Long time Korean Terran player FanTaSy announced today via Instagram that he'll be returning to competitive StarCraft 2, after having retired at the beginning of 2016.
ah everyone beat me to it. Ah well, at least the news is out! And I'm rather surprised he'd come back to SC2. I always thought he'd be more at home with Brood War, but its always nice to see the opposite happen.
Didn't matter which game he came back to, this makes me very happy. Fantasy was just starting to hit his stride in sc2 when he went off to the military so it'll be interesting to see what he can do in LotV
Oh, cool! Don't know how well he'll do to even qualify for tournaments since Parting and MMA haven't been able to qualify for most tournaments since quite some time now. We need Code A back.
It finally is over~! Thank you to all the fellow members of forces who worked hard with me and lets keep in touch~! I decided that I will be returning as SC2 pro-player now. I may have excited some and disappointed some with my decision, but I chose what I think will be best for my abillities, so please cheer me on~!♡
wow, this is really surprising
never expected in my life that Fantasy would choose SC2 and ForGG would choose BW. That seems so weird per say; since it would have been the best in financial point of view that Fantasy choose BW and ForGG choose SC2
but in end of the day, it really isn't all about the money! Follow the #passion
Fantasy had started to "get it" and was in the midst of finding SC2 success when he went to do his military service. Maybe he felt like he had some unfinished business.

only to crash and burn then return to BW to cash in I'm glad that he's doing what's best for himself. We already have Flash in BW, we don't need another great terran there too though I question if he can survive the new level of skill that BW has reached but that's for another thread.
It's so great to think of FanTaSy coming back! I would have loved to see him in BW, but he did play some of the most interesting SC2 games ever also, IMO. I hope he gets into GSL-qualifying shape quicker than Parting and MMA so far.
Ugh, I want FanTaSy to be happy and I can't dictate to him what makes him happy. I just really don't enjoy following SC2 at all and he's my favourite BW player of all time.
Good luck Jung Myung Hoon, I will support you the best I can, but I can't like SC2 T_T
Good luck. I still hope he will eventually return to bw. He reached heights in this game that only few have. He even nearly beat Draco in a bo5. Would be a pity.
crazy but interesting news. Lets hope for the best and see the development. I'm inclined to think that he'll return to bw later none the less after he sees how sc:r has changed it
I was wondering when Fantasy would complete his military service just yesterday. I'm happy to see he'll be back to showing his infamous GG timings. It's very surprising that he decided to go back to SC2. He was never a top tier terran in SC2, so I just assumed he would go back to BW where he was more successful.

While he was on holidays a month ago, he got to top 50 GM. So there is a good chance that he can qualify for season 3.
It's weird he returns to SC2 and not BW. But anyway, there's where the most money is, and even if he doesn't switches to BW is better to get him on SC2 than do not have him at all :-)
Fantasy is one of the very few pro Terran players i respect because he doesn't just copy every other pro like a sheep. I think he also is one of the only Terrans (other than myself ofc) willing to do full transitional builds from bio to mech or mech to bio and make them work with good execution.
Tbh, this will sound harsh but people know it's true, SC2 started to go downhill when every other player that was retiring or leaving SC2 was a Terran player. Boxer, Nada, Fantasy, the list goes on.

No worries, SC2 will be fine as long as it has the most legendary of all terrans, YOU. Like YOU said.. YOU're basically the NA FanTaSy.
Holy crap that's the best surprise in a very long time. He's gonna have to work damn hard to get back to the top I think, but man am I gonna be cheering him on! FanTaSy hwaiting!!!! <3<3<3

