Depending on how you use your comnputer, your priorities, etc., an SSD may or may not be worth it. It certainly won't boost in-game performance, though you can expect much faster access to all data on the drive than for a mechanical hard drive. Budget: $1250-1500 (Computer, OS, + Monitor, no peripherals) Resolution:1920x1080 Use: Gaming, gaming and maybe other stuff Upgrade Cycle: Depends on what games come out in the future that he needs new hardware for Build Time: As I said, he is not sure if he is even getting a desktop Overclocking: Most likely, including flashing a 6950 to a 6970 SLI / Crossfire: Would prefer to stay away from it, better to get a similar single card, maybe flash a 6950. Where am I buying it from: Newegg if he does do it himself. We think that a 2500k and a Radeon 6900 series would be perfect for the budget, but we just want to confirm. EDIT: Oh yeah, he would prefer an asus p8p67 (standard or pro) because of the dfi bios and bluetooth.
