I missed this announcement. I had a personal tragedy (death in the family) going on at the time that upended my world, and obviously, that took priority for a while in my life.
Reading this and watching the video in OP now though, I find myself moved. ESL events were some of my favorite to watch. There were a couple where Carmac even brought on the Canadian internet legend from pre-youtube days, Jeremy "Teh_Pwnerer", who helped cast/hop a couple IEMs, including that one that Grubby almost won. That was one of the most glued-tomy-screen tournaments that I ever watched, and back in the day man, I watched them all.
Apollo too was just such a fun caster to follow over time. I'm glad he said a short goodbye here too.
Oliviera's win was the last big moment in SC2 eSports that I'd followed.
It's sad coming to terms that this community's esports is truly in decline. I feel like most online things don't really affect me the way Starcraft does. Maybe it's because so much of Starcraft actually IS real, and not online. It genuinely sucked when InControl passed away, same with TotalBiscuit. Some of the best moments also were real as well though, like when TotalBiscuit sponsored first Crank and then the rest of former Slayers team, and that's what made the Axiom-Acer GSTL win so emotional (I'm a huge Scarlett fan too so it was doubly awesome).
I was hooked since GSL Open 2, I'll never forget that first time MKP (then calling himself "Boxer" as an homage to OG), split his marines against Kyrix, and that entire series had me completely hooked (honestly everyone talks about the shakuras plateau game, but the finale on Xel Naga Caverns was the most epic, Kyrix's creep spread was GOOD, and MKP had to march his marines through it, splitting to dodge banelings, it was fantastic). The eventual loss to Nestea, was the first time that Starcraft 2 taught me you had to take the bad with the good, and that's a lesson that was taught to me many times (especially as an MKP and Scarlett fan...)
I suppose that's the point I should remind myself thinking of this "news" as well (despite the announcement being about 18 months old). You've gotta take the bad with the good, and the beautiful thing about the fans of starcraft, especially here on TL.net, is there's always some good around to keep the hope alive and it far outweighs the bad.
