First off, improving at Starcraft is freaking hard work, so you should go for anything that just seems fun to you, to make that hard work more enjoyable. Do you like carriers? Copy Stats! DT's? Look up sOs or Has! Blink stalkers? Check out Parting or Zest. Honestly until you hit some absurdly high level that a tiny fraction of us will ever reach, you mostly improve simply by playing a lot and having a good time.
Second, I kind of feel like this idea of "well you must always go for a 5base game like Stats would, otherwise you're not getting better!" is incredibly misunderstood. The majority of people's mechanics are so bad that they will be several workers behind what they should be after a few minutes, making plenty of other errors along the way. You can't ask someone with those mechanics to clearly understand and execute some complex 20-30 minute gameplan. Focusing on simpler, quicker builds like a 2 or 3 base timing sets much clearer, easier to understand goals for how a game should play out and when it should end, which is an extremely important skill to build on.
So yeah, my TLDR answer would be, don't necessarily copy a pro because people tell you to or because he never cheeses. Copy builds that a) you enjoy and b) give you clear and straightforward goals, that you can execute relatively easily.
