prizing for 2020 was higher because of 10 yr sc2 anniversary, blizz gave extra prizemoney for that so I am not that surprised the prizing went down for 2021

Can someone check and see if I have the pertinent info correct?

a) There will now be 3 Supertournaments.
b) The GSL will have 24 players rather than 28.
c) Instead of the 6x 4-player Ro28 groups, there will be 16 players playing head-to-head in Bo5 to get into the Code S Ro16 groups, so effectively one group stage, not two.
d) This also means that the process of getting to 16 players will probably take 4 days of Code A Bo5s rather than 6 days of groups.
e) As long as qualifiers are at least a little bit before the Code A Bo5s and the Code A Bo5 matchups are drawn a little in advance, we may see players able to prepare specifically for a single opponent.
f) Because top-4 in Supertournament is a qualifying criterion for Code S, the first Korean tournament of 2021 will be a Supertournament.

Anything else of note?

No. GSL is now consisted of Code A and Code S. Better to wait patiently for the official details.

all seems correct

the big mistery at the moment for me is how they'll determine the 16 code A spots. inside the qualifier for the 4 RO16 spots? or with a different system?

I'm happy that there are still GSL tournaments to support the Korean scene for 2021. Any bit of money will help in case you know competitive scene is doing away after 2022.

That is not true. Code A is 16 spots with the top 8 advancing to the RO16 GSL. That makes 8 more spots then RO24 GSL this year. Thats a plus of 8 spots.

I'm not sure if you are just bad at math or you are trolling.

GSL has been 24-players in the first group stage this whole year. So 8 players from Code A advancing to meet 16 players from Code S = 24 players. Exact the same amount of players. How is that different from this year Code S?

that's not what the picture says, the picture says top 8 from Code A meet the top 4 from super tournament and top 4 from qualifiers, that's 16 players, and it even says they play in the Code S round of 16

and GSL had 28 players (Wiki)Global StarCraft II League/2020/Season 3
but now it will only be 24 players total between Code A and Code S, I wish they would make Code A bigger

Yes the total is 28 but I meant the first group stage is 24. The other 4 are invited so they didn't play anything until Ro16.

A bit weird to have bo5 -> the groups we usually have, which I assume are still bo3.

Technically, GSL have been calling the qualifiers "Code A" for quite some time now.

But obviously this 2021 change implies that it's coming back as a broadcasted tournament with more weight.

Awesome, 6 tourneys next year. The smaller prize pool and no groups are a bit of a bummer. Still, many thanks to Afreeca for their continued support. Looking forward to tuning in as always.

They are. Bo5 groups and Bo7 quarterfinals would be great imo.

Also curious if this already tells us something about EPT. Will they do 3x season finals to line up with Code S, plus 3x foreigner only (or regional) tournaments to line up with super tournament? Excited to see the details.

Oh that would be great!!! Could someone suggest this to Afreeca?

I hope this means that we will get 3 GSL Code S, 3 Super Tournaments and 3 Global Season Finals (top Korean vs Top foreigners) like we have had with Dreamhack Masters.

What about Bo3's for group play. But Winners and Losers are Bo5. And Deciders is Bo5, or Bo7 extended series, if they played a Bo3 already.

Broadcasting the qualifiers should be good exposure for the players struggling to break the ceiling into the Code S upper echelons. For those complaining that the scene is growing stale (due to always seeing the same players in Code S), this change might help alleviate those concerns and help generate some hype for future prospects that they otherwise wouldn't have until reaching Code S.

Seems weird to me because they had to scratch RO32 of code S because of the lack of players, and now they're announcing Code A again? Seems like a desperate move to get some new blood competing without having to fear to be drawn against titans like Rogue and Maru etc..

Doubt it'll be worth the investment.
