I think he might be one of the longest if not the longest running and successful SC2 players still playing at a top level right now. I'm sad that such a foreign legend is now retired, but best of luck to him in the future.

We all pretty much knew this was going to happen, but damn if it's not just as sad. Snute, if you read this thread, you're a fucking legend, and the SC2 scene will not soon forget your skill and consistency.

From the BO69 to winning WCS events, thanks for the memories.

A great player with a pleasant personality. Glad I could meet him at HomeStory Cup last year.

Best of luck with streaming, university and casual SC2 in the future, Snute!
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

Gonna repeat what I said on Twitter, thanks for all the great games and holding the foreign flag high when nobody else stood a chance against korean players! Always a class act, one of the best and nicest players ever, a true role model.

Best of luck to you Snute and I will surely say hi on your stream!
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Snute was always such a class act and role model. He was a fantastic player, contributed intelligently and respectfully to balance and meta discussion, refrained from complaining or putting others down, and constantly worked hard. He probably won't be remembered in the same vein as Stephano, Naniwa, Scarlett, Neeb, or Serral in terms of foreigner peak performance, but nonetheless he is among my favorite players of all time. I wish him the utmost success in all of his future endeavors.

Stay awesome, Snute - we'll miss you!

Thanks for all the great games, it often felt like the only foreigner with any hope of actually taking down multiple koreans was Snute. His work ethic and positive mindset really seemed to do a lot. I also really appreciate that he represented the nordic countries at the top level after Thorzain and Naniwa retired, Bunny, Welmu and Snute especially carried it on.

Not gonna lie, it's pretty frustrating to see first the player spot mismanagement by DreamHack and then these absurd groups of death while half the other groups would have been free wins for someone of Snute's calibre...

In general it kinda sucks to have so many fan favourites out in groups already... Especially when you know some of the players who somehow scraped by a victory against them are going to promptly get 3-0d by Serral or uThermal anyway.

Auch, that's a big loss One of the greatest personality in sc2 world. Always kind and pleasent. He was just a normal guy, what is a rarity. I don't usually care about retirements, but it is third, after Life's and Flash's, which is quite a pain :/

I loved his "onion style" against Hero and Classic and these games in which he was going toe to toe with summer Taeja...
An amazing player with a superb reflexion which allowed him to perform some "abusive play" which made twich chats mad
All in all, a super nice personnality, I will miss you Snute, i still have a faint hope to see a bit of your relaxing stream.

He pushed swarmhosts to new levels and was the first one (koreans included) able to use them against the korean terrans with great success.
The playstyles in lotv with the additional workers, more bases and balance changes is vastly different and considering all his transition was better than some others.

Damn thats a real bummer. One of the few reasons I had to watch SC2 just left.

I only have incontrol casting as the reason to watch now.

Edit - Good luck with uni etc. Still never got that signed liquid shirt

To be honest we who like snute have more of him when he casually streams than him playing competitive. So I like it!

I'd not be surprised if he could still play at a high level even retired, he seems too hard on himself; taking it easier could be good for him.

Feel a bit robbed because he was legitimately still top-tier and could easily have made Blizzcon and done well there if things had gone his way. Still an outstanding career and an outstanding attitude throughout. I have no doubt he will be extremely successful in his next venture. GL and thanks for the games <3

(Playing "They Always Move On" from Snutes SoundCloud)

Thank you, Snute, for your awesome games, your keen analysis, your charismatic presence.

From the clever baneling bombs (while still on GL), to the meticulous swarmhost games, to the relentless hydra busts. Your wise words on stream, and at the homestory cups.

You can be proud!

Didn't realize that you announced your retirement when I shook your hand yesterday! Probably better off that way, so the moment could be a happy one. It's good to not put all your eggs in one basket, but despite that, I hope you stick around in the scene for years to come

I still have kinda ambivalent relationship, I hate him for the swarm host games, while I love him for everything else he done.

Nah, kidding, I liked you and I will miss you(even though I am not following WCS most of the time). Much of luck into whatever you do next

Snute for me your such an inspiration.. Thank you for representing the game i love the most. The eSports world needs more people like you.. Always cheered for you in tournaments even when you were facing my protoss race, and i mostly despise Zergs! (loosing a lot on the ladder)

This is not the end, and even in your casual progamer life, i know we will see more of you

I hope that you will consider joining the caster panel, cause i know you would be great at it!

Peace!

Just registered to show my appreciation for Snute and all he has done for SC2 through the years!
Good luck for the future, hope to be seeing you sometimes on Twitch.

On another note:
How can it be, that there is no official announcement of the retirement of such a great player on the official team liquid pro site?
They post literally about everything there (Bromances? Really?). But if an accomplished player leaves the team ... nothing. Was it really such a surprise?
Sorry for ranting but I find it kind of sad, that it seems that the team games dominate the official blog and when someone as accomplished as Snute leaves there is not even a thank you or something =(

Oh, and just as an idea:
In football/soccer if a great player leaves his team or goes into retirement, the team organizes sometimes a showmatch as a farewell. How about a little online tournament or so with one or two casters. And if someone wants to donate money, it goes to some kind of charity or so.
Or do it without the money and just for the fun of it. "Farewell to Snute" sounds cool to me.

