edit: btw don't people think the projectiles from the cannons look a bit small? I know were used to this giant ball ow blue asskicking but still. Yea, I think subconsciously thats why the new protoss just seem 'out of place' compared to the original ones...because there are no big manly death balls. Remember all the units that had them: cannons, dragoons, arbiters.
Anyway, am I the only one that thinks the photon cannons are more powerful than the phase cannons? It appears they have a shield to me, and their attack is probably more powerful as well. This leads me to believe that the phase cannon might be the basic defense structure, and you can upgrade to either photon cannons or movable phase cannons from there.

Maybe the phase cannons are an upgrade that's part of a different path through the protoss tech tree that emphasizes their newfound mobility over the classic protoss heavily powered units? I think it would be interesting to see multiple paths through the new protoss tech tree that each emphasize new aspects of their gameplay. Maybe one path has technologies and prerequisites for the new dark templar style units that are being added, and the other emphasizes continued use of zealots with colossus and immortal support or something. It would make the protoss much more dynamic and interesting, as well as fit with their storyline.

actually it seems that phase cannons are the initial building and photon cannons are the upgrade. think about it: phase cannons have mobility, lack of shield (from what we see), and also a seemingly weak attack. photons on the other hand have shield and have a more powerful attack (tho it seems to lack the detector as shown in art trailer). so...mobility for phase cannons to compensate for lack of shield and attack damage?
it kinda makes sense for protoss. begin with a weak, mobile (and probably cheap) mobile defense, and then later on allow it to upgrade into a powerful static defense. protoss would definitely stay to being expensive...and thus susceptible to rushes and getting overwhelmed by the other races' cheaper units, so it stands to make sense to make their only defense building to be mobile but weak to compensate for expensive and few units.

attack is the same... 4 hits to kill marine, 6 hits to kill firebat/reaper....

That's exactly half as strong as a Photon Cannon in SC.

A lot of that video was scripted. It's possible those lings were spawned there when the attack took place.

yeap:D but it's balance issue... only thing we can argue about is graphics, imho

Yeah or maybe they just haven't implemented unit size vs damage type mechanics fully yet. Who knows, or maybe they take another turn altogether on how to deal with armor/damage reduction. I personally think and a part of my nostagia hopes they hang onto the old system with damage types vs unit size and then implement armor as a kind of double system. It worked really well and I'd like to see some working things stay the same :p.

IMO the marines no longer have stimpack, nor medics and that's why they are toughter, this way they would be usefull against toss, because they won't get owned by storm/reavers(which was the hardest counter in sc:bw), so actually the attack could be the same ...or... Their attack type is explosive, instead of normal(if the damage types are the same), so you have one cannon to counter big units and one cannon to counter small units

Photon Cannons are still in the game as of the most recent Blizzard update, the one that added the Pheonix, so they are not entirely replaced by Phase Cannons yet, as has been suggested. You can see them in the newest screenshot on the official site.
Phase Cannons and Photon Cannons look fairly different. Photon Cannons are raised on a twisting network of metal bars, whereas Phase Cannon 'eyes' float above a little circluar platform. During an attack, the platform pulses energy up to the 'eye', which directs it towards a target.

What I can't imagine that! Especially the stimpack part, I won't mind of the medics being gone tho or rines get stronger. i hope they just give infantry some more options or abilities so they won't suck vs protoss as much as they do now. Unless SC2 changes everything so much that bio is for protoss and metal is for zerg then xD.

I am wasting no money for cannons or whatever phase cannons. I am going straight mothership. LOL

yea I guess 2 cannons wouldnt be that bad, but I dunno still if they would have uses for both? Considering how people play now, I dont imagine cannons having a prominent enough role that it would allow for 2 different types of cannons, which is why I am thinking an upgrade would be most logical if the cannons are different. Also, with the ability to warp units in, I think that would also take away from the usage of cannons, since you can get reinforcements wherever you want, meaning less cannons where you think u might be attacked.

This would be very interesting to see, and would merit the use of different types of cannons, IMO, if you can only get one type of cannon by choosing one style of protoss play over the other. This would greatly diversify protoss play and keep things interesting as well. I dunno if would fit into the storyline though, seeing as how it looks like the only chance they have at surviving is by working together, not separating. Still though, I think this would be very interesting to see, since some can choose not to tech far and instead gain access to all protoss units (as well as both types of cannons). Mothership, I imagine, would be the highest tech unit on either side of the protoss tech tree, no matter which unit 'tech path' you decided to use.

warp-in takes time. plus the units can get attacked and killed while being warped-in and cant retaliate. and if pylon power in the area they're warping in is destroyed...they die too. cannons will still be an important part of toss def and offense IMHO.
two diff toss play styles based on cannons? doubt that'll work well.

Can't the Phase Prism generate it's own little field for a limited time? That's probably why the cannons die once they are out of the range of power, because you could activate the Phase Prism and move a bunch of your cannons to the front line of a battle as a one-time thing. Or do a hidden drop in your opponent's base and start warping in zeals, probes, plus cannons. Siiiiiiiick.
|
yeah it can. but prisms themselves arent that strong. if you bust that prism up all your units that are warping will go poof! unless you have lots of prisms or youre warping in a safe place. cannons as an offensive would be too slow...they move slow + prisms gotta morph everytime. but cannons to defend a choke would be awesome: you just keep warping in units there lol.
