Map: Void Thrashing

Description: Char is ablaze. Increased vulcanic activity has made the planet even more hazardous than before. Keep your eyes on the enemy, and always remember: don't stay on fire.

Mutations:

Scorched Earth:enemy units set the terrain on fire upon death

Lava Burst: lava periodically bursts from the ground at random locations and deals damage to player air and ground units

Evasive Maneuvers: Enemy units teleport a short distance away upon taking damage.

Notes:

- scorched earth damages only ground units

- lava burst gives an hint of the sprout before going up, and damages both ground and air with massive power

- Thrashers seem to spawn a bit faster than usual (may be wrong, just played a couple of games)

Evasive maneuvers is not a great deal, but probably makes melee units not a good idea.

Scorched earth makes ground units, especially melee ones, very bad.

So I tried my first game as Artanis, going for Tempests, but they are too slow and bulky, and avoiding the bursts is hard. They die to them in a couple of seconds. Ally was Karax, going mono immortals. We were unable to build a growing army, taking too many casualties.

Second game I went Abathur, mono muta with double upgrades: quick to avoid lava bursts, powerful, and regenerating after each battle; just don't get them all in one spot under a lava burst!! Ally was a weak Kerrigan, going ling/ultra. I did most of the job.

Abathur muta build approved. Efficient. Must suggest.

I have yet to fail this one, 6/6 so far.

Playing Artanis I was even able to carry a non unit building Karax (usually I approve, but it sucks on this map imo) and a lvl 9 Raynor.

Whirlwind Chargelot + Phoenix is what I use.

It's annoying that they changed the schedule, because I got up early this morning before leaving, so I can try it a couple of times as I normally do, but it wasn't up yet. So I'll have to wait a while before I get home and try it. But here's what I want to try:

- Swann. All his units are ranged, especially after the armory upgrade. And carrying everything in hercs will make it easy to manoeuvre around the lava bursts. Although I imagine the initial perdition turrets for defense will likely get annihilated, since they're short range.

- Abathur. His godlike mutas are probably even more godlike on this mutation. I'm not surprised at all by Malhavoc's assessment.

- Raynor. It's really easy to get a fast macro explosion with him on the void thrasher mission. You'll just have to work a lot harder microing the marines. As usual, for me, I'd supplement with either tanks if the enemy is heavy ground, or vikings if the enemy is heavy air.

I can't imagine the other commanders would be all that great. Maybe Zagara if you focus a lot on morphing all your lings to banes, but that would make you exhausted in gas, and your remaining lings would be awful. Vorazun's greatest strength is her melee fighters, not so great here. Kerrigan doesn't seem very good because your mineral dump is either queens (which you then have to work really hard spreading the creep quickly, which is hard on this map even without mutation) or lings, which I'm guessing are garbage here. Maybe you can make her work if you work really hard on the creep spread, and do a queen/BL type composition. Artanis and and Karax both have melee mineral dumps, and their air is slow. In both cases you have to get carried until you get a good air army, which is why I never get an air army for them even in the normal version of this map. Though I imagine Karax's orbital strikes are incredibly useful.

did it on 1st try with lvl 63 swann. hercs full of goliaths & science vessels
ally was an equally strong artanis with dragoons & immortals

almost as trivial as a normal brutal mission

Kerrigan is absolutely fine on this mutation as basically nothing prevents you from solo-carrying the mission till the 3rd wave of thrashers with ulting on 2nd one. Just build nothing but drones until you can spam ultras and that mineral bank doesn't really matter.
Seems too easy for literally every hero except Zagarra and prob Karax unfortunately. Even Raynor is fine as long as your micro is on point.

2/2 on Swann and Abathur. Like other said, this is an easy one. Though I imagine I'll struggle more with Raynor.

Be careful fast expanding with Swann, You should build the blaster turrets inside the mineral lines, rather than outside the rocks. I didn't do that, and I instantly lost a blaster turret & a couple SCVs as soon as they started it (didn't even cancel).

The last two have been pretty easy. Karax on White Out is trivial. I wonder if we'll get anything close to the fourth mutation. And, of course, they saved my favourite mission (temple) for last.

This mission is pretty easy. 2/2. Kerrigan brood lords are surprisingly decent for a change, and Abathur mutas are OP like always

Laughably easy. I thought the last 2 mutations were pretty good in difficulty but I never noticed the mutations for this mission at all.

I tried it at least once with every commander except Abathur (don't have yet)

Raynor: I had a hard time with him. Maybe because of the vipers' blinding clouds. It might be a good idea to mass air along with some fodder rines. I went marauder firebat for some meat.
Kerrigan: Pretty much kills everything by herself until the end, where she needs a bit of help. Broodlords with speed are good, but only if you can maneuver them around the fires. Ultralisks are better for people who don't like to/can't control their units. Just use kerrigan until the 3rd set of thrashers. By that time, you should have some other units.
Artanis: He might just be the best one for this one thanks to his guardian shell passive. Zealot phoenix with some archons works well, but not if the enemy is terran mech. BCs take forever to kill.
Swann: He's okay if you can use hercules well. Lots of science vessels helps keep your units healthy. Gol/tank/thor, walk around and shoot.
Vorazun: Her usual self. DT/sair is quite good. I add a few zlots because I have spare minerals.
Karax: He's not good here. Cannon pushing isn't so great because the fires quickly kill units that don't move. It costs a lot of money to get an army going. He might be better with some more points in making units cheaper.

