WCS Spring Circuit is approaching: Kiev is ready to welcome StarCraft guests from all over the world - and our groups are ready to be announced as well. A number of players have unfortunately canceled their participation so players list has been changed a bit: if you are going to attend the event and you can’t find yourself in the group stages, please contact us via starcraft@starladder.tv as soon as possible!
WCS Challenger winners have also received their Group Stage 3 opponents: remember that two more players will join each group after Group Stage 2 finishes.
Tournament Format video
The tournament starts already on Friday - best of luck to every WCS Spring participant!

We need French blood.

i'd argue thats less ukraine's "fault".
i also think with the new loser bracket system this event will still be "better" than past WCS' and motivate people who have a tough first group to still show up and give it their best, especially as you then face a more equal opponent and are less likely to go out with 0-4 (or 0-6)

Less than whom's fault ? Blizzard/Tournament organization for choosing a country with visa issues known beforehand ? I'm with you.
But if you're suggesting another country's fault, I'll probably not agree about its identity.

Scarlett is not playing ? You know why ? :/ Who else isn't coming ? This is really sad
|
No NA players what so ever, except those who come through the qualifier. Gogojoey is the only asian player that didn't come through Challenger (the qualifiers). Everyone else is from EU.

She's playing GSL instead, can't do both. She'll be playing in that soon =). This season there's a region lock that forbids a player to do gsl and wcs in the same season but they're scrapping that rule next season. So next time she could do GSL and WCS too if she wants.

As far as we know, that rule applied only to WCS Challenger. Sortof also tried to qualify for GSL S1 and he is competing in Kiev. She could still go to the open bracket, so must be something else.

That rule was changed almost as soon as it was implemented. SpeCial is in Code S and is also competing in WCS Spring/Kiev. The way the rule applies to Scalrett is that she was unable to play in this season of Challenger, and thus unable to compete for paid flight/accommodations. If Scarlett is not competing in the open bracket of this tournament, then it was for whatever other reasons (team/herself unwilling to pay for the trip out of pocket).

Pretty sad to be missing a top 5 foreigner in Scarlett but it should still be a good event. Hope we get Serral vs Neeb and/or Serral vs special at some point.

Wow if Scarlett isn't participating that sucks. It's almost crazy how she hasn't made Blizzcon in the past few years and I think this will hurt her chances.

I am glad to see old school players like Dimaga, BRATOK and KAS. Haven't heard about them in a while.

Scarlett is recovering from an eye surgery as far as I know.
|
Scarlett not participating is a massive disappointment. If it couldn’t be helped it couldn’t be helped but we are talking about a player in the top 4 of WCS Circuit points currently and playing one less event than everyone she is competing against.
On a lesser note it’s also a bummer that puCK and Astrea are not making it either. Kiev is not off to the best of starts.

Do we know why so many players cancelled? This is a very unfortunate start :/

Visa issues for some, maybe traveling cost for some.
Denver is unable to compete because he does not have some vaccine needed and cannot have one because of an allergy.
edit : No visa issues, my bad.

Not even filling all those spots.. gg -.-

I'm guessing money has quite a lot to do with it. I would prefer events in Sweden. Those worked quite well if I recall correctly

The recovery was not as good as expected and she did bad in GSL for that reason.

Where do you get that data from?... She lost 1-2 to Trap, and 1-2 to Keen... that's not strange for a healthy Scarlett, so nope, I don't think that's the reason she went out in GSL. The only strange thing she did was to ask GSL to lower the lights of the studio.
Anyways, excited to see how the new events in Kiev go.

Denver is unable to compete because he does not have some vaccine needed and cannot have one because of an allergy From the tournament organizer's perspective, I would like to clarify that no signups were cancelled due to any kind of visa / border control issues. Every Russian player is in. Every player who applied for visa (we had around 10 players who had to go for this procedure, one can't even compare that to US or Canada for example) is now in Kiev. The reasons of notable players like Scarlett, ArT, Denver, Rail, Rob cancelling their participation are mostly individual and nothing has changed since previous WCS Circuit stops: 5 to 10 players dropped almost every event. The main reason why we don't have the replacements for these players is our Master league signup criteria which was not used during the previous WCS Circuit events - this might be our mistake and we will consider changing this approach for WCS Summer.

Denver is unable to compete because he does not have some vaccine needed and cannot have one because of an allergy.
Furthermore, there are no mandatory vaccinations required to go to Ukraine. So its unlikely that this is the reason for Denver's absence..

no signups were cancelled due to any kind of visa / border control issues Thanks for the clarification Alex007, that is very important information to frame the situation.
One concern I have is the sheer quantity of Starcraft being attempted on Friday. Three Bo3 dual-tournament group stages and five rounds of the Bo3 knockout bracket in just one day. That is more maps than an entire season of GSL in the first six hours. I can see why an unseeded player would be wary of entering such an endurance contest. An all-day event like this is certain to take place in the Americas/Korea night time, so just the jet lag alone would make it a grind for those traveling a long way. IEM, counting its offline qualifier, has similar field size and takes place over 5 days instead of 3.
I'd love to see some Korean players that failed to qualify for GSL/ST fill in the last spots, sort of reverse-Scarlett. Taeja or Bunny maybe, or some sponsored slots for any past legend.
I think, strangely enough, having a smaller offline field would increase the strength of the tournament. Almost better off having Group Stage 1 the previous weekend as an online event, and then it would provide a better incentive for the remaining players to travel, plus a less compressed tourney schedule.

Generally the epidemic in in Western Ukraine, not in Kiev. One has similar risk of catching the disease in Paris as in Kiev.

Bonjour Twitter.
Hello Twitter. I will not be in Kiev this weekend for the WCS.
There is a measles outbreak in Ukraine that started a month ago, and I am not vaccinated against it. The vaccine is made from egg, and I'm allergic, that's why being small I was not vaccinated, and I still am not.
Really disappointed not to participate because I felt great but I can not help it.
Good luck to all participants and especially the prominent french players (immenses baguettes) that will represent us there.
See you later

WTF?
Egg allergy is NOT a contraindication to the measles vaccine. In fact kids with egg allergies are routinely given the vaccine - if anything there are special procedures/precautions that are set in place to make sure everything is smooth.
His doctors are misinforming him. He should really consult a better doctor or else he is playing with fire.

It's a pity too, she's off to a great start with getting second in WCS Winter Americas, but really shooting herself in the foot here.
