When using this resource, please read FragKrag's opening post. The Tech Support forum regulars have helped create countless of desktop systems without any compensation. The least you can do is provide all of the information required for them to help you properly. |
Spent three hours+ reading this thread @ hardforum.com: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1523895, which is a fantastic resource for the Lian Li v345. I don't know if any of you build professionally and would need common component build dimensions / airflow inspiration, but it's the best thing I've found.
I figured out that my HSF options include: Antec Kuhler 620 (http://i.imgur.com/1m7zB.jpg & http://i.imgur.com/9ytRF.jpg) Corsair h60 & h70 (no installed picture http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181015)
SkyR says temps should be fine with overclocked CPU and single 660ti in a v354, so these HSFs are mostly noise combative.
I know I'm getting a case for outer aesthetics, and maybe at the cost of some functionality (cord management in some of those build pics is -awful-). I COULD save a big chunk of money with a more functional case, and open up better/value-efficient HSF options.

Thanks for the background and splanation on power consumption. I thought some of these power "recommendations" seemed way too high. Sucks that GPU vendors are taking advantage of consumer ignorance to kill our spinning rock a little bit faster.

If you're streaming, particularly SC2, the extra oomph you get from overclocking can be pretty important. You also need more cores. And as a result, you're going to run into budget problems. You might need to decide how important streaming is to you. Here's what I'd get:
i5-3570k (220 euro) If streaming high quality was a really big deal to you, you might consider saving enough for an i7-3770k, but this i5, if overclocked, should do well for you. MSI z77a-g43 (92 euro) This motherboard is pretty cheap & works well, with one exception: it will limit the maximum overclock you can achieve. It sounds like a moderate performance-boosting overclock would be all you'd go for anyway, though. Coolermaster 212 evo (29 euro) When you overclock, you need better than the stock Intel heatsink. Note that the HR-02 Macho performs a bit better & is a bit quieter than the 212 evo and can often be found for about the same price in Europe. So check some other retailers to see if that's an option. Also, these heatsinks are both tall. Most cases should be fine, but if you have a small or thin case,it might be a problem for you. 2x2gb RAM (25 euro)
http://www.mycom.nl/Product/Componenten-Processor/Intel-Core-i53570K,-s1155/1353122 http://www.mycom.nl/Product/Componenten-Moederbord/MSI-Z77AG43,socket-1155/1363217 http://www.mycom.nl/Product/Koeling-Processor-Koeler/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-EVO/1308045 http://www.mycom.nl/Product/Componenten-Geheugen/Corsair-ValueSelect-DDR3,13334GB-KIT/1160095
That total comes to 365 euro, somewhat over budget. But I'd recommend going over budget if you want to stream. If streaming isn't a big deal for you, you can just get an i3-2100 + b75 mobo for going well under-budget.
If you really don't want to overclock, you can drop to an i5-3450 + b75 mobo and stay underbudget, but for streaming SC2 I really recommend overclocking.
|
@MisterFred Thank you, you helped a lot!
-Edit- Ok, so i've decided on the i5-3450 because i've reconsidered and don't really think i will stream that often and i still want a good CPU also for other games. And since that processor is a lot cheaper and i don't think i will need an aftermarket heatsink, i can afford a better motherboard. Could you reccomend me one? Or is the MSI you listed good enough for what i said i needed in my previous post? You can use this " http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/cat/47/moederborden.html " to search for what's available in The Netherlands (filter to the right).
|
Actually, if you're not going to stream often, going down to the i5-3450 is an excellent choice. It should still produce a decent stream, just not at HD (High Definition) resolutions. You can drop the heatsink, the processor costs less, and you can actually go for a cheaper mobo rather than a more expensive one. (Motherboards just let you plug in stuff & run it, they don't actually have any effect on performance other than which components they let you use.)
With the i5-3450, I'd go for this Asrock B75 mATX motherboard: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/316350/asrock-b75m-gl.html#tab:info
or if you want the expansion slots of a full-sized ATX board, this MSI b75 ATX motherboard: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/314204/msi-b75a-g43.html
(56 or 74 euro)
You might also consider 8gb of RAM since that'll put you pretty far under budget.

Im looking to build a PC -- My budget is 1000$, but can go slightly over if need be (REALLY dont want to though, since i have to buy windows, keyboard, monitor, mouse etc, which isnt part of this budget)
But i want to be able to play on 1920x1200 on extreme, preferably in 3s or 4s, if possible...
Do you think the i5 3570, and a nvidia 660ti would suit?
Any recommendations on case, mobo?
Is SSD really worth the extra 100$ to have one?

