Given that there's an extension for the test patch patch out, I wanted to try it on some of the best / iconic maps from the olden days. Sadly, my memory fails me, so the only ones I remember the names of were
I'll also post the map picture to help people remember
Just kidding, Overgrowth is my favourite map of all time. I think it's just perfect. At the beginning of SC2 I also liked Steppes of War (probably just because I had some cool games with friends on that map)
Cloud Kingdom LE (best map of all time?) + Show Spoiler + Daybreak + Show Spoiler +
These two maps killed my interest in watching SC2 for the longest time.
They were in the map pool far too long and imo they're nnot interesting maps at all.
While I agree they were in the pool far too long, they always produced very interesting games and I think were universally loved. If I recall, the problem was a combination of quality maps not coming out at the time, and the community not willing to change when a few new and or interesting maps did come out (this was mid HotS right?)
Also just because a map was good, doesn't mean that it's good in LotV.
Thanks and true, but since many maps were never played in LotV we'll never really know Though I can imagine Cloud Kingdom and lurkers would be... interesting to say the least.
What? CK? DB? They were fun 4 years ago, but playing them now just shows how bad their design is. Same for Ohana, for an exeption of, may be, Belshir. Overgrowth is ok i guess. But i really liked it back in the days.
Coda King Sejong Frozen Temple These are a examples of how well designed and balanced a map should be. Dusk Towers could be if its redesigned to remove that narrow path in the middle to avoid stalemaes.
Trash like Galactic process, Dasan Station, Dash terminal, Ulrena should be banned from battle.net forever.
King Sejong is the best overall. Incredibly unique design and produced complex games, fights all over the map, and a non straight path to the mains reflected the better parts of Desert Oasis.
Overgrowth was the go to map for balance during its era.
I don't get the love for Cloud Kingdom. Yeah it started the whole paths phenomena, but that just made army engagements very linear. Armies typically got caught off guard or the excitement was just seeing if one army could beat the other to expansions.
Seriously King Sejong is my favorite one But I do have some nostalgia for the first maps (Metalopolis, Scrap Station, ... ) they were probably terrible, I probably just associate them with the first games I ever played
Those are probably my favorite "standard" maps, but then I also have soft spots for maps like Bel'Shir Beach, Dual Sight, Metropolis and Habitation Station.
Pretty much agree with OP's list, the one game with battlecruisers was in the Mvp vs Squirtle final. For its time, Shakuras Plateau is definitely up there too...maybe Terminus, Crevasse and/or Tal'darim Altar could be added too since they were a big change in how the game is played, but unfortunately they were all fairly broken.
One of my favorites maps that has not been mentioned is Yeonsu. It was active during the "protoss blink vs terran" era and because blink was so strong back then and in particular on that map it never got the appreciation it deserved

Because some of the best TvZs of all time were played on that map.
We had the greatest map of all in the map pool for four seasons until some children with attention span shaped by snapchat decided for the hunderth time that if a game goes over five minutes, they can't keep ... hey look at all these cool vegetables in my instagram feed!
does anyone remember when metalopolis had close spawns??? lmfao i loved that map... shakuras plateau had some GREAT zvts... antiga shipyard!! and maybe im a weirdo but i really liked blistering sands too:
Plus i saw best ever TvT of Top vs Byun on scrap station Shakuras Plateau gave me DeMuslims greatest moment beating NesTea with mech on that map and Steppes of War is the greatest map ever

Close spawn metalopolis was a nightmare as a zerg player. The 2-rax push was so hard to hold off. But blistering sands... I actually am still fond of that map because it was the first one I played on in sc2

I'm amused by the relationship between maps that had the best all-around balance, and the ones that produced the most memorable and entertaining games. How many maps were like Dual Sight, which often produced really fun games for spectators, but was horribly imba nonetheless?
