Well with this design patch coming... I think the qualifiers will be played on the live game and the event will be held post-patch?

Ukraine and Russia get two spots each, all of Scandinavia gets one spot, lmao.

Other than that it's really cool to see WESG continuing with sc2.

Edit: Oh at least Sweden counts as a seperate country, so it's between Snute and Serral.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Yup. Exactly same as last year.

KR qualifiers are gonna be a bloodbath
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

WIN, LOSS AND ABNORMAL SITUATIONS

5.1. Player is declared as a winner after his/her opponent types “gg” or has all of his/her buildings destroyed;

this one is interesting

also problematic if a player starts the game by wishing their opponent a good game

We know that's rough for Snute, Serral and especially other players in the region, but a lot of factors have to be considered when splitting countries into regions and giving the spots.
Unfortunately we had only three participants in Norwegian SC2 qualifier last year as well as only five Finnish players in Northern European one. Similarly, numbers were around the lowest in other titles.

I always thought these "gg" at the beginning of a game were to imitate Korean poor English skills, everyone knows what gg means, why type it in the beginning

I can understand that amateurs won't sign up in a qualifier with only 1 spot, if Snute is playing in it. Everybody knows Snute will get the spot, only if there was a second spot would it make sense for weaker players to try.

But now there is 1 spot for Snute and Serral combined which means even out of those two only one player will make it. If you want more signups for that region, you would now have to offer at least 3 spots. One for Serral, one for Snute and one for the amateurs to fight for.

On the other hand, of course there will be more signups in Ukraine and Russia, since apart from Bly there are no real favourites for those spots and amateur players have a real shot and qualifying.

So I don't think the number of signups of last year is a fair way to distribute spots, instead you could look at the number of players with WCS points per country or region.

Just some feedback for next year maybe .
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

maybe the reason behind this is lower level players do not want to go through the hassle of registration when they know that their chances versus snute/serral respectively are basically none.

On the other hand, of course there will be more signups in Ukraine and Russia, since apart from Bly there are no real favourites for those spots and amateur players have a real shot and qualifying.

Do you really think that lack of amateur players in Scandinavian region is explained by the fact that Snute and whoever else in Finland was a clear favorite last year while there were no clear favorites in Ukraine or Russia? Sorry, I'm not really sure about that reasoning. It's OK if you're unfamiliar with Ukrainian/Russian scene but every experienced amateur player from these countires is pretty much aware of the best 3-4 players who are really able to advance.
So I don't think the number of signups of last year is a fair way to distribute spots, instead you could look at the number of players with WCS points per country or region.

The number of signups wasn't the only factor, just the one which could be described briefly.
WCS and WESG are not connected in any ways.

We know that the registration process is not very simple, but we cannot do anything with that. Sending the scan of the passport is still required due to the nature of the tournament. I'm sorry about that.

I know that WCS and WESG are not connected, I was just trying to say that stronger regions should get more spots than weaker regions.

As a good way to determine stronger regions I suggested WCS points, but you can also use Aligulac or something else.

w00t, the Scandinavian region has only 1 spot while Russia and Ukraine have 2 spots each.

It means that Snute and Serral will be competing for a single spot, while 2 Russian guys who are worse then Snute and Serral (and many other EU players in the scene) will be there!

If things go as they did last year, only two Koreans will qualify while 10-20 Koreans who would have been the 3rd best player in the tournament don't get to go. This is an overarching problem when trying to divide qualifiers this way.

...no info yet about Middle East & Africa qualifier (even if Turkey is now included in one of the European local qualifiers) but I think the real matter here is if Stephano will be able to stay awake during the breaks in the Finals...

considering denmark https://en.wesg.com/en/sc2/tournaments/700/members has 0 sign ups so far, can we consider merging denmark with finland/norway?

It doesn't seem like there are a lot of details and I'm not familiar with this tournament. So for me as an American, there's an online qualifier for USA in December, then a regional tournament for NA/SA taking place somewhere in NA/SA in February, and then an international tournament somewhere in China in March?

Yeah, Finland and Norway both have better players than Denmark right now, I don't get why they're merged and we have our own qualifier.

Because Denmark has great CS:GO/Dota2/HS players. It is not only a SC2 tournament.

I understand that there are various reasons why the qualifier is the way it is. But at the very least after the first round of qualifiers have taken place you could invite a few of the top players from the ladder to the main qualifier. I don't see any details for how the bracket works, but if there's 20 players right now you could just add the 4 top players from the ladder who didn't qualify through the regional qualifiers. So there would be 24 players total. If there's no extra money then they can pay their own way there. I'm sure the community would be willing to chip in to get some of their favorite players to this huge event.

I know it's frustrating getting so many comments about this but it really feels super unfair to the players and from a spectator's point of view it sort of poisons the event. A lot more people will watch this event if the community's favorite players are able to participate.

The DSCL is not running the WESG Benelux qualifier, although Benelux players could qualify for the qualifier through the DSCL Open qualifiers. Glad I cleared that up

Blammo Entertainment / Firstlook Festival is running the qualifier, and it will be played TODAY at Firstlook Festival in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Check out the bracket here, more info is here. Come visit the event and meet your favorite Dutch memelords!

EU and AM online qualifiers (except the three mentioned as they have their own LAN events) and LAN finals are held by StarLadder
Russian qualifiers were held by UCC

They actually have some prize pool ($200) for SC2 qualifier winners as well as for winners in other titles so this is basically the battle for money, not for seeding. Also, LAN will be held in Moscow.

Today Serral vs Snute in the WESG qualifiers. Might be the strongest match-up in the first phase of this whole tournament. Shame only one will go to EU finals, from where top12 goes to WESG finals and both surely would be top12 in Europe. :/

Yeah it's quite a shame that there's not too many overall participants for this, but then the top-2 are top-5 outside of Korea. Some tweaks to get both there would've been neat.

All qualifiers are streamed on wesg_sc2 channel and it's always listed on TL in the "live events" bar.

I could've easily seen 3 spots for Baltics + Nordics, but I guess this system is trying to balance the spots around the size of the scene in the different regions. Finland's SC2 scene is all but dead nowadays, don't know if Norway is doing any better.

If you choose one nationality for competition - there is no sport that would allow you to choose another in the same set of qualifiers. So, I don't know the specific rules of this competition, but they seem to follow strict rules of other sports and it seems impossible that he would be allowed to participate in other qualifiers.

Totally agree with you. He has his playstyle (maybe too agressive but that's fun to watch), he is very young, his family support him 100%, so maybe 2018 will be his year, School may hold him back tho...

Was just wondering since the website (https://en.wesg.com/en/sc2/tournaments/720/rules) states old maps. Not sure if they just didn't know map pool was changing.

...groups and schedule for the European Main Qualifier were announced today...

...the European Qualifier will run from November 23 to November 26 in Barcelona, Spain, for a prize pool of $40,000 ($18k for first place, $9k for second place) and 12 spots for the Global Finals which will be played in March 2018.

...following last year's standard, the tournament format will be 4 groups of 5 players each, played in Round-Robin format (Nov 23, Groups A and B - Nov 24, Groups C and D with 2 official streams to cover all the matches), with players coming in first places advancing directly to the Ro8 while players finishing up in second and third places battling it out for the four remaining Ro8 spots; on Nov 25, Ro12 and Ro8 will be played while on the final day only Semifinals and Finals (including 3rd place match) will take place.

This was announced over a month ago...but anyhow, it also makes a lot of sense. This way, the people playing in both WESG and IEM don't have massive jetlag from flying from Leipzig to America and then from America to Pyeongchang.