@MisterFred Thanks a lot, you made my life much easier haha

Is SSD really worth the extra 100$ to have one? For SC2, much more than about a GTX 460 / HD 6850 is getting pretty overkill.
Here's a build for $1000, but honestly I would recommend spending less here so you can get better peripherals (unless that budget is already maybe $400+):
Intel Core i5-3570k Samsung CD / DVD burner - total $236 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1025104
AsRock Z75 Pro3 - $85 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157304
Zalman CNPS10X Performa - $33 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118059
MSI GTX 660 Ti Power Edition - $300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127697
Pareema 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600MHz - $41 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820576011

It also doesn't have integrated graphics, but I think you know that.
Too bad it's not a E3-1230V2, but Ivy Bridge vs. Sandy Bridge is not really much of a difference.

Still interested in a build. Here's my previous post edited with some new info since I've talked to some of the groomsmen on budget.
+ Show Spoiler +On July 25 2012 05:21 OuchyDathurts wrote: Alright, my cousin is getting married and me and his buddies are going to buy him a new computer as a wedding present. His current computer is a COMPLETE SHITBOX!!!! It's like a 6+ year old possibly second hand to begin with HP prebuilt pile of garbage. It was for writing college papers and that's about it.
Currently all he plays is DotA2, on low everything. He can't even run ventrilo in the background because his computer can't handle it. I'm not sure what he would play if he could. Possibly SC2, possibly GW2 for the PvP but he's not an MMO person. Maybe some RPGs?
He's on his own for a mouse/keyboard. He's also on his own for a monitor. I have a case he can use that's still in great shape. Otherwise he needs the works. PSU, Mobo, HDD, Video card, processor, etc. Nvidia cards are my personal preference. Driver issues on ATI + him not being a computer genius probably not the best mix.
Doesn't really need a solid state drive, don't know that he'd get a ton of usage out of it and he can always add one if he wants. I would like to throw in a decent headset (with mic). His older brother lives in China and his little brother is planning on moving to China soon so they use skype to keep in touch so that would be appreciated. Also I'm sure his wife would prefer to not hear us screaming at each other while gaming lol. A webcam would be neat for skype but certainly not necessary.
What is your budget?
~700-800 range. Something he can upgrade in the future if he so desires. Just a good starting point.
What is your resolution?
I'm not sure. He uses an old CRT. I'm guessing 1024x768. If he wants to buy a monitor in the future that's on him. If the computer is still good and comes in under budget I'll look into getting one with left over funds.
What are you using it for?
Gaming & general crap.
What is your upgrade cycle?
With him? Apparently when hell freezes over =P Luckily his family and friends have decided it just froze. He might throw an upgrade in here and there but assume this is going to get run into the ground.
When do you plan on building it?
Sometime before October 6th. That's when the wedding is.
Do you plan on overclocking?
If I did I'd be doing it for him and I'm not going to save his comp from exploding. Mine is OCed and runs great with an h50 water cooler. If we go the OC route something pretty hands off.
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes, his wife might be able to get a student copy of Windows but best to include it in the budget just in case.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Maybe in the future to keep up with games but probably not. If so it'd be years down the road.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I'd prefer Newegg where possible. I also live close to a microcenter so that's an option. I'd prefer to keep it to those 2 sources.
Thanks in advance! =D

Hi guys. I'm looking for a computer that my parents can use mostly for skype, music, video editing stuff, internet. pretty low needs. Also, I'm going to pop on to play games randomly like dota2, random mmorpg's. I suppose I don't need to play those games with that much high video settings but the more the better.
I'm new to building computers so if possible, i'd like parts that are relatively obvious to put together with drivers that are easy to find, etc.
I have all the peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor) so don't need to worry about those.
Essentially, I'm looking for something that will boot fast, run programs at a decent rate, play games decently, somewhat able to multitask.
What is your budget?
~500CAD to 600. I'm hoping since I'm not asking for too much this should be easy.
What is your resolution?
My gaming resolution is full screen on a 1080p screen? (1920x1080)
What are you using it for?
gaming to a certain extent, it should be able to read usb/ sd cards/ from cameras fast. what's going to be running at most is streaming radio from browser with skype with dota2. what it's going to be doing most often is running a simple browser watching chinese dramas and random shows.
What is your upgrade cycle?
The upgrade cycle is pretty much once every 8 months or sooner if i have the money. So if I can get suggestions on any future plans that would be terrific :D.
When do you plan on building it?
I can wait 1-2 months if it's a significant difference. otherwise, sooner is better
Do you plan on overclocking?
Not at all.
Do you need an Operating System?
Nope. Going to use Windows 7.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Since I'm upgrading frequently, I'm going to answer yes. But note that my next cycle is in 8 months.
Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg.ca / ncix.ca / tigerdirect.ca / canadacomputers
One final question.. If i get an i5 now, is it easy to just replace it with an i7 later? Also, assume every upgrade cycle is 500.
Thanks alot

Just to answer you last question, no. After this generation of i5's and i7's the socket type will change. So no matter if you buy an i5 or i7 it will be unable to be upgraded.