SC2 really isn't where the money is for Korea specifically, he would probably make much more money streaming BW unless he can win a Blizzcon or a big IEM

its a business choice in BW you have Flash collecting all that ASL money (its going to be incredibly hard.. nearly impossible to get at that level once again and than taking on Flash&Rain ) Fantasy wants to collect of what is rest of the blizzard sponsored sc2 money
I think one of my favorite games was played by fantasy back in hots. He was matched vs true and lost nearly all of his economy to a baneling bust but proceeded to wage a gorilla war with just 2 medivacs of with marines vs a 4 base zerg, he lost but it was the closest game I've ever seen when a player is nearly 50 workers behind their opponent. I hope that once he gets back into form he will bring back his signature fantasy style where he micros his units so heavily that he seems to always get maximum value out of them but places such an extreme emphasis on aggression and control that he often floats large amounts of money. No on plays the game quite like fantasy.

no... He would be able to make so much money from afreeca streaming, if he would go for a "business choice" he'd choose BW no qestion.

On Afreeca that's enough to get ~3k+ a month.
How the fuck is that suppose to be a viable buisness model? Or is it only with donation?

I am surprised as well to see him go back to SC2 instead of Broodwar. So many people were hyped about him going back to BW.
Thinking about it, maybe he has already several team offers in SC2. EG? TL? Maybe a Korean team?
BW only has a real scene in Korea and other than ASL there is nothing else. Maybe he thinks he can make more money in SC2 since it's much more popular and there are more tournaments outside of Korea. I am sure he did the math Streaming BW vs competing for a team and winning tournaments in SC2.

Afreeca has a lot of whales that donate a ton of money (balloons). You can look up By.Tyson's numbers, when he was an active streamer he'd get ~75'ish viewers and he'd get about 3k a month, at least that's what i remember reading.
But yea Afreeca streamers mainly rely on donations, lucky for them even the low end pros still get a lot of donation and sponsored/event matches, it's more than enough to justify being a full time BW streamer.
^ For example you can see how much Free was getting back in 2016, he was like a middle of the pack streamer. There's not much separation between midd to low tier pro BW streamers.

EG left SC2, why would they sign up mostly forgotten SC2 player that used to be almost legend in Brood War days?
Honestly I can't see why any SC2 would sign him up. Fantasy has never been top dog in the game and coming out of military service - I don't see him making any kind of splash.

BW has a ton of tournaments outside of ASL. There's atleast 6 tournaments going on at this very moment. As well as a teamleague.

Fantasy never came close to winning anything in sc2, he was way better in BW, he probably just like sc2 more or at least the sc2 competitive scene.

Fantasy made weird decisions during his games in SC2. Reminds me of Flash, who also made weird decisions in his games in SC2.
Jaedong in his prime in SC2 seemed to get it though with Zerg. The one year that Jaedong got to the finals of Blizzcon, and where Jaedong kept getting 2nd place at major tournaments, was the most successful period for any of the "BW Bonjwas."
Having said that, Bisu was the worst "BW Bonjwa" to play SC2. I had no idea what Bisu was trying to accomplish in most of his games.
Anyways, good to see Fantasy come back to SC2 instead of going with BW. I hope he can excel in SC2.

I think Flash's 2014 were he carried KT to their Proleague title and won IEM Toronto was better than Jaedong's 2013. People like to only look at high tournament finishes without considering context but Flash faced in general much tougher competition than Jaedong. Except that Blizzcon ofc where Jaedong bested Dear and Maru.

Flash did well when KT won Proleague that year. I remember Flash beating PartinG in the final. And Flash won that one IEM. Compared to say Bisu and Fantasy, Flash did better than them in SC2. But IMO, Flash failed to reach his potential.
By far, Jaedong was the most successful of the BW Bonjwas. The year that Jaedong reached the final of Blizzcon, I considered him to be the best Zerg player.

His results were inflated due to leaving korea and playing in an easier region. His Blizzcon run was impressive but Flash faced and beat top tier opponents more consistently. Also no way Jaedong was better than Soulkey that year.

Smart to use quotes around BW Bonjwa given neither Jaedong nor Bisu were a bonjwa, but given we talk about Fantasy - even "BW Bonjwa" with quotes is not justified. One OSL does not Bonjwa make thoguh to be fair he was the most consistent among single starleague winners.

