2020-21 ESL Pro Tour: Open Cups

In this week's ESL Open Cups (Wiki)Stats capped off a great month of online play with another victory in the Korean edition, having reached the finals in all four tournaments in July. In Europe, (Wiki)HeRoMaRinE after a two-week interregnum, took the last gold medal up for grabs in July. In the Americas, the rivalry between (Wiki)PartinG and (Wiki)Solar for dominion over the server continued, with the Protoss gaining the upper hand.

Reaching the finals in all four KR server ESL Open Cups played out this month and winning two of them, Stats can be pretty happy with himself overall. He started into July with a victory over Solar, then had to bow down to (Wiki)Trap and ESL Open Cup-Royal Roader (Wiki)Dark, before he could reclaim the throne in Cup #29 this Monday, taking a very close fought series against (Wiki)RagnaroK in the finals. The competition before that point had already been fierce, with Stats having to eliminate (Wiki)sOs, who has surprisingly become somewhat of a regular face in these weeklies, and fellow GSL quarterfinalist (Wiki)Dream. Having taken his fourth gold medal in the Korean server cups, Stats is slowly but steadily creeping up on the leading duo of Solar and (Wiki)Zest.

July has been another fantastic month for German players in the ESL Open Cups EU, with HeRoMaRinE winning the first and latest edition, and (Wiki)ShoWTimE the ones in between. In edition #29 the Big Gabe notably took down (Wiki)souL, his countrymen (Wiki)Lambo and the American invader (Wiki)Neeb in the final showdown. Neeb had taken down (Wiki)Clem in a 3-2 series to claim the spot in the finals and bring about the first month since February, in which the young Frenchman has not reached an ESL Open Cup finals. We're ending July with HeRoMaRinE having advanced his impressive gold medal count two twelve (one more and we can write those out in actual numbers!) and ShoWTimE having equalized his own count of victories with those of (Wiki)Reynor, sharing the second rank with the Italian.

With Clem and most of the other regular Europeans having abandoned the American ESL Open Cups, the Koreans have taken up the reigns over the region once more. In particular, PartinG and Solar both claim dominion over the American server, with one of them always having been in a finals for the last five weeks now. Of those five occasions, three were direct clashes between the two would-be overlords, with PartinG turning the scores in his favor: he won out in Cup #29, taking his rival down 3-1 after having dropped not a single map ever since the start of Cup #28, which he had won without a map loss. Feel free to check this, but that's probably the longest streak without map losses someone had in these ESL Open Cups. With that victory on Monday, PartinG also took leadership of the AM Cup medal rankings, finally overtaking Clem's six gold medals with his seventh victory. Things are looking up for PartinG, he's the King of America for now. But surely, Solar will be back next week to challenge him again.

ESL Open Cup winners earn $200 in prize money and 10 ESL Pro Tour points. Players who finish second earn 5 ESL Pro Tour points and $100. A top 4 finish guarantees at least $50. Week #27 of ESL Open Cups is set to take place on July 13th.

With the 1st DH done the EPT points are probably less important for a lot of the heavy hitters from EU now, as the maps at the top grew bigger. So I gues most Players actually value a healty sleep schedule over the chance to get 10 points in NA.
On top of that the new starting time has lured the Kr into the NA cup, making the competition quite a bit tougher

It's pretty amazing how consistently the pros beat the new names in these tournaments. It's not like the new players don't have a chance, it's just the pros are that damn good.

Yeah, apologies for missing a few! IRL stuff met a dose of miscommunication there, but we should be back on track now every week.

all this clem hype especialy from casters is disgusting.
there was a time where actualy results was the indicator of beeing the best player
but now i feel results are not important any more just hype is
sure clem has maybe better mechanics and better results in unimportant tournaments without big names but the truth is
in the tournaments with good oponents like eu esl cubs ore dreamhack masters he is far far far behind serral far far behind reynor and far behind heromarine
but actualy results are not important anymoe with casters,, this is a joke clem gets all the invites from all kinds of tournaments from wardi china and so on despite the fact he still doesnt deliver on the tournaments with top competition
having better mechanics isnt everything , better stragey, decision making, map awareness, tilt resistance, nerves, and so many other factores are important. at the end of the day sure he has more potential than some other older players but results are what counts and so far he did not deliver he has not earned the casters hype the fame ore what so ever he is not in the europe elite yet

Let the casters have their hype, though. The guy is young and very promising. Hasn't a foreigner being able to compete with Koreans as a terran pretty much been everyone's dream since Jinro. Speaking of Heromarine, with how often he mentions Clem's TvZ on his stream I'd wager he disagrees with you.

