you likely have to combo it with another unit or get an upgr ya and combo it with something that is far down the tech tree.... I think this is one of those things that programmers try to make to create more strategy but it never works...
Maybe they think we can like keep moving our static D back and forth and relocating them to make drops much more risky so you keep having to scout to see if the cannons are still there to make your drop.

I like how they are blurring the line between structures and units.

next thing you see Terran might even have a truck type unit of some sort that replenish energy for other units.
or something that can store mineral for proxy mining. Or a unit that creates other units.
ok I'm running out of dumb ideas.

OR they can have a Terran building that can fly around too
that'd be fucking nuts

movable cannons - nice anti-darkswarm thing :D

Just like they balanced starcraft, they made protoss units expensive as hell.
I believe photon cannons (old cannons) can be upgraded to phase cannons, or maybe photon cannons built in the nereby of phase phrism instead of pylon become phase cannon since phase phrism give that ability to units (to teleport).

I go with the consensus that its probably a building upgrade.

Which is different from the current units-on-the-battlefield-get-upgrade-instantly-when-its-done how?

well creep colonies cant attack

you likely have to combo it with another unit or get an upgr I agree, I expect it to be an upgrade at some building, obviously the forge if that still works the same way. Maybe with an additional tech upgrade, or perhaps with an addon or building upgrade for the forge. Same way as gateways/warpgates. You upgrade the forge into a hyperforge or whatever hehe and then you can upgrade photon cannons to phase cannons there or the upgrade alone is enough to give the cannons an additional ability.
I presume since they both look the same that Photon cannons will just have an additional option then named "phase out" for example that just lights up then as it becomes available for all existing cannons. Seems the logical and smooth way to design it.
I really like this whole new take on protoss energy fields and stuff, with warping units in and rewarpable cannons. Totally fits the toss theme imho + the fact that it makes for amazing and unique design. The lasers dont bother me and continues damage as a new type of attack makes for new and interesting takes on things as well. Im so hyped for this :D.

am i the only one that thinks they look the same, just viewed from different angles?

1) The most logical thing seems that phase will be a global upgrade of photon cannons.
2) I would like to clear some misconceptions here - the phase cannon as stated by Blizz is only moveable within pylon power and DIES if put out of pylon aura. So you can't just move the cannons into your enemy's base, no matter if there is a pylon there or not. The best thing you can do is cannon rush normally (build pylon, then build cannons) then just move your cannons forward as you build more pylons, but that's it. Unless you make a red carpet road of pylon power zone from your base to your enemy's there's no way to move cannons there.

Hmm, never noticed before. I disagree with the 2 different types of cannons, I dont think it would be useful, and I doubt both types of cannons would be used. I would have to agree with the idea that it might be an upgrade, as that seems most logical, if they ARE indeed both different. Chances are that theyre gonna be the same. I think so because if theyre planning on opening up rushing options, why have to waste minerals on movable cannons when you can get something else, like some early game spell?

Hmm, I wouldn't be so quick to balk at differing types of tower defense; someone mentioned it earlier, just look at the Human towers in War3.
I am sure Blizzard will find a proper balance for them, they have been at tower making since War2.

Don't know if anyone pointed this out yet but notice in one of the videos there is a bunch of zerglings swarming into the protoss base (the one where the templar storms) There is burrowed lings and the canons don't detect them.

photon cannon - forge required phase cannon - forge and cyber required or only cyber just a possible example of seperate buildings possibility.

You are not alone in this assumption.
However, I enjoy the idea that cannons can teleport. This game is going to rockstar so hard.

Cheers .
edit: btw don't people think the projectiles from the cannons look a bit small? I know were used to this giant ball ow blue asskicking but still.
