Well, its only to take note and to watch video. 1000 is what I paid for a laptop that can run games.

Make a new account and take advantage of the N&N Gold program.

For around $800, you can get a X230 with the Premium HD IPS display upgrade or a T430s with the 1600x900 display upgrade. These systems are built extremely well, have good battery life, and have some of the best keyboards in the business.

any comments? i'm checking out in 3-4 comments, and currently my only concerns is the reliability of the motherboard.

also, i'm living in a college dorm that isn't resourceful, so i will add a philips screwdriver and an antistatic wristband to my cart. is there anything else i should consider? (cable ties?)

You don't need cable ties, you PSU will come with more than you can use. Also I don't understand why you aren't spending an extra $30 for a Z77 motherboard and 3570K considering how much you are spending. Also you shouldn't worry about motherboard reliability as even the cheapest brands (biostar ecs) are pretty reliable.

Yeah, $1150 with a cpu cooler (only required for overclocking btw bro), but also with a h77 + non-k? Uhhhh....

Uh, it's quieter under load with usual PWM-controlled temperature-regulated CPU fan speed, but that doesn't make any sense with an Antec 900 and the MSI Hawk 7870 (at least by these results).

Will a 450w psupply be able to run everything? Because the 3570k and a 7850 withh an ssd and hdd seems like it would take more than 450

A Capstone 450 provides plenty of headroom for a measly 3570k and 7850.

Desktop is dying as we speak......

Ideally the machine I buy will be able to stream PoE/D3 and possibly Titan if Blizzard doesn't fubar that game. I'd like it to last a good while and keep in mind that I'm not an upgrader. I buy a machine and ride it til it dies.....

I don't need a monitor/speakers/keyboard/mouse, so just the best tower I can get for no more than $1200. The less expensive the better, but I still want something that will last. So if it has to be pushing $1200, go ahead and suggest away. However, if you can suggest a machine that will allow me to stream and play Path of Exile/Diablo 3/Titan and keep the price down please do so.

Not looking to overclock or do 2 monitors. I do need an operating system.

Lastly, I'm looking to buy within the next 7 days unless a better deal will be available sometime in September. I want the machine sooner than later.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey guys, a year or two ago i posted in here asking for a good computer build for 500$ and you guys were incredibly helpful. My friend is hoping to build a cpu costing $600-700 dollars to mostly play guild wars 2 on. He wants to be sure that he wont have a massive frame drop in huge battles in World vs. World fights. If someone here would be nice enough to list good compatible parts in that price range for putting together a CPU i would be very very happy.

Also, a second question : I'm currently using an NVIDIA GTS 250 with a AMD II X3 440 processor, and i've been getting a massive frame drop (down to 8-12 fps) in giant battles in guild wars 2. I'm looking to drop $50-90 in order to improve this, what would be the best way to go about this considering my current set-up?

Thanks massively to anyone who is willing to help on either of these

To your Question: an intel G620+H61 motherboard (assuming your ram currently is DDR3) is about $100 or a Phenom X II 965 (I'm not 100% sure bout the name / if your motherboard supports it) for around the same price is the only real upgrade you can do in a 'cheap' price range (in your situation).

I'm assuming newegg and your friend doesn't need a monitor/keyboard/mouse:

i3-3220 $129.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116775

ASRock H77M & 8GB DDR3-1600 1.5v RAM $102.98

Sapphire HD6870 $169.99 ($10 Mail in rebate) Free Dirt3 Coupon

OCZ Agility 4 64GB SATA III SSD $64.99 ($10 Mail in rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227810

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

Fractal Core 1000 mATX case $39.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352009

Rosewill Capstone 450M $69.99 ($55.99 with promo code EMCNANC35, ends 9/13)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182261

DVD Burner $16.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151244

Total: $640.91 AMIR

There are some things you could do to cut cost such as Dropping the 64GB SSD, Downgrading the GPU to a HD6850/7770.

With just a 550 Ti, that is really overpriced to me.

Have you tried to price it out at Newegg? I would to determine what you are paying them to put it together for you. Putting a system together for the first time is not that hard and there are a lot of good guides on the internet.

It looks like a whole lot of meh. If you have two hands & you can read, you can do better for less.

As has been noted, you probably can't get a significant upgrade for that amount of money. You might want to try lowering graphics settings (if they're at lowest already, raise them a bit) to see if that changes the frame drop. If lowering the graphics settings improves the situation, or if raising them makes the situation significantly worse (the massive fame drop in the giant battles, not anything else), then a better video card is probably the way to go.

