Hey guys, I've been looking into getting a new computer and noticed TL has a great advice thread here. I am a long time lurker here, and play a lot of SC2.
What is your budget? €1400-€1800
What is your resolution?
1920 x 1080
What are you using it for?
A multitude of things; gaming(mainly SC2 but occasionally play various other steam games)/programming/some photoshop and video manipulation I also wish to be able to stream in HD(720p atleast).
What is your upgrade cycle?
3 years +
When do you plan on building it?
Very soon, within this month.
Do you plan on overclocking?
Not sure, if advisable to do so with my current needs/desires then yes.
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes, Windows 7
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Not sure? Do I need a second graphics card for a dual monitor setup?
Where are you buying your parts from?
http://www.elara.ie http://www.komplett.ie
I am from Ireland and these sites would be more convenient for me.
Extra Details HDD: 1TB is plenty of space SSD: As OS bootup drive(60GB should be fine) Dual Monitor setup(Was thinking about using http://www.elara.ie/results.aspx?productcode=MMEM352052)
I'm not the most experienced when it comes to computer builds, please help! Thanks!

Those options were the best value I could find. I havn't considered getting anything lower than those cards or if I should. I'd be willing to spend up to $150 CAD since anything more probably isn't worth it on such a dated pc. I am not too experienced with computers, therefore I'm not sure on this decision. Any advice/info would be great. Thanks!
I just had a similar thing happen. My 8800 GTS just died after about 5 years. I ended up with a gtx 560 2GB model for about $160 on newegg which should arrive today. What are people's thoughts on that card compared to others in the 150-200 range? I have a 1920x1080 monitor and game a lot, but mostly games with lower graphics requirements (SC2, D3, EVE, TF2).

Maybe not the right thread... but I'm looking for two things (for this new School year!)
A laptop : Mainly for taking notes, writing stuff + watching stuff on Youtube. So the keyboard has to be useful, and the screen decent. Not too heavy, not too expensive (doesn't have to have high end graphics)
And I also need an external HD, doesn't have to be handy (can be a big box, I don't care) I've seen some External HD wireless, anyone tried any of these? If they do work, they could be interesting!! I'm looking for something around 1tb or more. Ideally, something reliable

What is not too expensive? To me, not too expensive is $1,000 but for you, it's probably something completely different.

Well, its only to take note and to watch video. 1000 is what I paid for a laptop that can run games.

Holy crap, a Komplett I can read! Wonders will never cease! Here's a recommendation. For two parts (cpu cooler & case) I went to amazon.co.uk, assuming you could access that, since selection wasn't the best on the two websites you posted.
Core components: 450 euro -CPU: i5-3570k (233) You'll want to overclock to play SC2 with no slowdowns despite streaming pretty heavily. If you plan to be more than a casual streamer, you might also considering ponying up 100 more euros for an i7-3770k. The hyperthreading (only difference between i5 & i7) will help streaming a little, but won't do anything else for you. -Motherboard: Gigabyte z77-ds3h (110) A basic, quality overclocking board. Nothing fancy, like being able to run 2 video cards, but everything you need for a one-video-card system. -CPU Cooler: HR-02 Macho (60) This turned out more expensive than I expected. Usually the HR-02 Macho is a cheap, quality, quiet, euro cooler. Not as much on the isles I guess. Ireland-store replacements: the Noctua NH-D14 for top-end & quiet, the Coolermaster 212 Evo for satisfactory performance and extra money left over for beer. -RAM: Corsair 2x4gb 1600mhz (47) It's RAM. http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/product/intel_socket_1155/80005583/intel_core_i5_3570k_3_2ghz_6mb_s1155/details.aspx http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/product/intel_socket_1155/20158962/gigabyte_ga_z77_ds3h_socket_1155_atx/details.aspx http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-HR-02-Macho-CPU-Cooler/dp/B005ERSN7G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347033987&sr=8-1 http://www.elara.ie/productdetail.aspx?productcode=ECE2071001
Graphics Card: 330 euro -Sapphire 7950. You have a big budget, but don't need that much GPU power (not a giant resolution, SC2 can be run on a GPU drawn on a paper napkin, streaming takes zero GPU power), so be aware that a good portion of this card's strength (and cost) is wasted except when playing non-SC2 games. Also, for your resolution, the 660ti is a reasonable competitor. However, the 7950 can be overclocked fairly easily should you wish to do so, and that tipped the recommendation. Of course, you could also go with a cheaper card like a 7850 or even less, depending on how much you want to spend on upping graphics quality in non-SC2 games. Edit: Yes, you can run multiple monitors off one video card. http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/product/ati__amd/20161207/sapphire_radeon_hd7950_oc_950mhz_3gb_pci_e/details.aspx
Supporting Components: 439 euro -Fractal Design R3 (89) Relatively quiet, simple case, higher quality than a budget case. Not a wind machine, but you don't need super cooling with your one-graphics-card setup. From amazon. Ireland-store replacement: Corsair 550d (35 more euro). -Antec High Curent Gamer 520 (71) Overkill wattage, quality power. Not the cheapest, but not the best selection of PSUs on the Ireland sites. -Intel 330 180gb SSD (137) Significantly larger than the boot-SSD you were considering. But you have the budget, & the 180gb Intel has a good $-per-gigabyte price. Why not put ALL your applications on an SSD? -Seagate 2tb 7200rpm HDD (115) Oodles of space for media storage. The Hitachi 1TB is 30 euros less at Elara if you don't want that much space. -Sony DVD-burner (20) -SATA cable (7) If you have an extra, you can do without. (Motherboard comes with 2, HDD+SSD+DVD-burner =3) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fractal-Design-Define-Series-Case/dp/B004006BKY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1347034139&sr=8-3 http://www.elara.ie/productdetail.aspx?productcode=ECE2106976 http://www.elara.ie/productdetail.aspx?productcode=ECE2408932 http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/product/intern_3_5_/20098836/seagate_2tb_sata_600_7200rpm_64mb/details.aspx http://www.elara.ie/productdetail.aspx?productcode=MMEW520178 http://www.elara.ie/productdetail.aspx?productcode=MMEV931032
Windows 7: 100 euros http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/product/operating_systems/20078630/microsoft_windows_7_home_premium_sp1_64_bit_oem_uk/details.aspx
Rough total for recommended tower components + Windows = 1319 euros (including tax, but not shipping) Note peripherals are not included, nor is a monitor. If you haven't purchased a monitor yet, and are considering going to the top end of your budget, you might consider going getting a 27" 2560x1440 monitor. (~600 euros for a Samsung S27A850D or Dell 27" ultrasharp, both at komplett). Note I'm pretty sure those two monitors have a matte (anti-glare) coating. For glossy (sharper-looking, but more glare), Amazon.co.uk has a DGM IPS-2701WPH for about 470 euro. There might be another Ireland-based cheaper glossy 27" somewhere if another store is carrying that DGM or maybe one of the Hazro monitors. If your 1400-1800euros was meant for the tower only, you should be easily able to fit one of those luxury screens in. If not, perhaps a basic 1920x1080 IPS monitor instead.
If you go for the larger 2560x1440 monitor, stick with the 7950 and don't consider a 660ti.
If you need peripherals as well, I recommend cheap speakers, a cheap keyboard, and a Mionix Naos 3200 mouse.