Most important thing is to not stand still because if a fire appears beneath you, you're gonna lose a few units. Just hang around the minerals/main base until the next thrashers appear.

Edit:
Zagara: Scourge bombing works wonders. You could do this in a regular mission, too. 4-5 hatcheries pumping scourge, baneling nest and zagara for defense. Send in tons of scourge at a time. Void thrashers have 1000 shields 3000 hp. Having an artanis ally helps. I'll try it without him later.

Just won it again with a lvl 8 Kerrigan providing base defence while Vorazun did mass DT. Vorazun seems king

Played five games on brutal using kerrigan(lvl15) and won them all with pure ultralisk. One time with an Abathur lost all units around 10mins and unable to come back and one time with a Karax that left the game after realizing static defense outside base won't work. I would say if he stayed we might have lost...

The teleport thing is kind of glitched with kerrigan's immobilization wave. If you leap kerrigan in middle of enemy base and cast it, most enemy units will somehow drawn close together near kerrigan and be stunned. using omega worm to pop out ultralisks at the same time and they will just kill all ground units in 10 seconds and then kill thrashers ignoring enemy air. However it is best to have your ally make some AA to be safe.

Man I got crushed with my level 30 Karax. Allies weren't that great, but neither was I.

I even sullied myself and went down to hard and still lost!! I've beat all the others on brutal so I might need to rethink my strategy for this one.

I do think the lava bursts are really cool and the dynamic of the blinking units make it crazy frustrating. Melee units don't seem to cut it.

Suicide units (Such as Banelings and Scourge) do not benefit from guardian shell iirc

Of course they don't survive when they explode on their target, but do you mean the guardian shell does not activate even when they are just shot down before reaching their intended destination? With scourge, you just need them to reach the target alive, nothing more, after all..

The shield overcharge ability helps a ton.... have ally activate it, fly 100+ scourge into 3 thrashers

I have only done it with Swann, Raynor, and Abathur. I haven't bothered trying the rest. Though I'd be surprised if any commander can do better than Abathur with mutas on this one. I carried a few low levels with it, and soloed with it once (the ally left at the loading screen), and I get the bonus every time with him. (Though I do acknowledge that soloing with your ally leaving is easier than carrying a low level ally, because then you get to have 4 bases worth of gas.)

Of the three I tried I rate Abathur > Swann > Raynor. Though I'll try more when I get home. I think Kerrigan should be really good on this one, with the same tactic as on White Out (use Kerrigan for most things; pop your army out of a nydus worm when you need them). I don't see any of the protoss being very good on this one, though a lot of people are saying Artanis is good. (How does he deal with heavy air comps?)

I have only successfully completed it with Vorazun, Artanis, Kerrigan, and Zagara.

Zagara > Vorazun > Artanis > Kerrigan

I would like to argue that Zagara is better than all of them because she can kill all 10 void thrashers by herself without having to go through the bases. I have done that a few times while my ally acted as fodder and hung out at home defending the bases. Vorazun time stop, Artanis shield overcharge, and Karax +10 hp shield all help. The ally just has to stay home. Ally can help on 3rd and 4th sets, but not absolutely necessary.

My initial assessment is as follows:

  • Raynor: His endless supply of Bio can help you ignore the lava pits as long as you are a bit careful.
  • Zagara: All her units suicide anyways, so she can ignore the lava pits for the most part as well.
  • Vorazun: Cosair/DT! Add in Zealots as a mineral dump.
  • Abathur: Mutas are really good on this map as they can dodge lava pits easily.
  • Kerrigan: Kerrigan solos most of the mission and then Nydus/Ultra/Queen/Hydra
  • Artanis: Guardian shield is good. Both Tempest/Zealot and Phoenix/Zealot are ok here.
  • Karax: Better than Artanis if it were not for his Guardian Shield ability.
  • Swann: Tanks are close to useless since they die instantly when dropped. Hercs aren't even that good since everything you drop can die immediately. Best I've done is mass Thor/Vessel.

Swan is a powerful ally for whoever can go mass air. The key are science vessels. I saw a Swan + Artanis video doing it on Brutal, and I'm not sure if there were any Tempest casualties!

Btw, I'm not very confident about Artanis' Zealots, I managed it on Hard, Tempest/Zealot way. The Zealots died frequently, but they did divert enemies from Tempests at least. If going Phoenix/Zealot, I have no idea if I'd be able to beat it. Maybe the Phoenix's speed is the secret of success with that composition?

I won 1st try with Swann but I thought it was pretty hard; harder than the last couple mutations anyways. Didn't get the bonus and our fortress had less than 300hp left. I should have put points in immortality protocol price reduction I think. At the end I had only around eight Thors (3/3) left and a dozen Sc Vessels keeping them alive with shields and repair. My ally lost all of his army at the 3rd set so I had to clear the 3rd and 4th set mostly by myself.

I could only beat it on Hard with Tempests while warping some Zealots here and there..

Edit
Phew, managed to beat Brutal using Tempests and Zealots weee :D
