I did not write this article, it is from this guys blog: http://sc2betablog.blogspot.com/
For a while now I haven't been letting myself think the beta is soon just because pessimism makes waiting easier.. but this article cracked me.
I am now officially actively waiting until the end of the month for news about the beta's release.
Article: So we're all eagerly waiting together for that wonderful morning when we boot up and check www.blizzard.com or www.battle.net or www.starcraft2.com and see the top news article "Starcraft 2 beta will begin ". The question is, when will that wonderful day come? This post is a list of a couple key things that blizzard representatives have unveiled that have led me to believe that the Starcraft 2 beta will be announced on March 31st, 2009.
Why that specific date? It happens to be the 11 year anniversary of the release of Starcraft. Blizzard proved that they are aware of these significant historic dates when they announced Diablo III on the anniversary of Diablo II's release at the BWWI '08.
To reinforce this, in a recent article from www.starcraftwire.net we were given a list of Starcraft 2 details that Blizzard rep Xordiah released at a German gaming event. I would link to the article but starcraftwire.net seems to be down at the moment. The article listed a number of facts that no one new much about like Dark Pylons and big SCVs and a week or two later Q&A Batch 49 revealed to use the Mule (Big SCV) and Dark Pylons. This gives us reason to believe that everything Xordiah said was true.
The signifcant detail she released was that Blizzard had set a beta date internally and were just waiting until the right time to unveil it to the public. If this is true then it's extremely encouraging to my theories. Blizzard would not set a date even internally that was really far away. Blizzard never gives us dates more then a week or two in advance, they probably don't set dates internally unless they are fairly certain of them. The further away the day is the less certain they would be since there would be more unforseen variables to account for.
This then comes full circle with my theory. If they set a specific date in advance the date must have some significance. Otherwise they would simply say, "When we feel it's ready then we'll announce the beta." They've chosen a specific date in advance because the date has some significance. Blizzcon is too far away for it to be the date because of what I explained in the previous paragraph. They wouldn't set a specific date that far in the future. The only significant date for Starcraft coming up before then that I can think of is March 31st, the 11th anniversary of Starcraft's release.
Some other clues to a beta announcement coming soon is the recent introduction of the new battle.net account system. This hints at blizzard gearing up for the introduction of battle.net 2.0 which will first be tested in the Starcraft 2 beta.
Additionally at the Blizzard support site there is an icon for Starcraft 2 that currently leads nowhere but it's clear that they are even preparing their websites for the start of the Starcraft 2 beta.
So we'll just have to wait and see, I'm sure Blizzard's site will see a ton of traffic next Tuesday whether or not they make any announcement. Everyone expects something for the anniversary whether it's the beta or the second battle report.

That is basically 100 percent identical to my "theory" behind the beta. When you pull that leaked German info (which turned out to be correct) they specifically said Blizzard had a "target" date for the beta... knowing blizzard who doesn't make target dates too often the anniversary seems to be the perfect fit. And of course you combine the recent activity with Bnet and the other beta page.
To me it's gona come down to the Battle Report 2. If we see it this week, then I am very confident that a Beta will be announced on the anniversary. If we still have NO br2 by the time next week comes around, I am expecting just the BR2 on that day and maybe just a hinting about future beta "soon".
|
Well here is hoping that you are right, and that this article can be taken as fact. But- blizzard doesn't hav ea really good track record wehn it comes to this kind of thing.
|
Sweet, I cracked someone! Anyway, yeah I'm being pretty optimistic in that article but the pieces seem to fit. I'm excited so I have no qualms with getting other people excited. Even if there's no battle report this week I'm gonna be expecting BR2 AND a beta announcement that day. I don't see BR2 coming out after the beta begins because there's gonna be so many leaked videos even that very first day. I know I play to put my very first beta replay up on youtube and on my blog right after I play it for nostalgia's sake.
But yeah, even if BR2 isn't out by next week they could announce the beta start on March 31st, then still release BR2 before the beta actually begins. The nice thing about this theory is that we only have to wait a week to see if it pans out or not .
|
I worry that this is all a set-up for the day after.
|
That would be an insanely elaborate April Fool's Day joke... They would have started laying clues months in advance. And like only a few hardcore nerds like me and Pufftrees would have caught on. I would totally commend Blizzard if it was a joke. Then I would probably become a paranoid schizophrenic thinking that everything I see is a clue left from Blizzard trying to trick me about an up coming beta test...