Also, these transcontinental online tournaments really seem to suffer from the lag. Was it TY or inno recently who kept eating banelings barely even moving the marines.

I'm taken by you saying Clem hype is "disgusting".

It's not difficult to understand why Clem is hyped up.

Yes he hasn't performed at the same level especially offline but there aren't any tournaments for him to play offline at the moment.

We don't know how many players decline events either or what happens with most invites. Clem brings viewers and he brings viewers because of his play. This isnt a charity.

Also give the young man a break. Don't blame him for casters shouting his name either. It's not very surprising for a young player to get hot and then cool off a bit.

Also, the nature of hype is about getting excited about what they can achieve, not what they already have achieved. Clem deserves the hype he's getting, that doesn't mean he has lived up to it or will live up to it, but he's a promising player and that's all that matters. If we just purely used results to validate players of any sport/e-sport, that would be a very boring world where only the most established would get their due praise. Part of the appeal of competition is to see up-and-coming talent and having some expectations of what they might achieve in the future.

Clem still "needs" to prove himself more, but that is why he is hyped up, cos as a community we believe he's capable of great things. Serral was considered one of highest skilled foreign players over a year before he got any substantial tournament wins. Imagine being one of those people in that time period saying Serral doesn't deserve the hype because of his lack of tournament results lol.

What’s wrong with a bit of hype? Aside from merely extra Starcraft action isn’t the main draw of the weeklies for watching exciting talent, or veterans returning to top form?

Clem is the youngest player in the foreign top 5. I think hype is well deserved

EDIT: Damn, Reynor is 3 month younger o.O

i want to apologize and make something clear i dont blame clem i like him a lot and from all european players he has the highest chance to get to reynors ore maybe even serrals level
i blame casters who put him on higher level than heromarine special showtime etc,, when results have not prove that
i blame casters (some more some less) only talking about clem no matter who he is playing its always clem does this clem does that as if the opponent is not in the game
i miss neutrality, objectively
the poor guy who is playing against clem maybe working same as hard having same hopes and ambitions and dreams but getting no credit no love ore mentioning in the game and if he wins clem has a of day if he loses clem naturally wins

and about who is the best player ore second best third ,,, and so,, in the end it depends who has the best results
even if a player says that guy has better mechanics than me ore this ore that it comes down to results its that simple
ept point standing he is behind special and heromarine about same points than showtime
(Wiki)ESL Pro Tour/2020/21/Standings
eu cups showtime has better results despite the fact he played less of them and heromarine did much much better
(Wiki)ESL Open Cups EU
and the dreamhack main event which is clearly more imoprtant than the european season final heromarine did better
(Wiki)ESL Pro Tour/2020/21/Masters/Summer
so in those tournaments he plays with tuff competition he did not outperform other players like heromarine
in fact he is clearly behind heromarine his esl cup performances is mind blowing , its not even close
sure there is a high chance clem will do better next year but we should judge a player in a here and now
and if you are unbias neutral you have to admit so far he is not the nr 1 terran ore on a higher level than some other foreigner powerhouses

i wish all players best of luck and i hope i can enjoy unbias casters

To be fair, both of them got knocked out against Reynor, it's just that Heromarine met him earlier. :D

I think they are both at about the same level, Clem is a bit better in TvZ for sure, but i feel like Heromarine on a good day is better than Clem in TvT and TvP. Clem is improving a lot though, his TvZ looked pretty nice against Serral, so it's possible he'll be the uncontested best Terran in EU if the other guys fall behind.

just as an FYI, some players sometimes decline invites

e.g. some players generally dislike cross-server play and decline any invites of such events if they are not major/premier (sometimes event if they are premier) (e.g. for a fact i know that some players would have declined an invite to the Douyu Cup because of cross server play)