As a fan of Fantasy and follower of his play in BW I would like to ask the same question.
Fantasy might not be remembered as a dominant BW champ but with guys like Flash and Jaedong still around why wouldn't Fantasy be able to keep up if he did return to BW and worked hard?
He would have too high of a mountain to climb if he went back to BW. Would be rough to keep up with Flash and co so he might as well stick to playing SCII then. Better chance to win something there :D

Noone keeps up with flash, fantasy would have a way easier time to become a top player in bw (again), something he never even was in sc2 really. Compared to the time he played sc2 last there are less players to compete against so that helps. I see him as a regular ro16 player who sometimes might make a ro8. Not really more than that though, in bw he would arguably do better.

Ah yes, SC2 is so easy and BW so hard that the chance of winning something in SC2 is much easier. That's why all the BW players instantly dominated sc2 after the Kespa switch.

Look at MMA and Parting they haven't even qualified for a GSL yet after returning, going to be a long hard road to start winning if ever even for FanTaSy.

You can spit freely on sc2 but when you poke BW ...
Yet it's not hard to understand that he just prefers sc2.
I think it might be a case of "unfinished business" for FanTaSy moreso than which one he prefers, as in FanTaSy feels he still has something to prove in SC2.

Please don't start some silly SCII vs BW fight in a welcome back thread. Fantasy was playing SCII before he left for the military and it's the game that he's played since he switched over, aka for years and years now. If he had to go back to BW, he'll have to relearn everything and work hard on trying to get better macro because his 2011/12 form would not cut it anymore. Flash made the Ro8 on his first BW appearance since the switch and got destroyed in TvT, a matchup that he had a crazy win streak in during the KeSPA era.
Add on top of that the fact that the only offline tournament that he can participate in is ASL (we have lots of smaller but good online tourneys but he likely wants offline) and it's obvious that with Blizz's support, there's a much larger bag of cash for him to try his hands at.
And when Fantasy comes back to SC2, he won't have to work on anything. He will get a golden ticket to GSL ro16, just like MMA and PartinG who are stuck in Code B! Completely unlike the extremely cut throat BW scene, where FlaSh got 3-0d in ro8!

The way you phrased your initial comment made it seem like you were the one starting the BW vs SC2 fight. Now that you elaborated more I see where you're coming from but still disagree. Fantasy played SC2 before the military but he never was a top player and as you can see with PartinG and MMA, even for top players it's incredibly difficult to get back to top level. On the other side Flash, Jaedong and Rain got high placements within months of returning to BW. I just think SC2 is the more competitive scene atm with BW being focused more on streaming and the players focusing a lot on being entertaining whereas the sc2 scene is 100% focused on competition.
Also the fact that Fantasy has more natural talent for BW as he had much more success in it.
wtf are people saying here... lol. Yes, Starcraft 2 is easier to play, and that's why it's HARDER to win. The game is more volatile and every pro plays near the skill ceiling. I prefer BW but I like both the games. Fantasy is choosing SC2 because has more tournaments and more money, not because he thinks is easier to win (never forget jangbi and fantasy were at the top when SC2 arrived).
FanTaSy is already playing decently. He did alright in today's GSL qualifier. He made it to the final stage of his bracket, 2-0'd Kelazhur, and only lost to Hurricane (who qualified) and Keen (who lost to Hurricane in the final match of the bracket). I wonder if he'll try to qualify again tomorrow... Perhaps we could see FanTaSy being one of the higher tier terran players again soonish?
He didn't do bad in the GSL qualifiers. Beating a current foreign Terran (they say foreign Terrans are weak) is already good. Forcing 2-1 despite his loss isn't bad either. He might make it in the next GSL qualifiers, next year I believe.
Also, he's already invited to the Homestory Cup which will happen a few weeks from now. Good luck Fantasy.
Man, how many more SC2 players are returning other than Fantasy, Parting, MMA, and even TaeJa?

I really wish I can see that now but he will have to try next year. And Parting and MMA had clinched their GSL qualifiers and will head to Ro32 this coming season.