I would get a macbook air or something similar for those needs.

Wow thanks for the reply, I will look into this setup. However, what alternate option for a motherboard is there on komplett/elara just so I could have the option of having more than one card?
Also, I noted that I was looking into a dual monitor set up at 1920x1080 , and linked a monitor. Any thoughts on this ?
Other peripherals are not needed(Keyboard/mouse/audio inputs) but thanks for the suggestions! Thanks!
Edit: Sorry I just realised that the link doesn't appear to work which is quite confusing. It is a 23" monitor (BENQ G2320HDBL on Elara.ie)
|
As for monitors, I generally reference the Team Liquid Monitor Thread for detailed info. The BenQ you linked doesn't look great, in large part because I don't recognize it from WomWomWom's excellent thread, and like many manufactuers, BenQ has hits and misses.
You don't want to game on dual-monitors. The bezels will be right in the middle of the screen. So a dual-monitor setup is gaming on one, desktop & background stuff on the other. The non-gaming monitor is easy as pie to run, so you can pretty much assume it will take zero extra GPU power. As for running more than one monitor off a single graphics card, I referenced that in the post above.
For SLI/Crossfire (2 video cards), you'll need a mobo that's SLI/Crossfire compatible. For Gigabyte that means the z77-ud3h or -ud5h, if I remember correctly. I think the Asrock z77 extreme4 might be another option. You'd also want a quality 650w power supply too. But it seems a little silly to spend extra unless you really think you'd want spend another 350euros on a second video card within the year. Doesn't make much sense unless you're gaming on multiple monitors (not gaming on 1 with something else on the second).
|
Ah I see, I'll check out the thread. Yes that's what I meant, gaming on one with desktop on the other... More than likely do not need a second GPU then, thanks!

would having a hyper212 plus fit in a matx motherboard with a msi 7870 hawk edition? here is my set up:
https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=20616646
can anyone recommend me for a good matx/atx motherboard for my needs? or is the asrock h77 pro4/MVP sufficient? most of the h77 mobos i see on newegg have relatively bad reviews... i wouldn't mind paying 20 bucks more for a low end z77 mobo, even though i will not be overclocking, if that is a good idea
thanks(:

An aftermarket heatsink is not needed if you are not overclocking.

You don't need cable ties, you PSU will come with more than you can use. Also I don't understand why you aren't spending an extra $30 for a Z77 motherboard and 3570K considering how much you are spending. Also you shouldn't worry about motherboard reliability as even the cheapest brands (biostar ecs) are pretty reliable.