i do agree with this, but i think it may be more likely for the release date of the new 'dota' game coming out april 14(which is relatively close anyway so maybe a moot point). regardless, they have 2 things to release: battle report 2 beta info/release
knowing blizzard i would say they would try to stretch those 2 as far as they can go and maybe try to release the battle report on the aniversary along with some trivia or some kind of dedication to the length - and then release beta info on the 14th to take attention away from their 'competition'. generally since they only release like 1 game every 2 years or so i would imagine it can be tough trying to compete
even if you look at the converse and assume they release both info and battle report on the 31st i can't realistically see them just leaving that potential competitor without anything to take attention from it. but who knows
|
We'll if they announce the beta on the 31st then they won't start the beta for at least a week or so. If the beta begins a couple days before the release of Demigod (the new DotA game you mentioned) the massive influx of information on the web is sure to take away from Demigod's release. But honestly, I don't really see blizzard being that sneaky about trying to undercut their 'competitors' (I put that in scare quotes because Demigod is a different genre from SC2 and from what I understand is being produced by a relatively small studio).

i wouldn't put it past them, i'm fairly certain that they release wow patches and info for other stuff on release dates of new games (i noticed they released all of the new macro mechanic info on the same date as dow2 which is far from coincidence) but yea, you're right if they do release it and have it up any time before that then it doesn't even matter
|
Blizzard always is knowledgeable of competitors and usually takes the opportunity to steal some of their thunder. I was actually surprised that there wasn't more SC2 stuff right when DOW2 came out.. I was expecting something large (we did get the Macro mechanic).
But as far as MMO's they are cut-throat. Age of Conan and Warhammer both had their release dates tainted by very large wow content patches (like Sunwell Plateau). I honestly didn't realize Demigod was releasing next month so this just gives me more fuel that something big coming soon for us!
|
I'm still waiting to see the results from the february comic contest. If I won that, I'd want the news before the beta was commenced.
|
I'm excited for the announcement, but I probably won't get to play unless they open it to the public. I have tried for a month to get a beta key and either they ask too much for it [over 100 USD] or they have no actual intention in selling, but enjoy people making offers on it.
Woe is me.

Meh why not compare the cost to your other forms of entertainment like going to a movie in theaters or a hockey game..
As far as the hours of entertainment rate/$ I think even the 1500 I paid for a beta key(and trip) is reasonable if you are planning on playing the beta as much as I am.
Seriously a movie 5$/hour for possibly shitty entertainment.. if you assume beta will be out for 4 months(which is a reserved estimation) and you play it 1.5 hours/day(also reserved imo) then you can pay up to $180 and still get 5 times the amount of bang for your buck.. and it's guarenteed to be better than a movie..

Illegal servers FTW. It's not like you can't play the game without a beta key (ATLEAST THAT IS WHAT I HOPE O_O).

hey that is also the date my milk expires.

warforge? ;o
Also.. Another interesting hint.. the Blizzard theme park contest ends MARCH 30th.. give them 2-3 weeks maybe to go thru all the submissions and give out keys for beta?? If thats not it, why is the contest ending in March, while the winner will only be reveiled in august at blizzcon?

"bugs and stuff" like Starfall on Warforge? O shi
Some information about Bnet2d: I spoke to some of the guys and they are not interested (at the moment) at supporting SC2 or D3 because of issues associated with it. Bnetd released the War3 emulator (spawning Warforge, etc) and Blizzard got pissed at them. They said how they want to wait a year or so.
Of course, this doesn't stop others from doing it (WoW emulators...).
|
All you guys that are upset about the not having beta keys can still be excited for the beta because just think of how much information is gonna flood TL.net and just the internet in general. Like I've said before, I plan on uploading my very first game I play of the beta to youtube and posting a link here as well as on my blog. We've all been waiting and drooling for BR2, there's gonna be thousands of battle reports out within a week of the beta beginning. Not to mention any screenshot you could possibly imagine.

As someone whos paying to play warhammer online, id say no, Beta is beta and release is release, altho im in favor of payed betas, since many fans will go out of theyr way and will spend hundreds of dollars for it anyway.

My theory is that the whole Starcraft 2 project is an April Fool's. Think about it; why "make a sequel to" a game that is already perfect ?!

Gonna be interesting how this will actually turn out. New battle.net and likely absence of LAN (speaking of beta here, not the retail) should prove to be a challenge. Still can't help but hope for success so the ones who get short straw on beta hand-outs can play it too.

I actually agree with this theory. At the very least, we can likely expect a second Battle Report for the anniversary. However, we will have to wait and see.

April Fools day is the biggest enemy of this theory, if they announce the beta on the 31st what could they come up with for April Fools?

i'm also countin on illegial servers or the like. hell, if i can even play a computer that would be fine for me! though if such things arose, would it be illegial to post it on teamliquid for others to access?