SkyR is the ultimate authority on the Canadian market, so if he pipes up, it's probably a really good build. That said, I like to put together builds while watching streams, and IEM is going on . Nerchio fighting!
I skimped on graphics card since DOTA & most MMOs don't have very high requirements - but other games (like shooters), will have to be run on low-med settings. Major note: I did NOT check all the canadian retailers for who has the best prices. And since all the canadian retailers price match with each other, doing so can help save you some money. There are a couple of rebates I didn't include in price.

You can replace the CPU with any Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge processor, including i7s, though whether or not you'll want to is debatable.

Thanks alot Just to answer you last question, no. After this generation of i5's and i7's the socket type will change. So no matter if you buy an i5 or i7 it will be unable to be upgraded.
So basically, if I get this generation of intel i[5,7], then when the next generation comes, I cannot buy the part and replace it. So the way to get around this: when the next upgrade comes, does this mean I have to get another motherboard to fit the newer processor? If yes, does this mean I have to replace the other components? If yes for that, are there components I may want to look for that can fit different future motherboards easily.
Also, when is the next generation coming out?

Thanks alot SkyR is the ultimate authority on the Canadian market, so if he pipes up, it's probably a really good build. CPU: i3-2120 ($132, too hard to fit in an i5, this will do well for you) Mobo: Gigabyte H77 ($100, usually I recommend a cheaper B75 mobo, but there wasn't a full-atx option on ncix.ca) RAM: 2x4gb 1333mhz ($43) GPU: XFX 6770 ($105) Case: Bit Fenix Merc Alpha ($35) Media Reader: Kingston external media reader ($25, usb 3.0 interface. There are plenty of internal usb 3.0 readers nowadays, but for no particular reason I like external. Your preference may vary. Make sure it supports the kind of things you want to read from.) PSU: Antec Neo Eco 450c ($40) HDD: Hitachi 1TB ($90, 2tb would be $120, 3TB would be $150) DVD-burner ($19) Ground Shipping, entire order ($7, special from the processor) http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=59192&vpn=BX80623I32120&manufacture=Intelhttp://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=73951&vpn=GA-H77-DS3H&manufacture=Gigabyte&promoid=1043http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=55544&vpn=996770&manufacture=Mushkin Enhanced&promoid=1043http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=73462&vpn=6770PE51GV2&manufacture=Diamond&promoid=1043http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=63256&vpn=BFC-MRC-100-KKX1-RP&manufacture=BitFenix&promoid=1043http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=63041&vpn=FCR-HS3&manufacture=Kingston&promoid=1043http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=60491&vpn=NEO-ECO450C&manufacture=Antec&promoid=1043http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=64505&vpn=0F13180&manufacture=HGSThttp://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=49597&vpn=DRW-24B1ST Bulk&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1043Total: $596 You can replace the CPU with any Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge processor, including i7s, though whether or not you'll want to is debatable.
Couple questions: Why 8gb ram? what's atx (and is mATX) the same thing? and If i don't get a graphics card at all and instead go for an i7, is there an performance hit in the games? ie what's the trade off here?
thanks for your help

Yes, you would need to replace the motherboard if you want to upgrade to Haswell / Broadwell or Skylake / Skymont. The other components do not need to be replaced.
Memory is cheap, why not 8gb?
mATX is just a smaller ATX (so less ports).
The IGP on the i7 is significantly worse than say a Radeon HD6770. Why are you so hung up on getting a i7? It's a complete waste of money if you are not doing professional work.

Hey guys, I built my first computer a few years ago with a lower budget, and as such I'm stuck with a GT 240 and I'm now looking to upgrade to a more modern GPU. My budget is around 140-160 US, and I'm planning to be using it primarily for Starcraft, Dota2, and hopefully some more graphically intensive modern shooters. My monitor resolution is 1680x1050, but I'd like to be able to upgrade to a more HD res in the future. Any advice is much appreciated and long live the queen(of blades)!

6850, 6870, GTX 560. Take your pick.

If you want to upgrade your processor when the next generation comes out, you will need a new motherboard. It will only work with new motherboards that will be released at that time. You will only need mobo+cpu to upgrade. The next generation is coming out in roughly 6 months? Intel seems to be releasing a new set yearly.
Also, you have a bit of a hang-up on cpu. You're not doing very hard computer stuff, so no need to worry much about it. If you really want a full quad-core, just spend a little more and replace the i3-2120 with an i5-3450 or i5-3570.

Why not 8gb ram? ATX = normal motherboard size. mATX = smaller motherboard size, generally cheaper, but not much room to add anything onto the board but a single video card and maybe one other thing, if you should want to do so in the future.
If you don't get a graphics card at all, you will suffer a major performance hit in games. LoL will run fine, since you can basically run LoL on a paper napkin. SC2 (dunno Dota 2, probably WoW here too) will still run fine if you use lowest graphics settings, but more graphics intensive games, including some MMOs, essentially won't run.
