Good point. I think it then technically takes on the properties of whatever it's upgrading, full or OEM version. Of course if you're not upgrading anything but just using the free student copy of windows 7 as a full version (like everyone does), I suppose you're on shaky legal ground. Kind of.

after overclocking when your pc is unstable does that necessarily mean temperatures are too hot? or can you have an unstable machine even when getting 45 temps?
|
You can have an unstable machine even at 45c.

i had prime95 running for about 12 hours today and when i got home i kept it running but i also did a bunch of other shit while it was testing. i was streaming starcraft2, and watching videos. is prime95 just as accurate if you have a stress test running with a lot of programs running in the background or is it likely to crash because of all the programs + stress test and i should just stress test and nothing else? not sure if what im at is stable bc i did get a bsod. i restarted the pc and since then no crash but i havent been running prime95

prime95 will give priority to other programs. So you can have prime95 running and the worker for the core will sit until the core becomes unused. Therefore its better to do nothing while you run prime95.

So I gave my parents my old computer and I need a new one. I have everything picked out besides the video card.
List: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fdbM
The SSD is just a placeholder as I will probably get one off a deal when I see one online. I also have a 1TB WD Green HDD so storage isn't a big deal.
The monitor has become the biggest factor in choosing the video card. I am going to stick with the old 22" 1680x1050 monitor. I was originally going to choose the GTX660 Ti but I thought that might be a bit overboard for the resolution that I am playing at.
Also, I know that the AMD cards have good value but with my history of their cards I've had nothing but driver problems with them. I want to avoid them unless they have really proven that they have stepped up their game in that department.
So what do you guys suggest?
Other than that any other suggestions would be nice. Thanks.

Capstone 450-M is significantly better than the Silverstone and is less upfront ($5 more if you factor in after mail in rebate): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182261
Just get the GTX 660 Ti? You get a free game that recently launched and you might get a new monitor in the future. Nothing under GTX 660 Ti from Nvidia is appealing.

Since prices in New Zealand are a bit wonky compared to US prices; what would be the best graphics card for 1920x1080 gaming (DotA 2, SCII, D3, Skyrim, Guild Wars 2, Archeage) out of the cards from this site: http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/ Ty ty :D
|
What is your budget? £800 GBP - $1250 USD at current exchange rates
What is your resolution? 1920*1080
What are you using it for? Gaming - Would like it to be able to run Dota 2, CS:GO on high or more settings with a good FPS in multiplayer.
What is your upgrade cycle? 2+ years generally. Will sometimes upgrade gfx card / ram but MB etc 2 years +
When do you plan on building it? As soon as possible
Do you plan on overclocking? No
Do you need an Operating System? Yes, Windows 7 64bit home edition would be fine, not too fussed about windows 8 coming.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Have a Nvidia Gefore gts450 I'd like to use to run a second monitor, not for a second game but more of web browsing or streams playing etc.
Where are you buying your parts from? aria.co.uk overclockers.co.uk dabs.co.uk ebuyer.co.uk microdirect.co.uk
Notes
As mentioned, am looking to run all recent games on High settings or more with very good fps in multiplayer modes. Would like 1 new gfx card in the build and would also like it to fit my old Nvidia Gefore gts450 which is PCI-e to run an old 2nd monitor 1600*900. Guess this effects the PSU etc. Overclocking I'd rather not as it decreases the lifespan of components and with a high upgrade cycle I dont think its worth it. The budget is max, it doesnt have to reach that of course. If there is a rig for less that runs at the settings I require then by all means let me know. Or on the other hand if it doesnt for that budget do let me know how much more I would have to spend to make it work.
Thanks for your help Regards James

I am currently using a computer with a core i7 920 (bloomfield), a 9800 gtx+, and 6gb dd3 ram, and I have been noticing issues when playing games lately, everything takes a long time to load, and I cant move for 4-5 seconds at the start of SC2 1v1s.
My question is whether I should look to upgrade my previous computer, or just go about building a new one, I haven't really been following computers/tech stuff for the last two years, but I know how to build/replace things and have built a few systems in the past.
Thank you

Sounds like a blown motor on the hard drive or something. Nothing in that setup really needs upgrading.
But also a lot of people have been having this problem since 1.5, doesnt seem right to throw money at it though.

Well, I made this last pc in the late spring of 2009, so I figured it was probably getting close to upgrade time anyways, unfortunately my main problem, regardless of hardware issues, is probably that I am using windows vista on it I am planning on waiting for the release of windows 8 to see reviews before deciding on what to do either way.

You don't need a second gfx card to hook up a second monitor. All modern cards support at least 2 monitors. And if you have a CPU/motherboard with integrated graphics, you can hook something up to that as well. Of course, extending the desktop on a single GPU takes up some of its computation power, but unless you run 3D applications on the second monitor, you will not be able to notice (or measure) the difference since displaying a 2D scene takes almost no computation power.

Hello, I'm looking to build a pc and upgrade my old one. I've had my recent one for 4 years and its time for an upgrade!
For my budget, I'm looking at spending around 700-900$. I already have a video card from my old pc which is the nvidia gtx 560 ti 2gb. Other than that, I'll need everything else, including a case, ram etc. I have Windows 7 and I plan to buy a new monitor which isn't in the budget, but you can add it in the recommendation.
I want to run dual monitors with this PC, and my current monitor runs at 1600 resolution.
I plan to build this asap meaning as soon as I get a good recommendation, I'll be ordering the parts, so a quick reply would be great. I may plan to run SLI with 2 graphics cards later on, but not at this time, and I also don't plan to overclock it.
Lastly, I'm using this computer for gaming only. Guild wars 2, league, any new game that comes out etc. I'm buying my parts from tiger direct. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. If you have any more questions just ask.

I know my reply is a bit late but thanks SO much for the computer build you made me it really helps me alot and I'm sure this is what I'll end up buying <3.

Why tiger direct? Can you purchase from NCIX?

A very simple question: I have a Gateway LX6810-01 model computer which I bought in 2009; is it possible to switch out some parts and stream SC2 in low quality at 1280x800 resolution with at least 60 or more FPS, or do I need to build a brand new computer?
|
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could find a build for this pc any cheaper than $550: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103464 I simply do not think it is possible. Also, please include all costs, such as the operating system. For whatever reason I notice everyone neglects to mention windows 7, yet it is $70 more. Is there someplace where everyone getting their OS for free?
Also, would it be possible to add a graphics card to the above pc once purchased? And if so, which graphics card?
Thank you!

Streaming is processor-limited, so you'd need to upgrade the processor. But that would mean upgrading the motherboard and the RAM. So while it's possible to do the computer equivalent of a heart-lung-transplant, it's not very economical and it's bext to go for a completely new system (salvaging hard disk and DVD drive).