For about the last 2 weeks, the guys over at Starcraft Legacy (sclegacy.com) have had a simple landing page with various images that have had the title "It's Coming..." They've been a great resource for all information and updates regarding Starcraft 2.
Then, today they updated their page to have two count down timers, counting down until March 30 and April 1. Does anyone have any insight or background information as to what they are doing? Are they speculating on SC2 information, or is it possible that they've got some insight that the rest of us haven't been given? Or maybe it has nothing to do with the Beta at all. Anyhow, I was just curious if anyone out there had more information that what I've been able to glean.

ideas have been floated around from folks who know people in and close to blizzard that the beta in happening within the month (and i heard 'a month' over a week ago, so..). its perfectly plausible that they know something the rest of us dont!
|
This revelation pretty much shoots down "all hope is gone" thinking. I think its safe to say SOMETHING very significant will be announced on March 30th/April 1st, simple as that.
|
I think it would be really funny if blizzard was planning to announce the beta on March 31st, but they run into a little problem/delay and are forced to push it back a day and announce on April 1st... ripping the hearts from fans everywhere.
|
Haha April fool! The whole SC2 was just a joke, all the images were pre-rendered, as well as the movies. We will reduce our sortiment to WoW. Haha gotcha!

They are gonna april fools start the beta, but really its not april fools so the people who thought they were smart ignroing the fake release date get owned. APril fools!

Blizzard usually doesn't use april fools to do terrible things to us. They usually release Tauren Marines and junk like that. Unless I am mistaken... I'm sure they'll do something epic, but probably not to do with "ZOMG BETA RELEASE! ANYONE CAN JOIN... APRIL FOOLS" That's just not like them.

Beta usually starts a week or two after the announcement but sometimes up to a month after. However, since the beta sign up are already taking place in a way with the opt-in function of the new accounts and the sign-ups for blizzcon goers. So the sign-up administration phase might go faster then normal meaning beta starting a week or less after the announcement.

You guys gotta remember the beta won't be starting for AT LEAST a month after sign ups have ended so theres no reason why they couldn't use the date to announce sign ups or that the sign ups are coming "soon."

Also, historically Blizzard betas have usually started about 15 days after the beta announcement.

March 31 is my birthday =)

|
hmmmmmmmm is that beta time confirmed or is it just some random guess
|
|
Ok. So what's the sense of throwing away some keys to the top 20 players of the invitational ladder for wc3 ? This event will take much longer than march 31st or ?

Not all keys are gonna be for the first phase of the beta.

Blizzard continues to give out keys for their beta tests after the betas begin.

Or their new site and the anniversary for SC. No one knows when the beta will be announced for sure.

Woe is me. Dude just pay any amount.
i got mine for 40 dollars. friend of a friend went to the con for only wow and he didnt realize the beta keys for SC were being sold for ALOT so when i said i wanted his for 40 dollars he was like "oh hell yeah sure" and its alllll mine so good deal for me

Hype is building nicely. Hopefully the day begins with a dual announcement of BR2 being available and the Beta Starting in a couple weeks.
Then we can watch BR2 a few hundred times b4 the beta!

TL is a fansite. It is the biggest fansite, if I'm not mistaken?
|
TL is and SC1 progaming news site. It seems like half the community hates SC2 anyway.
|
TL still has far more contacts with Blizzard and has a big reputation as being the biggest foreign SC site, I just don't get why Blizzard would send any countdowns to random websites like starcraft2forum which no-one has ever heard of.

no
there are some vocal trolls but i'd be surprised if the tl community didnt switch (as long as the game is decent).
regardless, do you really think blizz would read these sc2 forums, have their feelings hurt because of some criticism and then send out an ENORMOUS announcement to other, exponentially smaller forums with an exact date? i really doubt it.
|
www.blizzcon.com/beta (The site where you enter beta keys for SC2, from the back of the card) finally has been updated...
I've been checking it every so often, expecting it to redirect to a SC2 themed site when the beta sign-up begins. They finally added a beta signup form, but the site still has a WoW background. The site doesn't say what beta you are entering for, but the WoW background is discouraging. Are they really about to start beta testing for another WoW expansion?
I think this sign-up form is for SC2 beta, and yes the key fits, but I'm not going to risk entering my beta key on that site until everything WoW disappears...
What a nightmare that would be, accidentally using your SC2 beta key for some WoW beta test.
I think these are the only beta keys out there right now, and blizzard confirmed that they are for Starcraft 2. So what's the deal with the registration site? Did they forget to redirect it to their SC2 beta site?

There is no WoW expansion to beta test.

plus.. there is TWO zerg units RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE.. Not to mention, Karune already confirmed it was for SC2 beta keys.

only one zerg and to the right of it a dark archon. GOSH!

