T&A just explained that Code S will alternate with super tournaments in 2021.

The 16 players in the Code S RO16 will be:
The top 4 players from the last Super Tournament
The top 4 players form qualifiers.
The top 8 players from Code A.

Smaller prize pool by quite a significant margin. Apparently Afreeca will be providing the prize pool themselves next year?

They have not had audiences for a year, It's not clear when they will be allowed to have them back in the studio. I'm sure that has had an effect.

Smaller prize pool could very well be accounted for in EPT 2021 global events. I doubt they'll be an overall reduction besides the already known removed boost from the 10 year anniversary bonus which is $325,000 decrease.

Code A is back. Nice. Looks like overall more SC2 which is also nice!

im pretty sure the region lock will be removed next year, so that might also have played a role.

ionno where this hearsay keeps coming from

GSL is really richly prized compared to how much KR viewership it gets. I would think it's almost certainly being heavily bankrolled by Blizz. If Afreeca_Chae or anyone else wants to clarify I'd be more than happy to hear tho

Also it's $430,800 in 2021 compared to $480,000 in 2020. That's a drop, but not a 'significant' in my view (esp considering army etc).
AdministratorHey HP can you redo everything youve ever done because i have a small complaint?

So they basically rebranded Code S ro24 to Code A?

And having qualifiers in addition to Code A, does that mean that GSL is giving foreigners a chance to qualify for Code S remotely? If not, why bother having separate qualifiers when they can just make Code A bigger (or double elim)?

I just hope ESL/Dreamhack are working with Afreeca.

I really miss the days of Code A into Code S. There were just so many matches to watch. And yeah maybe some were lesser quality, but it was really nice to always have something to watch when I felt like binging on SC2

Very good news. I feared a significant reduction next year since it really wasn't clear if GSL was part of the ESL deal. Also the prize pool reduction is really just the decrease from top 28 to top 24 of each season getting paid. Which is unfortunate because it lowers the incentive for new blood but with the amount of notable players who went or are going to the army before the next season it will still be easier than ever to get into GSL.

This rebrand of Ro24 of Code S to be Code A is cute and all but effectively changing nothing.
I'm happy that there are still GSL tournaments to support the Korean scene for 2021. Any bit of money will help in case you know competitive scene is going away after 2022.

That is not true. Code A is 16 spots with the top 8 advancing to the RO16 GSL. That makes 8 more spots then RO24 GSL this year. Thats a plus of 8 spots.

I don't understand. In 2021, Code A + Code S will feature 24 players, same as Code S this year, no?

I don't follow your math.

I doubt it. Watching GSL in-person is free.

It's nice to have Code A back. Hopefully we can see some new players thrive.
Skill is relative.

yea I wish they took this opportunity to make Code A a little bit bigger, it wouldn't dilute the "Code S" name, and because they don't broadcast the qualifiers it'd be nice to see players like Bomber, Creator, Curious, Taeja, Coca, Prince, ForGG...

as it is, this is basically just renaming the first round of Code S to Code A, but they made it single elim bo5 instead of groups? that sounds like a bad change, you can really get screwed by bracket luck
