A year after returning from the military and giving StarCraft II progaming another shot, MMA announced on Twitter that he will be joining Gen.G/Seoul Dynasty academy team (Overwatch) as a coach. MMA told Inven that "I'm sorry to my fans and so thankful to them at the same time. Their support and love let me be a progamer for so long."

He really did try his hardest to come back it is just such a cut-throat climate. Glad he found a gig that suits him!

Sad to see him go, but best of luck to him!
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Congrats MMA!

Guy has had a hell of a career - culminating with the storybook ending by winning HSC back in 2015. How many pros can retire with a premier tournament win like that?

Even when he came back, he managed to qualify for GSL Code S, and won Nation Wars for South Korea (adding yet another accomplishment to his storied career)

Thanks for all the memories MMA, and here's to many more!

Does he have any experience in FPS game? Taeja did very good in Overwatch though.

I really really wanted MMA to prove that you can come back from the military and reclaim your former glory, but alas, it will have to fall upon a different legend (Bomber, perhaps?)
Good luck in your new path, MMA! We love you!

Yeah, it was really unfortunate that his new team disbanded so quickly after his return.
I don't think that Bomber will be able to come back successfully - he alredy delayed his military service for a very long time. I think Taeja is the next big chance of real comeback.
Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

Congratulations to MMA! I don't really follow OW personally (and probably won't, not my cup of tea), but it is good knowing that ye Old players are becoming coaches for these new-age esports teams in Korea, like we see with iloveoov as the AFs' coach.

Good luck to him!

Well that's a shame. I thought MMA was making decent progress back to his old form last I saw him in code S. Not gonna get MMA vs DRG in 2019 now T_T

I guess he has to make the soundest decision financial and future wise... joining a contender team as coach seems like a good one. Best of luck. We will miss him!

WHY?

You seriously question why?

Guess what? MMA was one of two players who would have made GSL this year if not for the influx of 'extra' foreigners. I noted this fact at the time. People outside of Korea playing in GSL would be alright, except that these same foreigners were also enrolled in Circuit. At the same time, Koreans were not allowed to play in both.

People have to live. Life costs money. Money costs time. When time is blocked out for 1/3 of a year, you need to find a new job.

Best of luck anyway.

Hope he'll come back everyone once and again around SC2 by steaming or couch surfing the HSC ;D

Wasn't MMA in GSL Season 3 ro32?

Anyway, I do agree with you, he sure needs to make a living.

It's pretty common for coaches to move from game to game right now. Remember, a lot of 'pros' are just kids who don't have much experience being professional competitors or even responsible adults in general. The idea is that experienced pros can help them in areas outside of tactics/strategy (although there ARE coaches who help the players in this area) so they can maximize their talent.

After two years in the Korean military, this may not be a bad move. Not only is he good at positioning through Starcraft, he's probably really good at shooting guns now, too. He should make a natural Overwatch coach!

Good luck MMA! Hope we can bring you back to Starcraft some day!

Not exactly. He had an opportunity to continue his eSports career in a sustainable way, and he wisely took it.

I'd much rather see the strategic minds crafted by Starcraft live on within eSports than fall into obscurity. While it doesn't directly benefit Starcraft (sadface), it will be great for eSports in general.

Secondly, being an eSports player isn't exactly a cakewalk. It's grueling, as is two years of S Korean military training (look it up, it's pretty crazy and something that usually isn't talked about). Sometimes a change of pace is good.

Best of luck, MMA!
