+1 for Jellybean, used all the time at a college helpdesk.
Thanks again to everyone who talked out 2011 vs. 1155 for a right-now-need purchase. I could have ended up wasting a lot of money on a build that wouldn't fully meet my immediate need vs. future wants. So, here's my build on 1155:

I'm thinking 650-700w will be more than sufficient, without limiting power to USB 3 devices? Do I need better cooling; I'm worried about the setup burning too hot at standard-ish clock speeds (and melting entirely if I overclock).
|
You don't need anywhere close to 700w for such a configuration. USB devices don't pull from 12v, they use the 5v. 500w is more than adequate for the build.
H77 isn't capable of overclocking. You need a Z77 to overclock the 3770k. You're also missing an aftermarket heatsink.
|
You will need a Z77 motherboard to OC, if you aren't don't get a K cpu
Also Samsung Series 830, Crucial M4, Plextor M3 and Intel are much more reliable SSD's at similar/better price
For PSU, in the US, Rosewill Capstone is a really good choice, 450w verison is more then plenty
|
The Vertex 4 should be more reliable than OCZ's previous offerings, marvell controllers with custom firmware by indilinx have been performing quite well with the firmware updates they've rolled out.

Hey guys! I'll be buying a new computer at the end of this month! I'll finally be able to play SC2, quite happy about all of this.
Do you all think this is a good build? Is the GTX 670 worth the price up? Should I change anything up?

Hi Everyone
I was wondering if I could get some help building a computer. I've never done it before, and am a little nervous doing it, hahah.
Here are the answers to the OP questions.
Budget: <$1000CAD with monitor.
Resolution: I'm not really sure. I'm assuming this will depend on which monitor I get. I think I'd prefer to spend my money on computer performance and just get any old flat screen monitor.
Using it for: gaming (SC2, D3, LOL, TF2) / programming (matlab) / watching movies etc.
Upgrade cycle: 3 years
When am I building it: Now
Overclocking: No
OS: Windows 7 and either Linux or OSX (some software I use needs linux)
Second GPU: I don't think I need one. haha, do I?
Buying parts: Online shipped to canada

Could this thread be used if someone was looking to build a laptop not a desktop?

If you mean to pick a laptop, custom or otherwise, sure.
If you mean you're good enough to build a laptop, you don't have the slightest need for this thread, and if you're asking that question, you're not, so it's moot.
No offense, but building a laptop is like a vanity project. It's not something even most crazy enthusiasts do.
This isn't me trying to insult you. Laptop hardware is a pain in the ass.
I might do it for fun some time if I get large amounts of cash to waste on it, if, at the time, I already have an absurd desktop that's only value is looking pretty and running benchmarks.

Great, thanks for your help and advice! I'll wait to see what SkyR has to say too.

Looks good except that the processor isn't that cheap. You probably just want to pick up an Ivybridge, a core i5 3470 or 3550. I guess you can pick up an core i5 3230 for $180 and get $7 ground shipping for the entire order if you are trying to save some money.
For case, you'll just want a Bitfenix Merc Alpha for $35: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=63256&promoid=1034
G.Skill Ripjaws are slightly less expensive and better: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57953&promoid=1034
If all you're going to play are D3, SC2, LoL, and TF2 then maybe consider a less expensive card such as a 6850 or 6870.

What is your budget?
roughly $1700~ including a OS & monitor. 1920x1080
What is your resolution?
1920x1080
What are you using it for?
gaming. hardcore starcraft 2 & streaming @ 720p my up/down is spectacular, also other games, skyrim, darksiders 2 and eventually others.
What is your upgrade cycle?
2-3 years
When do you plan on building it?
within a few weeks
Do you plan on overclocking?
yes. not pushing to the limit but slight overclock maybe 4-4.4 ghz (enough to stream)
Do you need an Operating System?
yeah
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Is crossfire necessary immediately or something you invest in when your single gpu isnt strong enough to get the results you want? i would like to use this down the road sometime.
Where are you buying your parts from?
microcenter/newegg. im in the US, ny specifically
i kept trying to put parts together myself but clearly no idea as i seemed to be pissing skyr off so im just asking for a little help here. also i already have a htc evo heatsink/fan already
i can pick up a 3770k from microcenter for only 280$ so i think thats the cpu im gonna go with unless its really not recommended

Should I get the NCIX service plan for these things?
Thanks!

What is your budget?
Around 1000 Euros.
What is your resolution?
1920x1080
What are you using it for?
High-end gaming (maxed out BF3 or Arma II for example.)
What is your upgrade cycle?
3+ years
When do you plan on building it?
Anout 2 weeks from no
Do you plan on overclocking?
Maybe slightly, but nothing big.
Do you need an Operating System?
Got that covered.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Maybe, maybe not. Don't worry about it.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I'll probably be scouring for the best prices on Tweakers.net (I live in the Netherlands).
The 1000 euros does not include a monitor or any kind of accessories.

No. All the parts have manufacturer warranty.

All of those are severely overpriced.

Do all 1155 mobos (some of which have been available for sandy bridge) have their bios automatically updated to be compatible with ivy bridge cpu's?