More likely, however, is that your CPU isn't up to snuff. I've heard that Guild Wars 2 is a fairly CPU intense game. Unfortunately, unless you can overclock your processor, there's not much way to fix that without spending more, preferably somewhere in the realm of $250 to get a proper quad-core. Although $150ish would likely get you the new ivy bridge pentium.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of building a comp but I haven't built one for awhile. I'm out of the loop for what's good and what's not but I have a good idea of what I want. Here it is:

What is your budget?
$500-600 but if there's something that has a lot of bang for it's buck I would consider paying more maybe up to $800.

What is your resolution?
1600x900

What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming (SC2, D3, WoW, HoN)
Potentially some streaming (720p+) and photoshop usage

What is your upgrade cycle?
~3 years

When do you plan on building it?
Very soon. Now if I could get all the parts that I know are reliable and fit the bill.

Do you plan on overclocking?
Nope.

Do you need an Operating System?
Nope.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I could go either way on this one. I'm sure I won't really find a reason to need to get a second GPU in the next 3 years but if the price difference between motherboards that do and don't support SLI/Crossfire isn't much I would just get the one that could so that I won't need to get a new motherboard down the road.

Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg, NCIX, TigerDirect

I've also come up with a list of core parts that I put together but I'm not too sure about them so if you guys wouldn't mind taking a look and suggesting better parts I'd appreciate that:

Power Supply: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276574&sku=ULT-LSP550

GPU: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=698000&sku=E145-0524

HDD: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7281716&sku=TSD-500AAKX

Memory: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7162756&sku=K24-9918

Motherboard: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=693837&sku=M452-6113

CPU: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7073161&sku=I69-2500K

I'm considering these as well:

Memory: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57953&promoid=1219

Motherboard + CPU: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=71601&promoid=1219

HDD: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57878&promoid=1219

I would probably have to buy a case and the peripheral drives (i.e. CD, ethernet) but I think I may have some peripherals lying around. Also, I take it it's better to ship from one place so that I don't have to pay shipping and handling from two shops?

Power supply is a poor model, overpriced. You don't need anything close to 550W, which would be a good thing if you were to actually use something that bad, but something else is just more appropriate.

The GPU is one of the lowest-end models currently sold, more of a media / laptop-level card than anything intended for gaming. It's just barely better than the integrated graphics in the CPU.

The memory is way overpriced.

The motherboard is not compatible with the CPU, which is a last-generation model anyway.

Hold on a second, and we can see about starting off with a real build.

Make sure that your old optical drive uses a SATA connection. If it doesn't, you'll need a new one for around $15.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of building a comp but I haven't built one for awhile. I'm out of the loop for what's good and what's not but I have a good idea of what I want. Here it is:

What is your budget?
$500-600 but if there's something that has a lot of bang for it's buck I would consider paying more maybe up to $800.

What is your resolution?
1600x900

What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming (SC2, D3, WoW, HoN)
Potentially some streaming (720p+) and photoshop usage

What is your upgrade cycle?
~3 years

When do you plan on building it?
Very soon. Now if I could get all the parts that I know are reliable and fit the bill.

Do you plan on overclocking?
Nope.

Do you need an Operating System?
Nope.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I could go either way on this one. I'm sure I won't really find a reason to need to get a second GPU in the next 3 years but if the price difference between motherboards that do and don't support SLI/Crossfire isn't much I would just get the one that could so that I won't need to get a new motherboard down the road.

Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg, NCIX, TigerDirect

I've also come up with a list of core parts that I put together but I'm not too sure about them so if you guys wouldn't mind taking a look and suggesting better parts I'd appreciate that:

Power Supply: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276574&sku=ULT-LSP550

GPU: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=698000&sku=E145-0524

HDD: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7281716&sku=TSD-500AAKX

Memory: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7162756&sku=K24-9918

Motherboard: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=693837&sku=M452-6113

CPU: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7073161&sku=I69-2500K

I would probably have to buy a case and the peripheral drives (i.e. CD, ethernet) but I think I may have some lying around.

Thanks for your reply!

I found a review on the video card, though I'm not sure it's the same one, and it seems like quite a number of people are having problems with it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-125-415&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=2#scrollFullInfo.

I'm hoping they're not the same card and if they are what would be a good alternative?

Edit: I stole this from another person's build but what about this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102969