Edit:
Just saw that Taeja will be playing for Crank's SC2 team league ... is it a coincidence? I think not!
Taeja for Snute-Farewell-Tournament incoming ;-)

I'm not Snute's biggest fan, but every year when you hear the name Snute you think of a super solid Zerg who is supposed to go far in tournaments. He wasn't the flashiest player, but maybe his incredible stability was his flashiest characteristic. He will be missed by many! <3 Snute.

Loved Snute playstile especially in HotS era using so many swarm hosts. True legend, unfortunately oveshadowed by other foreigners especially now in the face of Neeb and Serral. Actually I always voted and supported him mostly in the foreign zergs and pro-s in general because of his cool attitude, interviews and character. Wish you good luck out there, Snute!

From 2v2s with Richy in 2010 and Playhem dailies, to the top of the competitive scene at the end of 2012, with the HSC VI championship. And staying at the top of a frequently changing and highly competitive scene through all the years until 2018. What a magnificent achievement! End of an era. Thank you for all the streams and memorable games.

Just sums up how much this game meant to him!
I almost started to cry myself seeing this..

GG dude you were the one guy challenging the koreans in the foreign scenes darkest times, always looked on their level when the rest could not keep up.

I am certain you will be succesful in everything you put your mind to now, the combination of work ethics, skill and charisma will get you far everywhere.

snute deserved more credit for his swarm host style. many european (and later korean) zergs played swarm hosts, but snute played them with a perfection that transcended the fact that the unit was overpowered. his endgame spine/spore/swarm host/viper play was controlled brilliantly in ways other zergs weren't able to show.

Over the years ive witnessed dozens of retirement announcements in various esports and the comeback rate is ~ close above 90% within 6-12 months of announcements. About 10% actually graduate from uni in any kind of decent time and get a job of their field. People are lazy in general and simply dont like traditional 8 hour jobs and vastly under estimate how much most of the jobs suck. Usually pay correlates with stress and responsibiliy too. Snute may have a higher chance of succeeding than most others tho

It feels like yesterday when I would tune in to your late-night streams and we would chill together listening to tunes and watching you grind out games. These were the good old days long before joining Team Liquid was even on anyone's mind.

I miss those days, and look back on them with fond memories.

With his extremely handsome looks, I'm surprised he didn't pursue an acting career. Also one of the best, most dedicated and nice personalities out there. In my opinion, what held him back was just an unfortunate entry timing into the sc2 scene.

Will Snute still play BTSL Season 2 cross-server finals since he's qualified? If he drops out, would Mana take his place as the next highest placement just below the qualification cut off?

Maybe it is a case of Stephano "retiring". Just a gradual petering out of tourneys as university commitments catch up.

Would expect a goodbye post and statement from HIS TEAM rather that an ambiguous twitter post that gets people jumping to conclusions.

I agree, this would be a minimal gesture of decency, especially when it is regarding a player that has been competing for years on the highest level and at the same time always demonstrated the highest level of sportsmanship and professional conduct. I have been waiting for it for some time now...

Not really surprised tho tbh. It's well known that SC2 isn't Liquid's flagship title or mainstream attention. League is undoubtedly the eye of the typhoon for now, tho even with this understanding it does suck that the Liquid boys don't get a proper send off.
They did it for Taeja, but why Snute doesn't get the same amount of respect beats me.

I would guess his actual retirement will come at the end of the year, after HSC 18, if he want to go back to school he need to wait until the start of a new semester anyway (unless he's already back at the uni?), there's maybe some contract thing with TL but I can't see them giving him much problem.

i suppose they will make it a official statement by the end of the season/his contract. Snute is maybe THE liquid foreigner (besides TLO) and one of the top 5 sc2 foreigners of all time. Always consistent, good mannered and a role model in sportsmanship. I cant imagine liquid letting him go without giving him the final applause he deserves.

Snute, this is very good decision. Is better to leave now and enjoy other benefits of life. Enjoy and try new challenges. Good luck in the future and thank you for the past! You were big and you will be big in your new challenges in the future. I hope you are still in some part of SC2 scene, playing time to time and streaming or casting.

Snute posted an update on what's going happen for him going forward:

Hi starcraft friends ^.^ Sorry for the absence and not posting anywhere online for a long while-

Some of you might know already but lately I've grown gradually fatigued from competitive SC2. I tried taking some time off from sc and the Internet in general the last months to see if it would get any better. Going back to playing a lot of SC2 hasn't felt right, physically and mentally, even if was easy before. So I've been on a hiatus doing things outside of SC trying to rest up and figure things out.

Long story short I decided on not aiming for Blizzcon or attending all the events in 2019 like before. At the same time it's not like I'll quit absolutely everything SC. But it probably won't be the same globetrotter journey with Blizzcon as the goal going forward.

Team Liquid has been very supportive regardless of whether I would keep competing or not. The long-term plan is to attend university next autumn (more computer stuff!) while continuing with streaming and gaming. I'll keep you updated on what happens! I've been fortunate to live an amazing pro-gamer life, playing in different places all around the world, with so many fantastic memories to look back on, with tons of support and love. Thanks for making SC2 such a wonderful scene to be part of for so long <3

Despite not competing this time around, I was fortunate to be invited to HomeStory Cup as a guest - I'll be on the couch enjoying my favorite tournament and casting a little ^.^ feel free to tune in to and support one of the absolute best tournaments of the year at https://twitch.tv/taketv - it is live right now and will be every day this weekend!

Once again sorry for being missing for so long and thanks for all the love and support throughout the years, at tournaments, on stream, here online and elsewhere. <3

Snute streaming more sounds great, was always a great stream.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.