Well, that's what I thought.
Sorry I missed whatever Karune said.
No one else thinks SC2 beta registration is just a LITTLE out of place on worldofwarcraft.com? Starcraft 2: Wrath of the Lich King, here we come.
It made sense that their last beta registration was on the WoW: lich king website, because the last beta test was, well, WoW, wrath of the lich king... which is actually appropriate. But now the test is for a completely different game, yet the registration is still on Lich King's website. Maybe they'll move SC2 beta somewhere else later.
I'll just shrug it off as laziness. Ok going to go sign up for a beta test that I assume is SC2, on a WoW lich king website.
Thanks for the response.

Actually it makes a lot of sense, WoW has proven itself to be able to handle tons of people, so Blizzard knows it'll be able to handle the beta signups for SC2 and D3. Also since so many millions of people actively play WoW this would be like free advertisement for SC2 and D3.
|

Because TL is more about SC in general whereas the sites with the countdown all are exclusively about SC2.

Yeah that's one way to look at it.
I'm not sure how good of an advertisement for SC2 this is, considering it doesn't mention what game the test is for anywhere on the site. I don't think it's accessible from anywhere else on worldofwarcraft.com. It's just a redirect from blizzcon.com/beta. You'd have to type blizzcon.com/beta to find it. Pretty hard to find for an advertisement, and again, once you get there it doesn't even tell you what game you're signing up for, but hints with the form theme, background pictures, and host website that it is WoW related.
Now... the keys for SC2 beta being given out on the same card as a polar bear mount, I can see that as advertising. SC2 players are stuck with a WoW mount, and WoW players are stuck with an SC2 beta key.

I read this blog earlier and it made me so happy. I really think it's gonna happen. First round of invites in 5 days!

Sorry, but we can't do that - just as we don't allow other illegal content.
|
On March 30 2009 00:21 FrozenArbiter wrote: Sorry, but we can't do that - just as we don't allow other illegal content. under the pretext that the beta files are not transmitted over sftp or https, a custom server would be reverse engineering and technically not illegal. even IF they would transfer the beta files over a secure line, it would be reverse engineering, but getting the betafiles itself could be illegal.
but as always, i do understand. it's not about the legality, but about not upsetting some persons. what i DO NOT understand is that you do push legal reasons instead of just telling that we are not allowed to talk about this stuff because of forum policy.

I'm not that knowledgable of these things, I thought it would fall under the same category (I checked with an other admin to make sure actually, he basically said it fell into the same category, ie things we don't allow ).
But of course, as you say, even if it is legal it's not a good idea for us to support this as Blizzard wouldn't be very happy.
Sort of like how we didn't allow any links to ebay auctions for beta-keys etc.

Thank you. You've successfully signed up for a future Blizzard beta test. An e-mail has been sent to . . . . . . to confirm your entry. Thank you for signing up!
Finally. Hurray!

Finally. Hurray! Yay, I'm so pumped for April 1st, I'll probably die from excitement if the beta comes out then.

It probably will.
If I know Blizzard, its more likely that they do it on A 1st, so that they can reschedule it in case anything go wrong and no one will care about because its april 1st

If there are private servers for SC2 beta it won't be hard to find them with or without teamliquid allowing people to point you in the right direction.

What karune is saying is bullshit I don't know if you guys remember but a while ago Xordiah gave us some information on ESL
ranslated information Xordiah gave at the ESL Finals (9.-10. January 2009)
- Blizzard has a fixed Date for the Beta, still secret though.
- Multiplayer is nearly complete except a few details.
- There will be more opportunities to get betakeys (i.e. Contests, perhaps story contest or something like that)
- the actual build contains some dark pylons, which have a cooldown that when triggered speeds up the probes harvesting.
- The command center also has a cooldown that enables it to summon a bigger scv which collects resources faster.
- supplydepots can be upgraded to give 2 supply.
- mentioned: that immortals seem to be extremely strong in the actual build.
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=86124
So they have set a beta date for what i know. Either Xordiah or Karune is Lying or they missed it again =D.
|
Obviously Karune means that they arent ready to release a beta date. Blizzard admitted long ago that they have a target date for sc2's release. They will just never tell us until they know they can hit it. Same for beta.
|
A: Blizzard set a date for beta. B: on 1st April some sites claim they know the beta release date and are making a subsciption for it instead of blizzard.
1. What is the connection between A and B? - none 2. How probable it is that B is correct? - 1 in 1000.

They don't have a date to give you?

Right now the same people who were saying: "YES we'll be getting a beta release date!!" are probably thinking: "dammit blizzard, at least give us a dumb battle report ..." I hope we get something besides dumb jokes. Even just a battle report would be quite a letdown. I really don't get why it takes blizzard months and months to just record a game, commentate it and put it online...
